But none has a uniform or automatic effect on share prices: a railroad’s debt structure, fuel-surcharge timing, traffic mix, pricing, and productivity all shape the result. The 2025 annual filings discussed here show how to examine those company-level channels; they do not establish a current sector forecast or predict stock-price moves.
How do interest rates affect railroad stocks?
Interest rates can affect railroad companies directly through borrowing costs and indirectly through how investors value future cash flows. Those are different channels. A company’s filings can help assess its financing exposure, but they do not prove that every change in market rates immediately changes its expenses or its share price.

Borrowing costs depend on the debt a railroad actually has
Higher market rates can raise the cost of new borrowing and refinancing, and can affect floating-rate obligations. Existing fixed-rate debt generally does not reset just because market rates change; the potential cost change may come later, when the debt matures and is refinanced. The timing and size of any effect therefore depend on the company’s debt balance, interest-rate terms, maturity schedule, and financing choices.
Start with the annual filing’s debt notes and contractual-obligations disclosures. Look for total debt, fixed-rate notes, floating-rate exposure if disclosed, maturities, scheduled interest payments, and reported interest expense. Then compare interest costs with cash generated from operations rather than treating the debt total alone as a measure of risk. If a filing does not identify floating-rate exposure, do not infer its amount from the company’s total debt.

Company disclosures illustrate why the details matter. Union Pacific reported 2025 interest expense up 3% and weighted-average debt of $32.1 billion, compared with $31.6 billion in 2024. CSX disclosed $13.9 billion in future interest payments as of December 31, 2025, including $831 million payable in 2026. CSX also reports fixed-rate notes and future payments. These figures describe different companies and filing measures; they are not directly comparable estimates of sensitivity to a particular rate change.
Investor valuation is a separate, less quantifiable channel
Investors may value expected future cash flows differently as market rates change. That can influence a stock even if the railroad’s current interest bill has not changed. The cited company filings do not quantify this relationship or establish a consistent direction or size of railroad-share response. A rate move, on its own, is not a reliable signal that railroad stocks must rise or fall.
For an investor, a practical review is to track debt and maturity disclosures alongside reported interest expense and cash generation over successive filings. Ask whether debt is fixed or floating where the company says, when significant amounts come due, and whether operating cash can support scheduled payments and investment needs. Treat the answers as inputs to an earnings assessment—not as a share-price forecast.
Do higher fuel prices help or hurt railroad companies?
Fuel is a major operating input, but the effect of fuel prices on profitability is not simply “higher prices are bad” or “lower prices are good.” Railroads may recover some fuel costs through customer surcharges. Fuel expense and surcharge revenue can change at different times or by different amounts, so the relevant question is the net operating effect over the period—not the direction of fuel prices alone.

Fuel surcharges can offset costs, but not necessarily in the same period
BNSF says freight revenue includes revenue from transportation services and fuel surcharges. It also cautions that, when fuel prices are volatile or customer business mix changes, fuel expense and fuel-surcharge changes may differ significantly. Surcharge formulas, customer arrangements, timing, and the mix of traffic influence how closely surcharge revenue tracks fuel expense.
That timing mismatch matters when reading quarterly or annual results. A drop in fuel expense may arrive before or after a corresponding reduction in surcharge revenue. A company can therefore report lower fuel costs without an equivalent improvement in operating profit. Conversely, surcharge revenue might not fully offset a rapid increase in costs during the same reporting period. The filing evidence supports this mechanism, not a claim that surcharges always provide full or immediate recovery.
Efficiency and company-specific results change the calculation
BNSF reported that its fuel expense declined $256 million, or 7.8%, in 2025, primarily because of lower average fuel prices and improved fuel efficiency. This is a company-specific result for that year, not a sector-wide estimate or a forecast. It also shows why analysts should distinguish fuel-price effects from operational efficiency rather than assigning the entire change to commodity prices.

