Lake Most is an artificial pit lake in northwestern Bohemia, created by flooding the residual pit of the former Most–Ležáky brown-coal mine. Filling began in October 2008 and reached the mine operator’s final operating water level in September 2014. The lake now occupies the site of the former royal town of Most, demolished decades earlier to make way for mining.
How did Lake Most form?
Lake Most formed through hydraulic reclamation: water was directed into the residual pit left by the Most–Ležáky lignite mine. It is therefore a human-made mine-reclamation lake, not a natural lake. Mining at Ležáky ended in 1999, according to the state mining-reclamation company DIAMO.

DIAMO dates the ceremonial beginning of filling to 24 October 2008. Filling did not proceed continuously: the operator records a pause in 2012 and 2013. The final operating water level was reached in September 2014. The start of filling and the point at which the lake reached its operating level were separate milestones nearly six years apart.
What was there before Lake Most?
The lake covers the site of the former royal town of Most. The town was demolished in the 1970s and 1980s to enable brown-coal extraction; the lake did not replace an intact town directly, but followed the mining that transformed and excavated the landscape. Radio Prague International’s report on the lake’s 2020 official opening and the National Heritage Institute’s account of the historic town and mined landscape provide context for that history.

Why Lake Most is more than a new body of water
The lake’s formation joined two different histories: the destruction of the former town of Most to extract coal, and the later effort to reclaim the resulting mine landscape. Its scale and recreational uses are visible outcomes of that reclamation, but they do not erase what preceded it. Describing Lake Most accurately means keeping the full timeline in view: town demolition in the 1970s and 1980s, the end of mining in 1999, the start of filling in 2008, and the final operating level in 2014.
