Law firms can monitor client websites by agreeing which pages are in scope, choosing what kinds of changes matter, setting a review schedule, filtering routine page noise, and routing alerts to a named reviewer. An alert is a prompt to check the page—not proof that a change is legally significant or unauthorized.
1. Agree what may be monitored
Start with the client and document the pages and access methods the firm is authorized to monitor. A scope might include public pages such as disclosures, pricing, service descriptions, privacy notices, contact details, or partner pages. If a page requires a login, confirm that access and monitoring are approved before adding it.

Group pages by client, matter, site section, or page owner. That makes it easier to send each alert to someone who can assess it. ChangeTower describes client- and matter-based folders and routing alerts by folder in its legal and regulatory materials: ChangeTower legal and regulatory compliance.
2. Choose what counts as a change
Pick a detection rule that reflects the review question. Watching an entire page is useful when any edit could matter; a keyword rule can focus on the appearance or disappearance of specific language; selected-element monitoring can limit checks to a page region such as a fee table or disclosure. ChangeTower describes content, keyword, and smart monitoring, while Visualping documents whole-page or selected-element checks and visual, text, or code detection.

- Whole-page content: use when changes anywhere on the page deserve review.
- Selected element: use when a specific section matters and other page areas change routinely.
- Keyword: use when particular terms or phrases are the trigger.
- Plain-language condition: use only where the monitoring tool supports it, and verify what the condition actually detects.
3. Set a review cadence and reduce noise
Choose a frequency based on the importance of the page and how often it changes. ChangeTower gives daily checks for statutes, court or agency rules, and a firm’s own legal pages, and weekly checks for vendor or partner agreements. These are vendor examples, not a legal standard or a schedule that fits every client.
Exclude areas that change as part of normal operation—such as dates, rotating banners, or news feeds—when the tool permits it. Otherwise, routine updates may generate alerts that obscure changes reviewers need to see. ChangeTower’s help guidance covers target-page setup, bulk import, monitoring modes, exclusions, and review states: ChangeTower help guidance.
4. Route alerts into a human review process
Assign every monitor to a person or team and decide how an alert moves from receipt to resolution. A simple workflow can use states such as needs review, approved, or escalated. ChangeTower describes notification states and reviewer permissions; Visualping documents highlighted before-and-after changes and AI summaries. These are vendor-described features, not evidence of comparative accuracy.

- Open the changed page and confirm the alert refers to the intended URL and section.
- Compare the current content with the prior version, including context around the changed text.
- Check effective dates and whether the change appears intentional or routine.
- Record who reviewed it and whether follow-up, client communication, or legal analysis is needed.
5. Preserve records when the matter requires them
If the workflow requires a dated history, check what the provider stores and what the firm can export. ChangeTower says its page checks can store a screenshot, HTML, and capture time. That description does not establish that a stored capture will be admissible evidence or satisfy a firm’s retention obligations. Decide separately what record to keep, how long to retain it, who may access it, and whether the client has approved the arrangement.
6. Compare monitoring services by the controls you need
These capabilities come from vendor documentation; they are not an independent benchmark of accuracy, security, or performance.

7. Use a screenshot API when visual records are part of the workflow
Screenshot capture can complement change alerts by creating a visual record of a page at a given point in time. It does not replace change detection, human review, authorization, or the firm’s decisions about recordkeeping. For this task, ScreenshotNeo is the screenshot API alternative to try first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
For an authorized public page, a one-request capture can save a screenshot:

8. Troubleshoot common monitoring problems
Alerts arrive too often
Check whether dates, banners, feeds, or other intentionally changing regions are triggering them. Exclude or target around those areas if the service allows it, then confirm that the remaining rule still watches the content the matter requires.
An alert does not show a meaningful change
Review the detection mode and compare the actual versions. A visual or code difference may reflect a layout or technical change rather than a change to relevant wording. Adjust the monitored region or rule and keep a human review step.
A page is not being monitored as expected
Confirm the URL, the selected page region, the schedule, and whether the page requires approved authenticated access. Ask the provider whether that page type and access method are supported; the cited product documentation does not establish reliable handling of every login-protected page.
A record cannot be exported or shared as needed
Check retention, export formats, permissions, and access terms before relying on a service for a matter record. If those controls are not adequate, choose an approved recordkeeping method rather than assuming alerts or screenshots will remain available indefinitely.
9. Security, confidentiality, and authorization checks
Before deployment, assess the client’s authorization, confidentiality requirements, access controls, retention needs, and the provider’s service terms. This is especially important for pages behind a login. The cited product materials explain monitoring mechanics; they do not establish that any provider meets a firm’s legal or ethical obligations. Obtain the relevant client and firm approvals and assess each deployment on its own terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a website-change alert prove that a client page was changed improperly?
No. It flags a difference for review; the alert alone does not establish legal significance or authorization.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a screenshot API replace website-change monitoring?
No. A screenshot captures a page view; it does not by itself detect changes between captures or determine what a difference means.
