How do iPads help students who use AAC?
AAC means augmentative and alternative communication: tools and methods that support or provide a way to communicate. According to 9to5Mac’s October 5, 2026 report on the film, some students at the school use iPads with AAC software to communicate with teachers and classmates. The report does not name the software, the iPad generation, or how the school acquired or manages the devices.

Founding principal Cathi Davis told 9to5Mac: “All learners, including learners with advanced reading and language skills, or our learners at the start of our communication or language journey, show high levels of engagement when they can use the AAC tool to generate, expand or express ideas through AAC.” Davis added: “It is truly the epitome of what we mean when we say ‘universal design,’ and it is very much a tool for all as compared to almost every other attempt we make at tools for language, communication and vocabulary in the classroom.” These are Davis’s descriptions of classroom experience, not independently measured findings or a claim that every learner will benefit in the same way.

The school’s reported experience suggests AAC tools can also give other students a way to generate, expand or express ideas. That is a context-specific observation, not proof of a universal effect.

Which iPad accessibility features are relevant?
Apple’s Reaching all learners with iPad guide describes features including Live Speech, Assistive Access, Spoken Content, VoiceOver, Switch Control and Guided Access. These are broader examples of iPad accessibility tools; the film coverage does not establish that Ruby Bridges Elementary uses any particular built-in feature. Availability and behavior can depend on iPad model, software version and language, so check Apple’s current requirements before selecting a setup.
For a school considering a device for AAC, begin with the learner and the communication app rather than a model ranking. Confirm that the app supports the required operating system and language, and determine whether the learner will use touch, voice or an external switch. Then account for accessibility settings, device management and privacy rules, durability, support and total cost. The cited guide offers feature context, not a procurement recommendation.

According to 9to5Mac, the documentary’s website includes video resources for schools interested in the example. Apple also describes workshops and continuing educator support through ConnectED; that program description does not establish that the same support is available to every school. Neither resource, by itself, demonstrates that another school can reproduce Ruby Bridges Elementary’s approach or outcomes.
