Laptop heat pipes and vapor chambers are sealed, passive two-phase heat-transfer devices. They move heat away from a CPU or GPU by repeatedly evaporating and condensing a working fluid, then hand that heat to metal fins. Fans push air through those fins and out of the chassis. The devices transport heat; they do not eliminate it.
A heat pipe is a narrow tube that routes heat along a chosen path. A vapor chamber is a flatter enclosure that spreads heat across a broader area. Neither label alone proves that one laptop will run cooler. The cold plate, thermal interface, device size, wick, fin stack, fans, airflow, power limits and exact chassis design determine the result.

How does heat get from the CPU to the laptop fan?
The cooling path is a chain of parts, not a single component. Heat generated in the processor first crosses a thermal interface—typically a paste or pad—into a conductive cold plate. The cold plate contacts a heat pipe or vapor chamber. That sealed device carries energy to a condenser area attached to fins. Fans then move air through the fins, and vents discharge the warmed air.

If the fin stack cannot reject heat to air, a larger pipe or chamber cannot solve the bottleneck.

- Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
- Heat source: CPU, GPU or another hot component.
- Interface and cold plate: spreads contact pressure and conducts heat into the two-phase device.
- Pipe or chamber: transports and, depending on geometry, spreads heat.

Blocking an intake, clogging fins with dust or restricting an exhaust can therefore raise temperatures even when the internal heat pipe or chamber is functioning normally.
How do heat pipes work in a laptop?
Evaporation at the hot section
A heat pipe is a sealed tube containing a working fluid and an internal wick. The section over the CPU or GPU is the evaporator. Heat entering the tube causes liquid there to evaporate. Changing from liquid to vapor absorbs a large amount of energy without requiring the entire pipe to reach the source temperature.
Vapor travel to the condenser
The vapor moves through the hollow center toward a cooler section, usually where the pipe is bonded to a fin stack or another heat spreader. This movement is driven by the temperature and pressure difference between the hot and cool regions. A pipe can be bent or routed around components, allowing a concentrated source to connect to a remote fin assembly.
Condensation and liquid return
At the cooler end, vapor condenses back into liquid and releases its stored thermal energy into the pipe wall and then the fins. The wick’s tiny passages draw that liquid back toward the evaporator by capillary action. The cycle repeats as long as a temperature difference remains. A laptop heat pipe can therefore operate without a pump or motor.

The internal fluid is real liquid, but it is sealed inside the factory assembly. It is not an open reservoir that users refill. Damage, a puncture or a failed seal can compromise operation; opening a pipe is not a practical maintenance procedure.
What is a vapor chamber?
A vapor chamber applies the same evaporation, vapor transport, condensation and capillary-return cycle in a flat enclosure. Instead of concentrating transport in one tube, its internal vapor space and wick extend across a plane. Heat entering one region can spread laterally before reaching several condenser areas.
This geometry is useful when a laptop has a broad CPU or GPU contact area, multiple heat sources, or several fin stacks that need to share heat. A chamber can also distribute a concentrated hotspot over more of a cold plate. Delta’s component descriptions discuss slim heat pipes and vapor chambers as related two-phase designs; the practical difference is the shape and resulting routing options, not a different physical principle.

Heat pipe vs. vapor chamber: what is the difference?
| Design | Geometry | Best fit in a laptop layout | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat pipe | Sealed tube with an evaporator and condenser along its length | Routing heat from a concentrated chip to a fin stack that may be offset or shared | Heat collection and spreading are constrained by the tube’s contact area and route |
| Vapor chamber | Flat sealed plate with a broad vapor space and wick | Spreading heat over a wide contact area or toward multiple condenser regions | Capacity and benefit depend on chamber size, wick, interfaces and the rest of the assembly |
A tube may be the better engineering choice where components are separated and the available path must bend. A chamber may be advantageous where a thin chassis needs planar spreading. Some laptops combine chambers and pipes, while others use several pipes connected to common fins. The correct comparison is between complete thermal assemblies, not names on a specification sheet.
Does a vapor chamber cool a laptop better?
Not automatically. ASUS characterizes vapor chambers as a more robust solution that can supplement or replace heat pipes in some high-performance laptops, but that is a manufacturer description rather than a controlled comparison across all designs. The available technical descriptions do not establish a universal measured performance advantage for chambers.

Identify whether the device covers only the CPU, only the GPU, or both, and whether memory or power components share the cold plate. A chamber with broad coverage can be useful only if its interfaces make good contact. A nominally smaller pipe can perform well when it is pressed evenly against the source and coupled to ample fins.

