Jellyfin does not turn an ordinary library playlist into a television channel by itself. A separate channel generator, such as ErsatzTV or Tunarr, schedules your movies and episodes into linear channels, then exposes an M3U stream playlist and XMLTV programme guide. Jellyfin imports the M3U as a tuner and the XMLTV as guide data, so the channels and listings appear in Live TV.
What “pseudo-live TV” means in Jellyfin
Pseudo-live, or linear-style, television is scheduled playback from your own media library. Instead of choosing an episode on demand, you open a channel and join whatever programme is currently playing. The next programme follows according to a timetable, much like a conventional broadcast channel.

Jellyfin is the viewing and recording server in this arrangement. Its official Live Broadcast documentation describes watching and recording live television from supported hardware and listening to internet radio. For pseudo-live channels, however, the broadcast-like scheduling is normally performed by another application.
Jellyfin’s job
Jellyfin Live TV expects two different inputs:
- A tuner source: the channels and stream addresses that Jellyfin can open. Built-in tuner types include M3U and HDHomeRun.
- Programme-guide data: listings that tell Jellyfin what is scheduled on each channel. Jellyfin supports guide formats and providers including XMLTV and Schedules Direct.
Guide entries must be mapped to the corresponding tuner channels. A guide file without a matching channel feed cannot create a playable stream, and a stream feed without guide data will not produce a useful programme grid.

The generator’s job
A generator such as ErsatzTV or Tunarr reads media from your library, applies channel rules and schedules, and serves the resulting streams. It also publishes metadata describing the programmes. The generator is therefore the part that decides what plays at 8:00, what follows at 8:30, and whether a programme appears in the electronic programme guide (EPG).
The three pieces of data in the handoff
| Piece | Produced by | What it controls | Where it goes in Jellyfin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playlist and schedule | Channel generator | Which library items play, in what order, and at what times | Remains configured in the generator |
| M3U | Channel generator | Channel names, identifiers and stream addresses | Dashboard > Live TV > Tuner Devices > M3U Tuner |
| XMLTV | Channel generator | Programme titles, times and other EPG metadata | Dashboard > Live TV > TV Guide Data > XMLTV |
The M3U is not a schedule and XMLTV is not a video stream. M3U tells Jellyfin where the channels are; XMLTV tells it what should be shown in the guide. The generator’s schedule is what connects those two outputs to actual media.
What you need before configuring Jellyfin
- A running Jellyfin Server on a computer that can access your media library. Jellyfin’s quick-start guidance places the server application on the computer serving the media.
- A channel generator installed and able to read the movies, episodes or other media you want to schedule.
- At least one channel and a schedule in that generator.
- The generator’s M3U URL and XMLTV URL. ErsatzTV exposes both URLs in its interface.
- Network access from Jellyfin Server to the generator. If the services run on different machines, use an address reachable from the Jellyfin host, not merely a browser address that works on your desktop.
No particular mini PC is required by the documented setup. Existing hardware can host Jellyfin if it can run the server application and access the media; the appropriate capacity depends on your library, simultaneous viewers and whether transcoding is needed.

Set up a pseudo-live channel with ErsatzTV
The labels below follow the documented ErsatzTV-to-Jellyfin arrangement. Other generators use different menus, but the handoff remains an M3U tuner plus XMLTV guide data.
- Build the channel in ErsatzTV. Add the media libraries it should use, create a channel, and define its schedule. A schedule places content into a channel’s time flow; a playlist by itself is not yet a Jellyfin channel.
- Use playlists for repeatable content rules. In ErsatzTV, a playlist can contain collections, shows, seasons, episodes, movies, music videos, other video, songs, images or remote streams. Arrange the playlist and choose the playback-order behaviour appropriate to that item.
- Add the playlist to the schedule. A playlist can be used as a schedule item. The schedule determines when the playlist contributes programmes and how the channel advances through its day.
- Copy the feed addresses. In ErsatzTV’s interface, locate the generated M3U URL and XMLTV URL. Keep the two addresses separate; they serve different purposes.
- Add the tuner in Jellyfin. Open the Jellyfin Dashboard, choose Live TV, add a tuner device, select M3U Tuner, and enter the M3U URL from ErsatzTV. Save the device and allow Jellyfin to retrieve the channel list.
- Add the guide provider. In the same Live TV area, add TV Guide Data, select XMLTV, and enter the XMLTV URL. Save the provider and wait for the guide import.
- Map and refresh. If Jellyfin’s channel identifiers and the guide identifiers do not line up automatically, use the channel-mapping controls to associate each guide entry with the correct tuner channel. Run a guide refresh after changing the generator’s channel or schedule.
- Verify playback. Open Live TV, select a channel and confirm that the current stream plays. Then open the guide and check that the programme title and time correspond to the generator’s schedule.
Changing a playlist or schedule changes what the generator publishes. Jellyfin may need a channel or guide refresh before the new metadata appears, while an already-open stream can continue until its current programme boundary.
How ErsatzTV playlists affect the channel
Playlist contents
ErsatzTV treats a playlist as an ordered list of collections or media items. A collection can represent a group of episodes or films, while individual entries can be scheduled directly. This lets one playlist express a complete rotation, such as several seasons, a set of movies or a mixture of media types.

