For an Indian IPO, applying does not guarantee shares. In an ASBA application, your bid amount is placed on hold in your bank account rather than sent away; with UPI ASBA, you approve a UPI mandate that creates the hold. After the basis of allotment is finalized, the amount for shares actually allotted is debited, any excess is released, and allotted shares are credited to your demat account before listing. The exact dates differ by issue, so use the offer document, named registrar and exchange notices for the live schedule.
Scope: This guide covers Indian public issues and the retail investor’s ASBA and UPI ASBA routes. Procedures, limits and calendars can change; the figures and milestones below are from SEBI and NSE guidance issued in 2024–2025 and should be checked against the current issue documents.

What IPO allotment means
Allotment is the issuer’s formal allocation of shares after bidding closes. The registrar reconciles bids, applies the issue’s category and allocation rules, and prepares the basis of allotment. Only then is it known which applicants receive shares and how many. A valid application is therefore a request for allocation, not a promise of allocation.
Demand, the number of shares offered and the rules for each investor category determine the result. There is no single method that can accurately be called a universal IPO lottery. Read the issue’s offer document for its stated basis, category limits and treatment of bids that are invalid, withdrawn or not fully funded. No reliable, topic-wide allotment success rate has been established by the official guidance; subscription multiples cannot be converted into an individual probability.

Where your application money goes
ASBA: a bank-account block
ASBA stands for Application Supported by Blocked Amount. You submit the bid through an eligible self-certified syndicate bank (SCSB) facility. The bank blocks the amount needed for the bid in your account. SEBI’s investor explanation says the money remains in the account until allotment and the blocked amount continues to earn interest. It is not normally transferred to the issuer when you apply.
If you receive shares, the amount for those shares is debited after allocation. If you receive none, the hold is released; because the money was blocked rather than sent as a conventional payment, there is no conventional refund transaction. NSE describes SCSBs as accepting and verifying ASBA forms, uploading bid details and later unblocking or transferring the relevant amount after the basis is finalized. ASBA was made mandatory for issues opening from 1 January 2016 under the NSE procedure described in its investor material.
UPI ASBA: a mandate to create the block
For a UPI application, you enter the bid and the applicant’s own UPI ID through a permitted intermediary. The bid is transmitted through the intermediary and exchange to the sponsor bank. The sponsor bank then sends a mandate request in your UPI app. You must approve that request; only after the mandate is validated should the bid amount be treated as blocked.
A submitted bid without successful mandate authorization is not proof that funds were blocked or that the application completed. After allocation, the sponsor bank debits the amount for allotted shares and releases the excess. If no shares are allotted, the blocked amount is released in full.
| Item | ASBA through an SCSB | UPI ASBA |
|---|---|---|
| Submission route | Eligible SCSB or its ASBA facility | Permitted intermediary such as a syndicate member, registered stock broker, registrar and transfer agent, or depository participant, using a listed UPI app and handle |
| How funds are authorized | The bank places a block on the bid amount | You approve a UPI mandate; the sponsor bank then places the block |
| What you must verify | Correct bank account, bid details and account ownership | Applicant-owned UPI ID and bank account, eligible app and channel, accurate bid details, and successful mandate authorization |
| Effect on allotment chances | The route itself does not change the probability of receiving shares; allocation follows the issue rules and valid demand | |
How IPO allotment works: the process in order
- Place the bid. Enter the investor category, lot or quantity and price details required by the issue. A UPI applicant also enters the applicant’s own UPI ID. Use only the channels listed in the issue materials.
- Authorize the block. An ASBA bank validates and blocks the amount. A UPI applicant must approve the mandate in the UPI app. Check the mandate status rather than assuming that a submitted form completed the process.
- The issue closes and bids are reconciled. The exchange passes bid information for processing. NSE says the registrar and transfer agent (RTA) processes post-bidding details and reconciles UPI bids with the sponsor bank.
- The basis of allotment is finalized. The registrar applies the issue’s category and allocation rules to valid bids and demand. The final document identifies the applicants and quantity allocated.
- Funds settle. For an allotment, the amount corresponding to the shares allocated is debited. The balance of the block is released. With no allotment, the whole block is released.
- Shares are credited and the issue lists. Allotted shares are credited in dematerialized form to the applicant’s demat account. They become tradable only when the issue lists, subject to the exchange and issue procedures. A 2024 SEBI-filed offer document states that allotted shares trade only in the dematerialized segment.
What happens after the basis of allotment
| Outcome | Money movement | Security movement |
|---|---|---|
| Shares allotted | The amount for the allocated quantity is debited; unused blocked money is released | Shares are credited to the applicant’s demat account, then can be traded after listing |
| No shares allotted | The blocked amount is released; in ASBA this is an unblocking, not a conventional refund | No IPO shares are credited |
These events can appear at different times in different systems. An allotment result, bank lien or hold, UPI mandate status, demat credit and exchange listing are separate records. Seeing one update before another is not, by itself, evidence of success or failure.
When will IPO money be unblocked?
Do not rely on a single universal “refund day.” SEBI’s 2024 offer-document guidance made a T+3 listing timeline mandatory for public issues opening on or after 1 December 2023. The same guidance says an unsuccessful UPI bidder’s account must be unblocked no later than one working day after the basis of allotment is finalized. Those are regulatory milestones, not a promise that your bank balance, UPI screen, registrar page and demat account will refresh simultaneously.

