What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Advanced iPhone spyware usually gets in through a software exploit, sometimes without any tap, call, or link opening. A zero-click attack can leave no visible clue. The strongest user-facing warning is an Apple threat notification, but that alert means Apple has detected high-confidence targeting—not that forensic examination has already proved an implant. Verify any alert through Apple’s own account page, update and harden the phone, and obtain specialist help if the risk is credible.
How does iPhone spyware infect a device?
Mercenary spyware aimed at a particular person exploits a weakness in iOS or in an Apple service that processes data automatically. The attacker sends specially crafted data to a service such as iMessage, HomeKit, or Find My. If the vulnerable component handles that data before the user interacts with it, the attack can be “zero-click.” The person does not need to tap a link, answer a call, open an attachment, or install an app.

These are documented attack paths, not a complete list of every current technique. They also describe highly targeted operations, not the normal way unwanted consumer apps reach an iPhone. A current iPhone with ordinary malware or a compromised account is a different problem from a sophisticated mercenary-spyware campaign.

Documented HomeKit and iMessage chains
Citizen Lab’s April 18, 2023 report examined three iOS 15 and iOS 16 zero-click exploit chains used in 2022 Pegasus deployments attributed to NSO Group. One chain, called PWNYOURHOME, used a first stage aimed at HomeKit and a second stage aimed at iMessage. Another, FINDMYPWN, used Find My followed by iMessage. Apple released HomeKit security improvements in iOS 16.3.1 after receiving forensic artifacts connected with the attacks. Those historical vulnerabilities should not be presented as current unpatched flaws.

A recent iMessage example
In a report published September 2, 2026, Citizen Lab and the SHARE Foundation described a confirmed Pegasus infection on the iPhone of an unnamed member of Serbia’s student movement. They found high-confidence infection indicators from December 2025 through January 2026 and reported that an iMessage zero-click exploit was used. The report said Apple had patched that exploit by iOS 18.4.1. It also said the target would not have seen the infection and that, in this specific case, Pegasus could access private data and covertly activate the microphone or camera. Those capabilities belong to the documented forensic case; they are not proof that every spyware sample works identically.
Can spyware infect an iPhone without clicking anything?
Yes. Zero-click means the exploit is triggered while an Apple service parses incoming content in the background. A message or service request can therefore be enough. Citizen Lab said the infection in its 2023 technical report would not have been visible to the target, and its 2026 case report likewise described no user-visible indication.
Zero-click does not mean every attack is invisible or that every iPhone is vulnerable. Exploit chains depend on a particular software version, service, and attacker capability. Patches can close an individual weakness, while new weaknesses may later be discovered. The practical lesson is that the absence of a suspicious tap or downloaded app does not rule out a targeted attack.

What are the signs my iPhone has spyware?
There is no dependable consumer symptom checklist for advanced iPhone spyware. Battery drain, heat, crashes, unfamiliar settings, slow performance, or unusual data use can have many ordinary causes, and none establishes a spyware infection. A zero-click compromise may produce no visible symptom at all.
The strongest visible signal: an Apple threat notification
Apple says its threat notifications are high-confidence alerts that a user has been individually targeted by a mercenary-spyware attack. Apple also says investigations can never achieve absolute certainty. Amnesty International’s Security Lab explains that an alert does not necessarily prove the attacker succeeded in implanting spyware; forensic analysis is needed to establish compromise.
An alert is therefore more serious than a generic phone symptom, but it is not a completed forensic verdict. Apple does not publish all of its detection criteria and does not attribute each notification to a specific attacker or region. Conversely, not receiving an alert does not prove that an ordinary malicious app, account takeover, or other security problem is absent. Apple reported that it had notified users in more than 150 countries in total since 2021; that is a cumulative count of countries, not a victim count or prevalence estimate.

What symptoms cannot tell you
- Battery or heat changes: useful for troubleshooting general iPhone problems, but not a spyware test.
- Random crashes or glitches: can result from iOS bugs, failing hardware, or ordinary apps.
- Unknown apps: worth investigating, but a sophisticated zero-click chain may not rely on an app visible on the Home Screen.
- No symptoms: entirely compatible with the documented zero-click cases.
Does an Apple threat notification mean my phone is infected?
No—not by itself. Treat it as high-confidence evidence that Apple believes you were individually targeted. Whether the exploit reached its final stage and whether spyware remained on the phone require device and account examination by a qualified responder. Amnesty’s April 2024 guidance and Apple’s own support guidance both point notified or credibly at-risk people toward expert assistance.

