India’s Income Tax Department combines central governance by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), regional field formations, and specialist directorates and centres. It sits within the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance. The statutory ranks listed in Section 116 of the Income-tax Act, 1961, show who may be an income-tax authority; they are not a complete organization chart or a way to identify the officer handling a particular taxpayer’s case.

Where does the Income Tax Department sit in government?

The department is part of the Department of Revenue, which is within the Ministry of Finance. At the department’s apex is the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the statutory body responsible for direct-tax administration. The department’s official description gives the Board’s composition as a Chairman and six Members, whose portfolios cover areas such as income tax, legislation, administration, audit and judicial matters, taxpayer services and revenue, and systems and faceless assessment. Member responsibilities also include oversight of designated formations and zonal charges. CBDT: Functions, Organisation & Allocation of Work

What is the role of CBDT?

CBDT is the department’s central governance and oversight body. Its members have portfolios that distribute responsibility across policy and administration, while regional and specialist formations carry out assigned work. This means the department is not simply a single ladder in which every matter moves through each rank in turn.

What are the different ranks in the Income Tax Department?

Section 116 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 sets out classes of income-tax authorities in statutory sequence. The list is a framework of recognized authority classes, not a complete account of operational reporting lines or the powers exercised in every situation. Income-tax Act, 1961, Section 116

  1. Central Board of Direct Taxes
  2. Principal Directors General of Income Tax or Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax
  3. Directors General of Income Tax or Chief Commissioners of Income Tax
  4. Principal Directors of Income Tax or Principal Commissioners of Income Tax
  5. Directors of Income Tax or Commissioners of Income Tax, including Commissioners of Income-tax (Appeals)
  6. Additional Directors of Income Tax or Additional Commissioners of Income Tax
  7. Joint Directors of Income Tax or Joint Commissioners of Income Tax
  8. Deputy Directors of Income Tax or Deputy Commissioners of Income Tax
  9. Assistant Directors of Income Tax or Assistant Commissioners of Income Tax
  10. Income-tax Officers
  11. Tax Recovery Officers
  12. Inspectors of Income Tax

The Act identifies authority classes; the relevant statutory provisions, orders, jurisdiction, and process determine how powers and work are assigned. Rank alone does not reveal which office is responsible for a particular matter.

How do regional and specialist formations fit together?

Regional formations provide a geographical dimension to the department’s work, while directorates and centres are arranged around particular functions. These dimensions coexist with the statutory rank framework rather than replacing it. A regional charge should not automatically be read as matching a state boundary.

Regional leadership

The department’s 2026 directory lists regional Principal Chief Commissioner/Principal Director General and Chief Commissioner/Director General formations. It also lists separate directorates and the National Faceless Assessment Centre (NaFAC) and National Faceless Appeal Centre (NFAC). These listings illustrate the mix of regional and specialist structures; they are not a permanent roster of officeholders or arrangements. Departmental Directory 2026

Administrative directorates

The department’s administration overview says the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Administration) supervises specified directorates headed by Directors of Income Tax, which report through that Principal DG to CBDT. Listed areas include public relations, publications and official language; inspection and examination; audit; recovery; and TDS. About Us: Principal DGIT (Administration)

Other specialist formations and faceless centres

The regional office index separately lists formations dealing with Systems, Vigilance, Exemptions, International Taxation, Intelligence and Criminal Investigation, and Investigation. NaFAC and NFAC appear as distinct centres in the 2026 directory, reflecting a faceless dimension alongside conventional regional formations. Their presence does not mean every assessment or appeal follows the same route. CCA/DG Sub-Sites

Which income-tax officer handles my case?

The general rank list cannot identify an individual taxpayer’s responsible office. For a specific assessment, appeal, or other proceeding, use the notice, the taxpayer’s official portal account, or the official jurisdiction information relevant to the case. The applicable process and assigned jurisdiction matter more than a generic organization chart. Departmental Directory 2026

Which details can change?

The broad relationship between the Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue, CBDT, regional formations, and specialist offices explains the structure. Individual names, postings, regional arrangements, contact details, directorate organization, and faceless-centre operating details can change; consult the live official department site for current information.
