Your winning bid is not necessarily the amount you will pay for a LEGO auction lot. The final bill can also include a buyer’s premium or another charge stated in the auction terms, shipping and handling, and applicable sales tax, VAT, or import charges. Check the specific auction conditions and the checkout total before bidding: there is no universal LEGO auction fee schedule established here.

This is a checklist, not a universal tax formula. The taxable amount and the way tax is collected depend on the destination and transaction. The auction’s terms, checkout preview, and final invoice are the best places to confirm the charges for a particular lot.

Start with the winning bid, but don’t stop there
The winning bid—also called the hammer price in many auction contexts—is the amount accepted at the end of bidding. It is useful for comparing bids, but it does not by itself tell you what will be due. A live-auction purchase can have additional charges, and tax may be calculated on a basis that is not limited to the bid.
For example, Whatnot’s buyer tax guidance says applicable VAT is added to the winning auction price and remitted to the relevant tax authority. That is a platform-specific example, not a rule for every LEGO auction or destination. [c007]
Before bidding, identify what the listing calls the accepted price and what it treats as separate charges. If the listing is unclear about whether shipping, tax, or another amount is included, do not assume it is folded into the bid. Look for a checkout estimate or ask the auction operator to clarify the buyer’s total before you commit.
Check whether the auction charges a buyer’s premium
A buyer’s premium is an additional charge to the buyer on top of the hammer price when the auction terms say one applies. Other possible buyer-side line items may be described as service, handling, or transaction charges. Read the terms for the particular auction rather than relying on a general assumption about LEGO lots or auction sites.

No universal LEGO auction buyer’s premium is established by the available platform guidance. The amount, if any, must be confirmed in the specific auction’s terms and checkout. [c009] A platform may have no buyer premium for one transaction while a particular auction operator states one for another; the listing and applicable terms control.
Do not mistake a seller fee for a buyer’s premium. The eBay guidance describes final value fees assessed to sellers, and Whatnot’s guidance describes commissions and payment-processing fees as seller costs. Those are not amounts to add to a buyer’s bill unless the auction explicitly charges the buyer separately. [c001] [c002] [c008]
Get the shipping and handling amount for your address
Shipping is often the hardest extra charge to estimate from a headline bid. A LEGO lot may be bulky, contain multiple boxes, or need careful packing; an international delivery can add further complexity. Use the actual quote for your destination and chosen delivery option when it is available. A low bid is not necessarily the lower-cost choice if its shipping charge is higher.

LEGO’s US shop provides a limited example of why it is important to inspect transaction-specific terms: special shipping and handling charges apply to Pick a Brick and Bricks & Pieces orders. That official-shop example is not an auction rate and should not be used to estimate an auction’s shipping. [c004]
Understand how tax can affect the total
Tax depends on the transaction and destination. A checkout estimate can help, but the estimate may not be the final amount. LEGO’s US shop terms say its checkout page shows an estimated sales tax and that the exact sales tax is calculated when the order is submitted. They also say shipping and handling may be included in the taxable merchandise total where state law requires. These are US LEGO Shop terms, not a universal rule for auction purchases. [c003]
BrickLink’s US guidance explains that marketplace-facilitator rules require sales-tax collection in relevant US jurisdictions. It says that in most states in its guidance, tax applies to the full order amount, including shipping and other fees, while acknowledging that treatment varies. In other words, a tax calculation may depend on more than the item price, but you should not presume the same taxable base applies in every state or marketplace. [c005]
For an international purchase, distinguish tax collected at checkout from potential charges collected when the package arrives. BrickLink says it collects VAT at checkout for orders at or below €150 delivered into the EU from outside the EU, with VAT shown at checkout; it also notes that other additional charges may be due on arrival. Whatnot separately says import VAT and customs duties may be payable on arrival for certain shipments above €150. Those are platform- and circumstance-specific examples, not a complete statement of EU law. Check the destination-country rules and the transaction’s checkout or invoice rather than treating either example as a universal threshold or outcome. [c006] [c007]

Estimate the total before you bid
- Write down the bid amount. Record the current expected winning bid or your intended maximum. Treat it as the starting price, not a complete budget.
- Read the auction terms. Search for a buyer’s premium, service charge, handling fee, or other explicitly stated buyer-side charge. Note whether the terms explain how it is calculated.
- Enter your delivery destination or request a quote. Use the shipping and handling amount for your address and delivery choice. If the amount is unavailable or unclear, ask the auction operator before bidding.
- Review tax and import information. Look at the platform’s checkout estimate and identify whether tax is collected at checkout or whether the transaction could involve charges on arrival. For cross-border shipping, consult the relevant destination-country guidance.
- Check the final checkout or invoice. Confirm the item price and each listed add-on before submitting payment. An estimate is useful for budgeting, but the actual order total is the amount shown for the transaction.
If the auction does not provide enough information to estimate a buyer charge, shipping quote, or tax treatment, do not silently treat the missing amount as zero. Ask for clarification or decide whether you are comfortable bidding without a complete estimate.
Compare auctions by their all-in totals
When comparing two listings for the same LEGO item, compare the amounts you expect to pay, not just the headline bids. Use the same cost categories for each option and make sure you are comparing listings with comparable condition and completeness when those details are provided.

A lower headline bid can cost more overall if its shipping or stated buyer charges are higher. Conversely, a higher bid may have fewer add-ons. The comparison is only meaningful when both totals use the same destination and the same assumptions about tax and delivery. If one listing leaves a material charge unresolved, treat its total as uncertain rather than presenting a precise comparison.

Marketplace fee pages can be confusing because they often explain what sellers owe. eBay’s guidance covers final value fees assessed to sellers and describes a calculation base that can include item price, shipping collected, and sales tax. That information helps a seller understand proceeds; it is not an extra buyer surcharge to add on top of a LEGO auction bid. [c001] [c002]

Whatnot likewise describes commissions and payment-processing fees as costs charged to sellers. Its separate buyer guidance discusses tax collection for purchases. Keep the two sides of the transaction separate: add a fee to your estimate only when the auction terms or checkout identify it as a charge to you as the buyer. [c007] [c008]
Why might checkout be higher than the bid?
The difference is usually explained by one or more transaction-specific charges rather than by a universal LEGO auction fee. Review the checkout line by line to see whether the increase is shipping, a stated buyer premium, tax, or another disclosed amount. A tax estimate can also differ from the exact amount calculated when an order is submitted, as the US LEGO Shop terms illustrate. [c003]
- Shipping is larger than expected: Confirm that the quote is for your destination and delivery option, and that it covers the lot as listed.
- A buyer charge appears: Match the line item against the auction’s terms. If the terms do not explain it, ask the auction operator rather than assuming it is a seller fee.
- Tax includes shipping or other fees: Taxable amounts vary by jurisdiction. BrickLink’s US guidance says most states in its guidance tax the full order amount, including shipping and other fees, but also notes variation. [c005]
- Import costs are not included at checkout: Some cross-border transactions may have charges due when the package arrives. Check the applicable platform information and destination-country rules before bidding. [c006] [c007]
If the checkout amount still does not reconcile with the terms or quote, pause before submitting payment and request an itemized explanation. The seller’s fee schedule alone cannot establish what you owe as a buyer.
