Legitimate YouTube sponsorships are arranged either through a platform-enabled campaign or through contact between a creator and a brand or agency. YouTube’s current creator-brand partnership product is YouTube Creator Partnerships, formerly BrandConnect, but sponsorships do not have to go through it. In every route, the parties still need to agree on the actual work, fee, timing, content use, and review process—and creators must make any required paid-promotion and legal disclosures.
How YouTube sponsorship deals work
A sponsorship is a business agreement: a brand funds some or all of a creator’s content in return for a promotional relationship. The agreement might be initiated by a brand or agency contacting a creator, a creator responding to a campaign brief, or a platform tool helping the parties discover and contact one another. The route can organize discovery or submissions, but it does not itself settle the deal’s terms.

That distinction matters. A platform listing, campaign brief, or outreach message is not a universal price list or contract. Neither YouTube’s platform materials nor the regulator guidance discussed here establishes a standard sponsorship fee, payment schedule, contract form, or performance guarantee. Those details have to be negotiated for the particular campaign.
There are also different kinds of paid relationships. YouTube defines sponsorships as content financed wholly or partly by a third party. It distinguishes them from paid product placements, where a third party’s brand, message, or product is integrated into the content, and endorsements, which viewers are likely to understand as reflecting the creator’s opinions. A campaign can involve more than one of these concepts; the label a party uses in an email does not settle disclosure obligations.

Three ways brands and creators can connect
| Route | How contact begins | What the documented process does | What still needs agreement |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Creator Partnerships | Advertisers can find and contact creators through YouTube’s partnership tools; creators can share channel information to support discovery. | YouTube’s March 23, 2026 announcement describes creator discovery, outreach, management of brand-deal links, and measurement across organic and paid content. The product is integrated into YouTube Studio for creators and Google Ads and Display & Video 360 for advertisers. | The parties still need to settle the campaign scope, compensation, timing, approval process, permitted use, exclusivity, cancellation, and reporting that apply to their deal. |
| Open Call | An advertiser publishes a campaign brief; interested creators can respond with video content. | Google described a workflow in June 2025 in which the advertiser reviews and approves creator submissions and can promote approved videos as partnership ads and measure results. Google said access was then limited to select advertisers. | The brief and review workflow do not establish a universal fee, contract, approval right, payment trigger, or result. |
| Direct or agency outreach | A brand, agency, representative, or creator contacts the other party outside a platform campaign flow. | This is a possible way for parties to connect, but the official platform materials described here do not set out a universal direct-outreach process or require this route. | Confirm who is contacting you, what business they represent, and the specific campaign terms before providing sensitive information or committing to work. |
YouTube Creator Partnerships
YouTube announced on March 23, 2026 that its creator-brand partnership product is called YouTube Creator Partnerships, replacing the former BrandConnect name. The announcement describes a set of tools, not a rule that every legitimate sponsor must use them. A creator may encounter platform-assisted discovery, outreach, deal-link management, or measurement there, while an advertiser works through Google Ads or Display & Video 360.
YouTube says creators can choose to share more channel information with brands to support discovery. That is a choice described as part of the product, not a basis for claiming that every creator must share the same information or that sharing guarantees an offer. Availability and features can change, so use current YouTube Studio information to see what appears for your channel. Do not assume a particular subscriber threshold or eligibility rule from the product name alone.

Open Call campaigns
Open Call is a brief-and-submission route rather than a general promise that any creator can apply to any brand campaign. In Google’s June 2025 description, an advertiser uses the creator partnerships hub to publish a creative brief to multiple YouTube Partner Program creators. Interested creators submit video content; the advertiser reviews and approves submissions, and can then promote selected creator videos as partnership ads and measure results.

That qualification is important: the existence of a documented workflow does not establish that every advertiser or creator can use it now. Check current availability rather than treating a past announcement as a guarantee of access.

Direct and agency contact
Not every legitimate deal needs to originate in YouTube’s tools. A creator may receive a message from a brand or agency, or may contact a potential sponsor. The official platform descriptions establish platform-based routes, not the prevalence of off-platform deals or a required procedure for them. Treat an unsolicited offer as a lead to verify, not as proof that the sender represents the brand.
Before sharing account credentials, payment details, private analytics, or other sensitive information, independently verify the sender’s business identity and the campaign. Be cautious with unexpected attachments or requests to sign in through a link. A real sponsor does not need your YouTube password to discuss a campaign. If a message claims to be associated with a platform tool, check the tool through your usual account rather than relying on the message’s link.

