She made swimsuits to order, built the brand alongside a day job, and reinvested its revenue instead of raising outside capital. In July 2026, she completed a seven-figure acquisition after listing the business with an online brokerage, Entrepreneur reported. The exact sale price and terms were not disclosed.
She started with fabric, skills and a specific product idea
Mayers grew up outside Dallas, took a fashion class in high school and studied product development at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. After graduating in 2014, she worked in design and product development at BCBG, then as a buyer at Tobi. She began Slate Swim from home in November 2015 while still working at Tobi.

The $300 covered fabric, not a full equipment setup: Mayers already had a sewing machine. She made swimwear to order, which let her begin without first filling a warehouse with inventory. Her product concept was specific: minimalist silhouettes, neutral colors, few seams and soft, thin fabric. She saw room between mass-market swimsuits and higher-end, trend-forward designs.

Early wholesale traction came before a production system
Before Slate had inventory or a manufacturer, Agenda Trade Show invited the brand to exhibit after seeing its early Instagram account. Mayers quit her Tobi job shortly before the event and made 30 samples by hand in her apartment. Entrepreneur reported that Slate gained 22 retail accounts there, including Diane’s Beachwear.
A contact she met at the show connected her with a small Los Angeles production shop. Later, Slate shifted production overseas to a small family-owned manufacturer. The sequence matters: the samples helped demonstrate the product and open wholesale relationships before the company had scaled production.

She grew the business by keeping its scope narrow
Mayers used Slate’s revenue to fund production, branding, photography, ecommerce, inventory and operations. Rather than add categories such as menswear or resortwear, she kept the company focused on swimwear. She recalled that a trend-led neon-yellow collection performed poorly and told Entrepreneur, “I would much rather be successful at one thing than mediocre at many things.”

Slate supplied suits for photographers’ shoots in exchange for credit and tags, and gifted products to people who fit the brand. Mayers recalled that one influencer post generated 30 orders overnight, but described growth as the result of building small relationships consistently rather than depending on a single viral moment.

Paid advertising came later, alongside a larger operating footprint
Slate did not invest in paid advertising until 2021, according to Entrepreneur. Mayers said the first year with paid marketing produced about 76% growth; the interview does not specify the exact measurement period. More orders required added fulfillment capacity and delegation. She described the slower pace of expansion as manageable: “Everything kind of grew at a slower pace, but very, very manageable.”
For Slate’s final three years under Mayers’s ownership, she reported 36% year-over-year growth. She also said the business was 92% direct-to-consumer and 8% wholesale. These are founder-reported figures carried by Entrepreneur, not independently audited results cited in the interview. They describe Slate’s particular mix and trajectory, not a tested comparison showing that one channel or growth strategy works best for other brands.

What the reported seven-figure sale does—and does not—tell us
Mayers listed Slate with an online brokerage shortly after the brand’s 10-year anniversary and completed an acquisition in July 2026, Entrepreneur reported on October 2, 2026. The source describes the transaction as seven figures but does not disclose the exact purchase price, buyer, valuation multiple or deal structure.
Mayers said Slate was profitable and organized for a sale, with contractors rather than full-time salaried employees. She also said her lawyer described the acquisition as unusually fast. She is supporting the transition. These details offer context for the sale, but they do not establish a universal checklist for selling a small business or reveal the company’s financials.

The practical lessons—and their limits
Slate’s path shows how a founder can connect a small product test to a focused operating business: make initial samples, use a trade show to meet retailers and production contacts, reinvest revenue in the capabilities the business needs, and add marketing and fulfillment capacity as orders grow. It also shows a trade-off: made-to-order production reduced the need to begin with inventory, while later wholesale and direct-to-consumer growth required production and operational investment.
- Start with a defined offer. Slate’s minimalist swimwear identity gave samples and marketing a consistent point of view.
- Use early work to make relationships tangible. The trade-show samples helped Slate show retailers what it made before it had an established production setup.
- Grow within the business’s capacity. Mayers described reinvestment and gradual delegation rather than expansion across multiple product categories.
- Treat the numbers as one founder’s account. The interview reports growth and channel figures, but does not supply audited statements or enough transaction detail to calculate a sale multiple.
Mayers told Entrepreneur, “You have to have that passion that’s going to wake you up every morning. If you don’t have that, you’re just not going to get far.” She plans to launch Knitte, a minimalist contemporary womenswear brand, in spring 2027; that is a stated plan, not a completed launch.