- Used Book in Good Condition
A SEBI-hosted specimen offer document from May 2025 contains six-working-day instructions for certain credit and unblocking steps. It is specimen wording and does not override a later rule or the timetable in a particular live issue. Follow the dates printed in the current offer document and the registrar’s notices. Bank and UPI processing can also affect the time at which a release becomes visible to you.
How to check your IPO allotment status
Use the issue’s registrar first
- Find the registrar named in the issue materials.
- Open that registrar’s issue-specific allotment-status service when it is published.
- Enter the requested identifier, such as PAN, application number or demat details, exactly as used in the bid.
- Save the displayed result and compare it with the amount debited or released and the later demat credit.
NSE directs investors to the issue registrar for allotment-related status. The registrar’s page is the relevant record for whether shares were allocated; a bank hold alone is not an allotment confirmation.
Use NSE’s bid-verification information for the application record
NSE describes an IPO Bid Verification module that shows bids associated with a PAN. Its FAQ says the data becomes available six days after issue closure. This is an exchange bid-verification timing statement, not a guarantee that the registrar will publish the allotment result on that same day.

Check the UPI mandate and bank hold separately
If you are waiting for the mandate, check the UPI app’s mandate or pending-request area and then contact the member through which the bid was placed. If the application is marked pending or money appears blocked, verify each layer separately: the intermediary’s application record, the UPI mandate, the bank’s lien or hold, the registrar’s allotment result and the demat account. NSE and SEBI describe these as distinct processing and reconciliation steps.

SEBI’s investor guidance says a UPI application should use an eligible SCSB, a listed UPI app and handle, and one of the allowed submission channels: a syndicate member, registered stock broker, RTA or depository participant. The retail individual investor UPI limit stated there is ₹5 lakh per transaction.

The UPI ID and bank account must belong to the applicant. SEBI states that a third-party UPI ID or a third-party bank account will not be considered for allocation. Before submitting, confirm that the name and PAN on the bid match the bank and UPI ownership details, that the app and handle are eligible, and that the mandate is approved from the correct account.

Common failure points and what to do
No UPI mandate arrives
- Confirm that the UPI ID was entered correctly and belongs to the applicant.
- Open the UPI app directly and check pending mandates; do not approve an unfamiliar request.
- Check whether the application was sent through an allowed intermediary and whether the bank is an eligible SCSB.
- Contact the member through which the bid was placed, as NSE advises, and ask it to verify transmission to the sponsor bank.
The bid was submitted but the mandate was not approved
Treat the application as incomplete until the mandate is successfully authorized and the amount is shown as blocked. A submission receipt alone does not establish a completed UPI ASBA bid.
Money is still blocked after a no-allotment result
Compare the registrar’s result with the issue timetable, then ask your bank or sponsor bank to trace the lien or mandate release. Keep the application number, PAN, UPI reference and screenshots of the result. The expected regulatory milestone for an unsuccessful UPI bidder is release no later than one working day after basis finalization, but the visible account update can depend on bank implementation.
The registrar shows an allotment but shares are not visible in demat
Check the demat account’s transaction or pending-credit view and confirm that the DP details in the application were correct. If the credit is absent after the issue’s stated credit date, contact the registrar and your depository participant with the allotment confirmation. Do not assume that a successful registrar result means the shares are already tradable; listing is a later event.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe bank shows a debit but the result is unclear
Match the debit amount with the quantity and price allotted, if shown. If the amount does not correspond, ask the bank and registrar to reconcile the application. A debit entry without a registrar confirmation can reflect settlement processing rather than a complete status display.
A practical application checklist
- Read the current issue document for category rules, bid dates, basis-of-allotment date, credit date and listing date.
- Use an eligible SCSB or an allowed intermediary and submission channel.
- Enter the applicant’s own PAN, demat details, bank account and, for UPI, UPI ID.
- Check the bid quantity, price and category before submitting.
- For UPI, approve the mandate and confirm that it shows as authorized and funds are blocked.
- After closure, use the named registrar for the allotment result; use NSE’s bid-verification information to check the application record when available.
- Track four separate events: basis finalized, funds debited or unblocked, shares credited and listing.
- If a date passes, contact the party responsible for that record—intermediary, registrar, bank, sponsor bank or DP—rather than treating a stale screen in another system as the answer.
What you should expect, in one sequence
You submit a valid bid, authorize the ASBA block or UPI mandate, and leave the money in the account while the issue is processed. The registrar then applies the issue-specific basis of allotment. If you receive shares, the allocated amount is debited and demat shares are credited; if you receive none, the hold is released. The shares can be sold only after the issue lists. Check the live issue document and official registrar and exchange notices for the dates that control your application.