When reviewing a railroad’s results, place fuel expense and any fuel-surcharge disclosure beside operating performance and management’s explanation of efficiency or mix. Avoid treating fuel expense reductions as savings of the same amount to earnings unless the company’s reported results support that conclusion.
How does freight demand affect railroad stocks?
Freight demand affects the amount of traffic a railroad carries, but traffic volume is only one input to revenue and earnings. Carloads count loaded rail units, while revenue ton-miles measure weight moved over distance. Freight revenue also reflects prices, commodities, customers, and the mix of services. More traffic can support revenue, but it does not guarantee proportionally higher profit.
Read volume and revenue measures together
CPKC’s 2025 filing provides an example of how activity and revenue measures can be read side by side. It reported the following results for 2025 and 2024:
Recommended Free Tools
| Measure | 2025 | 2024 | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carloads | 4,514 thousand | 4,370 thousand | Number of rail units carried, as reported by CPKC |
| Revenue ton-miles | 219,420 million | 211,458 million | Weight carried multiplied by distance, as reported by CPKC |
| Freight revenue | $14.776 billion | $14.223 billion | Reported freight revenue, reflecting more than traffic volume alone |
The figures show that CPKC reported increases in each of these measures between 2024 and 2025. They illustrate company-reported activity and revenue; they do not establish an industry-wide demand trend, explain the contribution of pricing or mix on their own, or predict future results.

For a more complete view, compare carloads and revenue ton-miles with freight revenue and revenue per unit or ton-mile when the company reports those measures. A divergence can be informative: revenue may change differently from physical activity because rates, distance, commodity mix, or customer mix changed. The filing’s explanations are needed to interpret the pattern.
Different traffic segments can point in different directions
BNSF’s 2025 reporting shows why a railroad’s total volume can conceal unlike conditions across its business. Consumer-products volume increased 1.2% while average revenue per car or unit declined. Industrial-products volume declined 4.6%, while agricultural and energy volumes increased 1.6%. The company described different market and commodity factors behind these movements. These segment outcomes should not be compressed into a single statement that freight demand was either broadly strong or broadly weak.
Commodity exposure and geography matter when comparing companies. A railroad with a different route network, customer base, or traffic mix may not experience the same changes as another carrier. Company filings are not interchangeable: definitions and reporting categories can vary, as can the economic conditions affecting each network.

Why more freight does not automatically mean more earnings
Each additional shipment brings revenue, but also has an associated cost and may earn a different rate. Fuel, labor, equipment, network capacity, and other operating expenses affect how much of the revenue reaches operating income. Productivity can help a railroad handle traffic more efficiently, while congestion or a costly traffic mix can weaken the benefit of higher volume.
Best Value
BNSF’s 2025 results illustrate the difficulty of attributing operating performance to demand alone. The company reported railroad operating expenses down 3.7% and an operating ratio improvement of 2.5 percentage points to 65.5%. Its reporting also described different volume trends by segment. Because productivity and other expense changes contributed to the operating results, those figures cannot be assigned to freight demand alone.
The operating ratio is operating expenses as a share of operating revenue; a lower ratio generally means a smaller share of revenue was used for operating expenses. It is useful alongside revenue and traffic data, not as a standalone measure of demand. To interpret a change, look at the company’s explanation of expenses, pricing, traffic mix, fuel, and productivity in the same period.
A practical framework for analyzing railroad stocks
Use the same set of questions for each company, but keep company-specific disclosures and definitions intact. A filing-based review can clarify how the three factors enter expected earnings; it cannot substitute for current market data or establish a stock-price target.

In the debt and contractual-obligations notes, record debt balances, fixed-rate terms, floating-rate exposure if disclosed, maturity dates, scheduled interest payments, and interest expense. Consider the timing of refinancing and the company’s cash generation; do not assume all debt reprices at once.
- Separate fuel expense from fuel recovery. Find reported fuel costs, fuel-surcharge disclosures, and management’s comments on fuel efficiency, volatile prices, or changing customer mix. Account for timing differences before judging whether a fuel-price change improved margins.
- Measure traffic from more than one angle. Compare carloads with revenue ton-miles and, where reported, freight revenue and revenue per unit or ton-mile. Review segment-level trends to see whether a total masks opposing commodity or customer patterns.
- Test the earnings conversion. Compare revenue and traffic with operating expenses, productivity discussion, and operating ratio. This helps distinguish growth in shipments from growth in operating performance.
- Keep the period and company in view. Separate historical reported results from forward-looking expectations. Differences in geography, commodity exposure, and accounting definitions limit direct comparisons across carriers.
What the 2025 filings can—and cannot—tell investors
The examples here come primarily from 2025 annual filings retrieved in 2026: BNSF, CPKC, Union Pacific, and CSX. They establish reported company facts and explain operating or financing channels. They do not establish current interest-rate levels, current forward freight demand, a complete comparison of railroad stocks, or a causal estimate of how a particular market move will affect share prices.
For a decision about current conditions, use the latest available filings and market data, and distinguish results already reported from management outlooks and investor expectations. A company’s annual figures can explain what happened during its reporting year; they cannot, by themselves, tell a reader what its next year’s traffic, fuel recovery, borrowing costs, or stock performance will be.
