A 2023 laboratory study found that iron-sulfide veneers can form on decaying soft-bodied animals under some conditions, supporting one proposed explanation for how Ediacaran organisms were preserved as surface impressions. The experiments show that iron can contribute to this process, but not that it explains every Ediacaran fossil: sulfate, microbes, tissue properties and sites where minerals can begin to grow also matter.
What is the Ediacaran “death-mask” hypothesis?
The Ediacara biota are soft-bodied fossils from the Neoproterozoic. Because these organisms lacked hard skeletons, their preservation as impressions in sediment raises a chemical question: how could a delicate body leave a durable record?

The death-mask hypothesis proposes that microbial mats and early mineral precipitation helped preserve the surfaces of buried organisms. In this model, minerals form at the boundary between a carcass and sediment, creating a veneer that can retain an impression as the organism decays. Gibson, Schiffbauer and Wallace’s 2023 study tested whether iron could help produce such a veneer in laboratory decay experiments. The study’s abstract and record
How did the researchers test the idea?
The researchers allowed sea anemones and sea slugs to decay in experimental setups with different simulated sedimentary iron concentrations. They supplied bioavailable iron using fine zero-valent iron powder, then examined the results after 28 days. This was a test of a proposed preservation mechanism, not a recreation of an entire Ediacaran ecosystem.
#1 Best Overall
- Genuine natural pyrite (FeS₂), known as “Fool’s Gold” - metallic-brass shine with classic mineral coloring
- Two-piece set: each nugget ~1″–2″, ideal size for display, pockets, or first-time mineral collecting
- Perfect for rockhounds, beginners, or collectors - adds authentic "raw earth" character to mineral displays, desks, or shelves
- Great tactile and visual appeal - each nugget has its own shape, texture, and natural geometry, highlighting pyrite’s cubic and pyritohedral crystal structure
- Compact and easy to handle - small enough for casual use but heavy enough to feel like real minerals in the hand (pyrite’s density gives it a satisfying heft)
The iron source is an important qualification: the powder made iron available in the experiments, but it did not directly reproduce the presumed Ediacaran sedimentary environment. Chemistry World also notes the researchers’ caveat that the mineral precursors produced in the experiment may differ from those associated with actual fossil specimens. Chemistry World’s report on the experiments
What formed in the experiments?
After 28 days, the researchers reported iron-sulfide and probable oxide veneers in some experimental conditions. The primary paper describes coherent iron-sulfide veneers on sea-anemone tissue in treatment groups with 1.0%–5.0% initial iron by weight. It reports veneers in groups above 1.0 weight percent iron. That figure is specific to these laboratory systems, not a universal iron threshold for fossil formation or a measurement of ancient seawater. The study’s result is that iron-sulfide veneers formed under certain tested conditions—not that any sediment above a fixed iron concentration will preserve soft tissue.
Why iron alone was not enough
The authors conclude that iron was required for this style of preservation in their model, but its presence alone did not guarantee a veneer. They identify several other factors that can affect iron-sulfide mineral formation:

- You will get one of the Pyrite Egg similar to the one in the listing, the size and the color of the egg may slightly vary as well due to the fact that all minerals are different. (see photo, the photos are taken under bright light, stand included)! Average 1 egg Size: 56mm x 43mm / 2 3/16 x 1 11/16 Inches; Average 1 egg Weight 230g / 8.1oz;
- Pyrite is a brass-yellow mineral with a bright metallic luster. It has a chemical composition of iron disulfide (FeS2) and is the most common sulfide mineral. It forms at high and low temperatures and occurs, usually in small quantities, in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks worldwide.
- The name "pyrite" is after the Greek "pyr" meaning "fire." This name was given because pyrite can be used to create the sparks needed for starting a fire if it is struck against metal or another hard material. Pieces of pyrite have also been used as a spark-producing material in flintlock firearms. Pyrite has a nickname that has become famous - "Fool's Gold." The mineral's gold color, metallic luster and high specific gravity often cause it to be mistaken for gold by inexperienced prospectors.
- Chemical Formula: FeS2; Hardness: 6 - 6.5; Color: Yellowish gray to gray. Some specimens oxidize and form a yellow-brown or iridescent film on exposed crystal faces.

- Sulfate in seawater: sulfate provides a chemical ingredient involved in forming iron sulfides.
- Sulfate-reducing microbes: microbial activity can help drive the reactions that produce sulfide.
- Nucleation sites: surfaces or particles where mineral growth can begin may influence whether a veneer develops.
- Tissue properties: the structure of the decaying tissue can affect how minerals form at the carcass–sediment boundary.
The results therefore suggest that death-mask formation may be possible across a range of conditions, rather than requiring one narrowly defined “perfect storm.” They do not reduce the process to iron abundance alone. The authors’ conclusions

Producing iron-sulfide veneers in a laboratory supports the feasibility of the death-mask mechanism: a mineral coating can form around decaying soft tissue under experimental conditions. That is useful evidence for a chemical explanation of preservation, but an experimental analogue is not proof that the same process accounts for every Ediacaran fossil.

- Genuine pyrite specimen from Peru featuring dozens of interlocking cubic crystals with metallic brassy luster and fine striations
- Measures approximately 3.5 inches x 2 inches x 2 inches and weighs approximately 1.25 pounds
- Natural, untreated mineral specimen authenticated before listing with no chemical enhancement or modification
- Iron sulfide (FeS₂) crystal cluster displaying characteristic pyrite crystal habit with well-formed cubic faces and sharply defined geometry
- Each specimen is individually formed and may vary slightly in shape and size; piece received may differ from product image shown
The authors do not propose death masks as the sole preservation mechanism. Nor does this experiment establish that the experimental mineral precursors were identical to those in fossils. The study tests one part of the preservation question; geological evidence and other preservation processes remain relevant to explaining particular fossils.
