If Australian rates are expected to stay higher relative to US rates, Australian assets can become more attractive, which may support the Australian dollar and push AUD/USD higher. If US rates are expected to rise relative to Australian rates, demand for US assets can support the US dollar and push AUD/USD lower, all else equal.
That is a framework, not a guaranteed reaction. Foreign-exchange markets respond to surprises in the expected policy path, not simply to whether the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) or Federal Reserve changes its current rate. Commodity prices, trade, risk appetite, inflation and broad US-dollar demand can reinforce or overwhelm the interest-rate effect.

First, read the AUD/USD quote correctly
AUD/USD is the number of US dollars exchanged for one Australian dollar. A rise in the quote means the Australian dollar has appreciated against the US dollar. A fall means the Australian dollar has depreciated against the US dollar.
- AUD/USD rises: one Australian dollar buys more US dollars.
- AUD/USD falls: one Australian dollar buys fewer US dollars.
This direction matters when interpreting a central-bank announcement. A move lower after an RBA decision means the Australian dollar weakened against the US dollar, even if the RBA left its policy rate unchanged.

The core mechanism: relative interest-rate expectations
The relevant comparison is not the RBA rate in isolation. Investors compare the expected return on Australian assets with the expected return on US and other major-market assets. The RBA says the interest-rate differential is a key driver of exchange rates and capital flows.
When Australian expected rates rise relative to US rates
Higher expected Australian rates can increase the appeal of Australian bonds, deposits and other interest-bearing assets. Overseas investors may need to buy Australian dollars to purchase those assets. Australian investors may also have less incentive to send funds abroad. Both channels can increase demand for AUD or reduce its supply in foreign-exchange markets, supporting AUD/USD, all else equal.
When US expected rates rise relative to Australian rates
If markets expect US rates to be higher for longer, US assets may offer a better relative return. Investors buying those assets generally need US dollars, while Australian investors may send more capital overseas. That combination can support the USD and put downward pressure on AUD/USD, all else equal.

If expected Australian and US rates fall by similar amounts, the relative differential may change little. The two central banks can both ease policy without creating a large interest-rate reason for portfolios to move from one currency to the other. Other factors may then determine the exchange-rate response.
| Change in expected policy path | Likely relative-return effect | Potential AUD/USD tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Australian expected rates rise relative to US expected rates | Australian assets become relatively more attractive | Upward pressure, all else equal |
| US expected rates rise relative to Australian expected rates | US assets become relatively more attractive | Downward pressure, all else equal |
| Both expected paths shift similarly | Relative incentive changes little | Interest-rate channel may be limited |
Why the expected future path matters more than today’s rate
Bond yields and yield curves incorporate expectations about future policy, inflation and economic activity. As a result, the currency can react strongly when a central bank changes its communication even though the current policy rate does not change.
A hold can be hawkish or dovish
Suppose markets expect the RBA to hold rates. If its statement signals that inflation may require restrictive policy for longer, expected Australian rates can rise relative to US expectations and AUD/USD may strengthen. Conversely, a hold accompanied by a clear signal that cuts are approaching can lower expected Australian returns and weaken AUD/USD.

A hike can still weaken the Australian dollar
An RBA increase is not automatically positive for AUD. If investors had expected an even larger increase, or if the accompanying guidance points to rapid future cuts, the total message may be more dovish than priced. AUD/USD can fall because the expected path changed in the opposite direction from the headline move.
The same logic applies to Federal Reserve decisions. A Fed hike that was fully anticipated may have little immediate effect, while a smaller-than-expected hike or unexpectedly hawkish guidance can lift the US dollar and lower AUD/USD.
Surprises drive the immediate announcement reaction
Foreign-exchange markets are forward-looking. Information already reflected in prices usually produces a smaller move than information that changes expectations. The RBA’s analysis of economic releases defines a surprise as the difference between the actual result and what markets expected. Rate decisions, inflation data and employment reports can all alter the anticipated policy path before a formal rate change.
How to separate the decision from the surprise
- Identify the decision that was priced. Compare the announced rate and guidance with market expectations immediately before the release.
- Read the communication. Look for changes in language about inflation, employment, growth, risks and the likely duration of restrictive or accommodative policy.
- Check market pricing after the release. Bond yields and interest-rate futures show whether expected policy shifted relative to the other country.
- Check AUD/USD against the timing. A move that begins before the announcement may reflect earlier data or positioning; a move immediately after the statement is more consistent with a new information shock, though not proof of causality.
What historical research can—and cannot—tell you
A 2017 Federal Reserve study estimated that, historically, a 100-basis-point surprise increase in US monetary-policy expectations was followed by approximately 2.5% to 5% appreciation in the US dollar against most currencies. The estimate varies by currency, the measure of policy expectations and the period studied. It is a historical conditional estimate, not a rule, a current forecast or a guaranteed AUD/USD response.
Comparing an RBA decision with a Federal Reserve decision
Because AUD/USD contains two currencies, the most useful analysis compares the two central banks on the same axes.

| Question | Why it matters for AUD/USD |
|---|---|
| Which expected policy path changed more? | The larger relative shift can dominate the direction of the interest-rate differential. |
| How large was the surprise? | A larger difference between the announcement and market pricing generally creates a larger potential repricing. |
| Did bond yields move relative to each other? | Relative yield changes show whether expected returns actually shifted, rather than relying on the policy-rate headline. |
| What happened to commodities, trade and risk appetite? | These forces can reinforce or overwhelm the rate differential. |
| What time horizon is being explained? | Announcement reactions and longer-term exchange-rate trends can have different drivers. |
For example, the RBA could sound more restrictive while the Fed becomes even more restrictive. AUD/USD might still fall if the US expected path rises by more. Looking only at the RBA’s statement would miss the relative comparison.