How can I check if an Apple spyware alert is real?
Attackers can imitate security warnings to steal an Apple Account password or verification code. Apple describes several places where a genuine notification appears: the iPhone Lock Screen, Settings, an email, and a banner on the Apple Account page.
- Open a browser yourself and type
account.apple.comrather than following a link in an email, text, or chat. - Sign in and look for the threat-notification banner on the account page. Check the iPhone’s Settings and Lock Screen as well.
- Compare the wording and timing across those Apple-controlled locations. Preserve the message and screenshots if you may need specialist analysis.
- Stop if the message asks you to install an app or configuration profile, click an emailed link, disclose a password, or provide a two-factor verification code. Apple says its threat notification will not request those actions.
A message that exists only in an email or chat, especially one demanding urgent payment or credentials, should be treated as phishing until verified through Apple’s account page.

What to do after a genuine alert or credible targeting concern
Use a layered response. The order below protects the account and device while preserving the option of useful forensic work.
- Record what happened. Note the time, wording, devices shown, and any related messages. Keep originals rather than forwarding them through services that may alter metadata.
- Update iOS and Apple software. Install the latest updates offered for the device. Patches are especially important because documented exploit chains have been tied to specific iOS releases; the 2026 Citizen Lab case said its iMessage exploit was patched by iOS 18.4.1.
- Secure the Apple Account. Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication. Review trusted devices and account details from Apple’s own settings, removing anything you do not recognize.
- Strengthen device access. Use a passcode or biometrics and enable Stolen Device Protection when available on the iPhone. These controls reduce the damage from physical theft or account changes, even though they are not a scan for spyware.
- Install apps only from the App Store. Avoid configuration profiles, enterprise certificates, or software offered through unsolicited messages. Do not open links or attachments from unknown senders.
- Seek specialist help. Apple recommends expert assistance for people who receive a threat notification. Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline and specialist organizations such as Amnesty’s Security Lab or Citizen Lab may be able to advise eligible people, depending on their location and circumstances.
- Follow the responder’s preservation advice. Do not automatically erase, restore, or replace the phone before consultation if you want evidence. A reset can change or remove artifacts that a forensic examiner might need; the right action depends on the threat, safety situation, and investigative goal.
Should you turn on Lockdown Mode?
Lockdown Mode is intended for the small number of people with a credible reason to expect highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. Apple says it reduces attack surface by limiting selected functions involving messages, web browsing, service requests, wired connections, and configuration profiles. Because those limits change how some features work, the mode is not a general recommendation for every iPhone owner.
Lockdown Mode is a preventive exposure-reduction measure, not a forensic scanner. It cannot prove that a phone is clean, remove an existing implant, or guarantee immunity. Apple’s launch description from July 6, 2022 reflects the behavior and categories documented at that time; check Apple’s current guidance for the exact restrictions on your iOS release before enabling it.
Best Value
User clues versus forensic evidence
| Information source | What it can establish | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Battery drain, heat, crashes, or slow performance | That the iPhone may need ordinary troubleshooting | That spyware is present or absent |
| Apple threat notification | Apple has a high-confidence indication of individual targeting | That implantation succeeded or which attacker was responsible |
| Account-page, Settings, and Lock Screen verification | That an alert is being presented through Apple-controlled channels | That the device has been forensically cleared |
| Specialist forensic examination | Potential compromise indicators in device and service artifacts | A universal guarantee that no future exploit can occur |
Forensic work can involve interpreting logs and other artifacts that are not exposed in normal iPhone menus. That is why a specialist should guide evidence preservation and any decision to reset the device. Consumer “spyware scanner” claims, generic privacy accessories, and a symptom list cannot substitute for that analysis.
How to reduce the chance of a future infection
- Install iOS and security updates promptly, including updates for Apple services.
- Keep a strong, unique Apple Account password and two-factor authentication enabled.
- Use a passcode or biometrics and turn on Stolen Device Protection.
- Use App Store software and reject unsolicited profiles or enterprise-app installations.
- Treat unexpected links, attachments, invitations, and service requests as potentially hostile.
- Consider Lockdown Mode when your work, public profile, or personal circumstances create a credible risk of mercenary spyware; accept that some normal features will be limited.
Apple characterizes mercenary-spyware attacks as costing millions of dollars, but that statement is a general description, not an independently measured average cost or a reason to buy a particular product. Apple also announced a $10 million grant in 2022 to support civil-society research and advocacy; it is historical context, not a consumer protection plan or expense.
When to treat the situation as urgent
Prioritize expert contact if Apple displays a verified notification, if you work on sensitive political or human-rights issues, if a credible source says you were selected for targeting, or if several independent account and device anomalies appear together. A normal-looking phone does not lower the significance of a verified alert. Conversely, one battery or performance change without a notification is not enough to diagnose mercenary spyware.
The practical distinction is simple: symptoms are weak clues, an Apple alert is a strong targeting signal, and forensic analysis is the route to a reasoned conclusion about compromise. Verify first, patch and secure the account, preserve evidence when appropriate, and involve specialists rather than relying on a reset or a consumer scan.