Condenser and fin area
Trace where each pipe or chamber ends. Count the fin stacks, their surface area and whether CPU and GPU heat share one exchanger. Transport capacity is wasted if the condenser is undersized or poorly coupled to the fins.
Fans, intakes and exhaust
Check fan count and placement, intake openings, exhaust direction and chassis restrictions. Two identical chambers can produce different temperatures when one laptop has more fin area and a less restrictive airflow path.
Power and workload settings
Compare the exact processor and graphics configuration, firmware mode, sustained power limits and workload. A short burst benchmark can hide the behavior that matters during a long render or game. Prefer measurements made under similar power and ambient conditions. Do not infer a temperature, noise or battery improvement from the cooling label alone.

Do laptop heat pipes contain liquid?
Yes. A sealed heat pipe or vapor chamber contains a selected working fluid plus a wick. The fluid changes phase inside the enclosure: liquid near the heat source becomes vapor, vapor condenses at cooler locations, and the wick returns liquid. The quantity and formulation are set during manufacture and are not specified by the public name “heat pipe.”

The enclosure is designed to keep the fluid in a low-pressure internal environment. Bending a purpose-built pipe during manufacture can be normal, but crushing, drilling or cutting it can cause leaks and destroy the capillary path. Users should not attempt to drain, refill or open one.
Why the wick matters
The wick is a porous structure lining or attached to the inner wall. Its capillary pressure pulls condensate toward the evaporator, allowing the device to return liquid even when gravity is unfavorable. Wick design also influences how much heat the device can carry and how well it tolerates different orientations.
Orientation can affect some designs because gravity may assist or oppose capillary return, although a properly designed laptop device is intended for the positions in which the computer is used. Capacity is also limited: if evaporation consumes liquid faster than the wick can return it, the hot region can dry out and thermal performance falls. The exact threshold depends on construction and is not supplied by a generic product label.

What happens when a laptop overheats?
Rising temperature usually means the complete heat-rejection path cannot keep up with the current load. Possible causes include blocked vents, dust-packed fins, a failing fan, poor interface contact, an inadequate fin stack, an unusually high sustained power setting or a damaged pipe or chamber.
- Temperature rises quickly, then clocks drop: the system may be reaching its thermal control limit and reducing CPU or GPU power.
- One exhaust is hot while the other is barely warm: airflow imbalance, a stopped fan or a blocked fin path is possible.
- Fan noise is high but temperatures remain excessive: inspect dust, fin contact and the thermal interface rather than assuming the fan needs a higher speed.
- Sudden failure after impact or repair: a bent pipe, broken seal or uneven cold-plate mounting may be involved.
Shut down if the laptop shows abnormal shutdowns, burning odor, visible damage or a fan that will not spin. Cleaning accessible vents and ensuring the machine sits on a hard surface are low-risk steps. Internal disassembly, interface replacement and heat-pipe replacement require the exact model and service procedure; assemblies are not interchangeable merely because they have the same shape.
How to compare cooling designs before buying or repairing
- Record the exact SKU. Product families can ship with different CPUs, GPUs, fin stacks and cooling assemblies. Use the full model and regional configuration.
- Map the heat path. Determine which chips contact the cold plate, whether heat is shared, and where pipes or chambers meet the fins.
- Check airflow hardware. Note fan count, intake and exhaust locations, fin-stack size and whether vents are blocked by the chassis or display hinge.
- Find comparable measurements. Look for sustained workloads tested at similar ambient temperature, power mode and firmware settings. Treat isolated manufacturer claims as design descriptions, not universal benchmarks.
- For repairs, verify the part. Obtain the manufacturer service part number when possible. A generic pipe, thermal paste or cooling pad cannot be assumed compatible, and an accessory pad has no guaranteed temperature reduction.
AMD’s technical material on two-phase components provides broader engineering context, while manufacturer explanations from ASUS, ASUS ROG, Delta and MSI illustrate how these devices are applied in particular systems. Those sources describe principles and products; they do not replace a controlled comparison of two laptop SKUs.
The practical verdict
Heat pipes and vapor chambers move laptop heat by phase change: evaporation collects energy, vapor carries it, condensation releases it, and a wick returns liquid. Pipes favor routed, point-to-point transport; chambers favor broad planar spreading. The winning design is the one whose interfaces, two-phase device, fin stacks, fans and vents are matched to the laptop’s sustained heat load. Judge the complete configuration and measured behavior, not the “vapor chamber” or “heat pipe” badge by itself.
