How League of Legends Works: Roles, Lanes, Objectives, and Win Conditions

In Summoner’s Rift, League of Legends’ popular 5v5 mode, your team wins by destroying the opposing team’s Nexus. Lanes, champion kills, gold, and jungle objectives all matter because they help you get stronger, break through defenses, and reach that target—not because any of them is the win condition on its own.

How do you win in League of Legends?

Destroy the enemy Nexus first to win the game, as Riot Games puts it in its beginner guide. The Nexus sits inside the opposing base. Turrets and inhibitors defend the routes to it, so a team generally has to advance through a lane and clear defenses before it can attack the Nexus.

That gives the match a simple strategic loop: earn experience and gold to strengthen your champion, use lanes and objectives to build an advantage, then turn that advantage into pressure on enemy structures. Defeating champions can help, but kills are a means to that end, not a separate way to win.

What are lanes, and how is the map laid out?

Summoner’s Rift has three lanes—top, middle (mid), and bottom (bot)—with jungle areas between them. Each lane leads toward the enemy base. Riot’s map-design retrospective describes this basic layout, including the two bases and the Baron and dragon pits; its 2019 overview of the map is a historical source, while Riot’s beginner guide explains how lanes and structures fit into play.

Riot’s beginner guide describes each lane as having three turrets and one inhibitor, with two turrets guarding each Nexus. Turrets attack enemy minions and champions and provide limited vision for their team. Minions are small allied units that advance along lanes; having them move ahead of you helps when attacking a turret, because the structure targets minions before champions.

An inhibitor is a major defensive structure farther along a lane, beyond its turrets. Clearing a lane’s defenses opens a route toward the Nexus. You do not need to clear every lane to make progress: Riot’s guide says a team needs to clear at least one lane to reach the enemy Nexus.

What are the five positions?

The five recommended positions in Riot’s beginner guide are top, jungle, mid, bot, and support. A position describes where a player generally operates and what they contribute to the team; it is not the same as a champion class such as mage, tank, or marksman. The common setup puts one player in each solo lane, one in the jungle, and two in bot lane.

Position Usual location Beginner-level responsibility
Top Top lane A solo lane. Riot characterizes top laners as tough fighters who protect their lane and focus on powerful opponents.
Jungle Jungle areas between lanes Moves through the spaces between lanes, fights neutral monsters, and connects lane pressure with map objectives.
Mid Middle lane A solo lane. Riot describes mid laners as high-burst champions who may play independently or with the team.
Bot Bottom lane One of two positions commonly assigned to the shared lower lane.
Support Usually paired in bot lane A distinct team position commonly paired with the bot-lane partner in the standard setup.

These are starting points, not unbreakable rules. Champion choices and team assignments can vary, and the guide gives more detail about some positions than others.

What do Baron and Drakes do?

Neutral monsters live in the jungle. Riot’s beginner guide identifies Baron Nashor and Drakes as the two most important monsters and says defeating them grants unique benefits to the team. Those rewards can help a team win fights or push lanes, but they do not replace the need to destroy the Nexus.

Baron Nashor

Baron is described by Riot as the most powerful jungle monster. Defeating Baron grants the team bonus attack damage and ability power, an empowered recall, and greatly strengthens nearby minions. That combination can help a team move a wave toward enemy structures and convert the objective into lane pressure.

How do champions get stronger?

Champions gain experience to level up and earn gold to buy items. Levels improve a champion’s capabilities, while items add power through equipment bought during the match. Riot’s beginner guide treats keeping up with both as important to becoming strong enough to overpower opponents and help destroy their base.

This is why farming minions, taking fights, and pursuing objectives all connect to the larger goal: they can help your team build an advantage. Gold, levels, and kills are valuable, but none is the final victory condition.

Putting the match together

  1. Develop your champion: earn experience and gold so you can level up and buy items.
  2. Work your position: help your lane or team assignment while watching how play is developing elsewhere on the map.
  3. Use openings: pressure turrets when your minions are ahead, and consider neutral objectives when your team can take them safely.
  4. Advance through defenses: break structures along a lane to open a route into the opposing base.
  5. Finish the objective: reach and destroy the enemy Nexus.

Exact timings, rewards, and the best tactical priorities are patch-sensitive. The durable beginner lesson is to treat objectives and combat as ways to create a path to the Nexus, rather than as substitutes for it. Riot presents League of Legends as a free-to-play game on its official homepage.