Playback order
Playlist items can use ordering modes such as shuffle, chronological or random. Television content can also use season-and-episode ordering. Select an ordering mode deliberately: chronological order is suitable for a story that should progress, whereas shuffle or random creates a less predictable channel.

“Play All” and flattening
When Play All is used for a playlist item, ErsatzTV flattens that item so each media item in the collection plays before the schedule advances to its next item. Without that behaviour, a collection may be treated as one schedulable unit rather than a run of every member.
EPG visibility
The Show In EPG setting controls whether media generated from that playlist item receives an electronic programme-guide entry. Turning it off can keep filler or transitional material out of the guide while it still plays. Turning it on makes the scheduled media visible to Jellyfin after XMLTV is imported.

Playlist versus schedule
The simplest mental model is: a playlist defines the pool or sequence, a schedule places that sequence into a channel’s clock, and XMLTV exposes the resulting programme information. A normal Jellyfin library playlist does not perform these three jobs and therefore does not automatically become a Live TV channel.
ErsatzTV and Tunarr: what differs for this use case
| Comparison point | ErsatzTV | Tunarr |
|---|---|---|
| Channel creation | Builds channels from library media, playlists and schedules; playlist ordering, Play All and Show In EPG affect playback and listings. | Creates scheduled channels from library media; its documentation describes channel configuration and active-channel guide generation. |
| Jellyfin connection | Publishes an M3U feed for the tuner and an XMLTV feed for guide data. | Supports M3U and HDHomeRun-style client connections. |
| Guide output | Provides XMLTV for scheduled channel listings. | Generates XMLTV guide data for active channels. |
| Operational caveat | The documented setup requires adding both feeds and mapping channels when needed. | Tunarr documentation reports that some users have seen stability problems at programme boundaries when it is configured as an M3U tuner in Jellyfin, particularly when Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing. The same documentation associates those reports with upstream FFmpeg-related issues. |
Neither project is established by these documented features as an overall winner. Choose based on the scheduling model, client connection modes, guide metadata and the way each project fits your media and server configuration. Treat the Tunarr boundary behaviour as a configuration-dependent report, not a universal defect or a guarantee that every installation will fail.

The channel is missing from Live TV
- Open the M3U URL from the Jellyfin host or inspect the generator’s channel list to confirm that it is reachable.
- Confirm that the M3U tuner was saved under Dashboard > Live TV and that Jellyfin completed a channel refresh.
- Check that the generator channel is enabled and has a valid schedule.
The channel plays but has no guide listings
- Verify that the XMLTV URL was added as a TV Guide Data provider, not as a tuner.
- Run a guide refresh and inspect the imported channel identifiers.
- Use Jellyfin’s mapping controls when the identifiers or names differ between the M3U and XMLTV outputs.
The guide shows the wrong programme
- Inspect the generator’s schedule and playlist order first; XMLTV reflects what the generator publishes.
- Check whether a playlist item has Show In EPG disabled.
- Refresh guide data after changing start times, channel IDs or programme metadata.
Playback stops or changes unexpectedly at a programme boundary
Check the generator’s logs and the media format being delivered. With Tunarr, its documentation records reports of boundary instability in some Jellyfin M3U configurations when remuxing or transcoding is not occurring, with a possible FFmpeg relationship. That evidence is conditional, so test the same channel with the relevant Jellyfin playback and transcoding settings before changing an entire installation.

The playlist does not advance as expected
Review whether the item is set to Play All, which flattens a collection into its individual media, and confirm the selected shuffle, chronological or random mode. Also check whether the playlist was actually added as a schedule item; an unreferenced playlist cannot affect a channel clock.
Generators, tuner plugins and TVHeadend are different choices
Jellyfin offers optional Live TV plugins for integrations such as NextPVR and TVHeadend. Those integrations connect Jellyfin to tuner or broadcast-management systems. A pseudo-live generator has a different purpose: it manufactures scheduled channels from library media and exposes them as feeds that Jellyfin can consume.
TVHeadend can also be configured through M3U and XMLTV without relying on its Jellyfin plugin, according to Jellyfin’s setup documentation. The important question is not whether a product is called a tuner, plugin or generator, but whether it supplies the stream list Jellyfin can open and guide data that maps to those streams.

What to expect after the first setup
Once the feeds are connected, Jellyfin is primarily a client and guide interface for the generated channels. Channel logic remains in the generator: edit schedules, playlist membership, ordering and EPG visibility there. In Jellyfin, maintain the tuner and guide providers, refresh imported data after structural changes, and keep channel mappings aligned.
This separation also makes diagnosis easier. If the stream itself is absent, investigate the M3U output, generator channel and network path. If video works but listings are absent or incorrect, investigate XMLTV generation, guide refresh and channel mapping. If a programme changes at the wrong time, inspect the generator schedule and playlist rules before altering Jellyfin’s guide settings.