What to settle before accepting a deal
No universal contract or list of mandatory clauses is established by the platform and regulator materials covered here. The following are practical points to clarify in writing because each can change what the creator is agreeing to deliver or what the sponsor can do with the work. Their terms are negotiable; none should be mistaken for a fixed industry standard.
- Deliverables: Specify the content involved, such as an integrated segment, a dedicated video, or other agreed materials. State what the creator is expected to make and deliver, rather than relying on a broad phrase such as “a YouTube sponsorship.”
- Timing: Set the relevant dates: when materials are due, when the sponsor must respond, and when publication is expected. Clarify how schedule changes will be handled.
- Compensation and payment trigger: Record the agreed fee or other compensation and when payment is due—for example, which milestone or event triggers it. There is no universal amount or payment timing established here, so do not infer one from another creator’s deal or a platform workflow.
- Review and revisions: Establish whether the sponsor reviews a script, draft, or finished content; how much time it has to respond; and what happens if it requests changes. Clarify whether approval is required before publication and how disagreements will be resolved.
- Content use: Specify whether the sponsor may repost, edit, distribute, or otherwise use the creator’s content, and for what period and purpose. In particular, distinguish organic use from paid promotion or use as an ad. Do not assume that paying for a sponsorship automatically grants every possible use.
- Exclusivity: If the sponsor expects the creator not to work with competitors, define the category, duration, and any other limits. Do not leave “exclusive” undefined.
- Cancellation: Agree on what happens if either party cancels, a campaign is delayed, or the creator has already completed some work. The sources do not establish a standard cancellation payment or remedy.
- Reporting: If the brand expects performance information, define what will be shared, when, and in what form. YouTube’s platform materials describe measurement tools, but do not promise a particular outcome or make every metric part of every deal.
A concise written record is useful even if the parties do not use a long-form contract. It can be a signed agreement or another clear written confirmation, provided it captures what both parties actually accepted. For complex rights, exclusivity, or cancellation terms, consider qualified legal advice in the relevant jurisdiction; this checklist is not legal advice.

How to handle an offer from first contact to publication
- Verify the contact. Check that the person and organization are genuine, and confirm that the named brand is involved in the campaign. Use contact information obtained independently when practical. Do not send passwords or use an unexpected login page to “confirm” an offer.
- Ask for the brief. Get the product or service, intended audience, campaign objective, requested content, expected timing, and any proposed paid amplification in writing. For an Open Call, read the actual brief and submission requirements rather than assuming all campaigns follow the same terms.
- Assess fit and truthfulness. Decide whether you can make the requested content honestly and whether you have actually tried any product you would be asked to endorse. In US-facing endorsements, FTC guidance says not to claim experience with a product you have not tried or make claims the advertiser cannot substantiate.
- Negotiate the scope and economics. Confirm deliverables, fee, payment trigger, deadlines, review and revisions, usage rights, exclusivity, cancellation, and reporting. If a platform manages outreach or deal links, use it as a workflow aid; do not treat it as a substitute for agreeing these specifics.
- Keep the agreement and campaign record. Save the accepted terms, brief, approval messages, final content, and disclosure plan. This record helps both sides understand what was agreed if timing, edits, payment, or use of the video later becomes disputed.
- Make the platform disclosure selection. When the video includes paid promotion, tell YouTube by selecting the paid-promotion declaration in YouTube Studio. YouTube says a viewer-facing message then appears at the start of the video. This platform step is separate from deciding what additional disclosure the law requires.
- Disclose clearly to viewers and publish as agreed. For a US-facing endorsement, FTC guidance calls for a clear disclosure with the endorsement and says a video disclosure belongs in the video itself, not only in its description. Review the agreed campaign terms and make any other disclosure required where you operate or where the content reaches viewers.
Paid-promotion labels and legal disclosures are separate
YouTube’s paid-promotion declaration informs the platform that a video contains paid promotion; YouTube says it then displays a viewer-facing message at the start. YouTube also says creators and brands remain responsible for additional legal disclosures required in the places where they operate or where their content reaches viewers. Selecting the platform declaration therefore does not, by itself, establish that every applicable disclosure obligation has been met.
For US-facing endorsements, the Federal Trade Commission’s November 2019 guide says a material connection can include payment, free or discounted products, or other things of value, as well as some personal, family, or employment relationships. The FTC says creators are responsible for making disclosures and should not assume their audience already knows about a relationship. Put the disclosure where viewers can see or hear it with the endorsement; in a video, do not rely only on the description.
Simple wording such as “ad” or “sponsored” is preferable to vague shorthand. The disclosure should be understandable in context, rather than buried among unrelated information. A creator should also be truthful about personal experience and product claims: the FTC guide cautions against describing experience with a product the endorser has not tried or making claims that lack the advertiser’s substantiation.

Quick Recap
Common misunderstandings that can derail a deal
- “Every legitimate deal must use YouTube Creator Partnerships.” No. The platform offers a discovery and campaign-management route; the materials described here do not make it mandatory.
- “A campaign tool sets the rate or guarantees payment.” The documented features do not establish a universal sponsorship fee or payment schedule. Agree those terms with the other party.
- “Open Call is open to everyone.” Google said in June 2025 that Open Call was then available only to select advertisers. Current access should be checked rather than assumed.
- “The platform’s paid-promotion message covers every legal disclosure.” YouTube says creators and brands remain responsible for any additional disclosures required by applicable law.
- “A description disclosure is enough for a video endorsement.” FTC guidance for US-facing endorsements says the disclosure should be in the video, not just the description.
- “The sponsor owns all uses of a sponsored video.” Do not infer a rights grant from the fact of payment. Put permitted uses and any paid-ad rights into the negotiated terms.