Other forces that can overpower the rate effect
The RBA identifies several additional exchange-rate drivers. Their influence changes over time, so a currency move after a policy announcement cannot be assigned automatically to interest rates.
Terms of trade and commodity prices
Australia’s terms of trade and commodity prices affect export income and the perceived strength of the Australian economy. A large commodity-price move can support or weaken AUD/USD even when the rate differential points the other way. The RBA’s 2021 review notes that the historical relationship between the terms of trade and the exchange rate has varied, partly because investor attention changes.
International trade and capital flows
Export receipts, import payments and cross-border investment create buying and selling pressure for both currencies. Interest-rate changes can alter these flows, but trade conditions can also move independently of monetary policy.
Global risk sentiment
During a global risk shock, investors may reduce exposure to risk-sensitive assets and seek liquid or defensive holdings. That broad repositioning can dominate the Australian-US interest differential for a period.
Inflation and economic data
Inflation, employment, growth and other releases change expectations for both central banks. A release that appears unrelated to currencies can move AUD/USD if it changes the expected policy gap.
Speculation and positioning
Leveraged investors and short-term traders can amplify an initial move or reverse it as positions are closed. A sharp announcement-day move therefore does not establish that the long-term exchange-rate trend has changed.

Central banks influence exchange rates without targeting AUD/USD
Neither the RBA nor the Federal Reserve is required to target a particular AUD/USD level. Australia has a floating exchange rate, and the RBA treats the exchange rate as one part of monetary-policy transmission. The Federal Reserve explains that the dollar’s value is determined in foreign-exchange markets and that neither the US Treasury nor the Fed targets a specific exchange-rate level. The Fed still considers dollar movements because they affect US activity, prices and the transmission of monetary policy.
“The value of the dollar is determined in foreign exchange markets, and neither the U.S. Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a level for the exchange rate.”
Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, FAQ, updated July 11, 2024
This distinction prevents a common mistake: interpreting a policy decision as an attempt to push AUD/USD to a chosen number. Central banks set policy primarily for their domestic mandates; exchange-rate effects are an important consequence, not necessarily a target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to analyze a real AUD/USD rate announcement
- Write down the quote direction. Decide whether AUD/USD rose or fell, rather than describing the move vaguely as “the dollar strengthened.”
- Record both policy decisions. Note the RBA and Fed decisions, their statements and any relevant speeches or guidance.
- Measure the surprise. Compare each outcome with the market consensus that existed immediately before publication.
- Compare expected paths. Determine whether Australian expected rates moved more or less than US expected rates.
- Check yield-market confirmation. Look for a relative move in Australian and US government-bond yields or policy expectations.
- Review simultaneous news. Check commodity prices, trade news, inflation, employment, equity-market stress and broad US-dollar moves.
- Separate horizons. Describe the immediate repricing separately from a multi-week or multi-month trend.
- State the conclusion conditionally. Use “can support,” “tends to” and “all else equal,” unless the evidence establishes a stronger relationship.
Common interpretation errors
- “The RBA raised rates, so AUD/USD must rise.” The increase may have been expected, or the future guidance may have been dovish.
- “The Fed raised rates, so AUD/USD must fall by a fixed amount.” The response depends on the surprise and on what happened to Australian expectations at the same time.
- “The current policy-rate gap is the whole story.” Markets price future rates, inflation, growth and risk, not only today’s settings.
- “A one-day move proves causation.” Commodity prices, risk sentiment and other releases may have moved simultaneously.
- “A historical percentage is a trading rule.” The Federal Reserve’s 2.5%–5% estimate describes a historical sample and does not forecast a specific AUD/USD move.
- “The central bank wants a particular exchange-rate level.” Both institutions recognize exchange-rate effects without targeting a fixed AUD/USD number.
What the rate relationship means for different time horizons
Minutes to days
The first reaction is usually dominated by the surprise in the statement, decision and immediate market pricing. Liquidity, positioning and concurrent data can make the move unusually large or short-lived.

Investors reassess the expected policy paths as new inflation, employment, growth and commodity information arrives. The relative yield curve and capital-flow outlook become more important than a single announcement.
Best Value
Longer term
The exchange rate reflects a changing mix of monetary policy, productivity and growth prospects, trade and commodity conditions, global risk appetite and portfolio allocation. The RBA distinguishes these shorter- and longer-term drivers rather than assigning a permanent weight to interest rates.
Practical takeaway
Start with the relative expected path: did Australian returns become more attractive compared with US returns, or did the opposite occur? Then ask how surprising the information was, whether bond markets confirmed the change, and what commodities, trade and risk sentiment were doing. That process gives a defensible explanation for an AUD/USD move without treating any central-bank decision as a one-step prediction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher RBA interest rate always make AUD/USD rise?
No. AUD/USD can fall if the increase was already priced, if the RBA’s forward guidance is more dovish than expected, or if US rates, risk sentiment, commodity prices or other forces move more strongly in the opposite direction.

Why can AUD/USD fall when both the RBA and Federal Reserve cut rates?
If both expected paths shift by similar amounts, the relative interest-rate incentive may change little. AUD/USD can then be driven by the size of each surprise, commodity prices, trade conditions, risk appetite or broad US-dollar demand.
What does a 100-basis-point surprise mean for AUD/USD?
A 100-basis-point surprise is an unexpected one-percentage-point change in monetary-policy expectations. Federal Reserve research from 2017 associated such a US surprise historically with 2.5%–5% dollar appreciation against most currencies, but that estimate is not an AUD/USD rule or forecast.
Do the RBA or Federal Reserve target the AUD/USD exchange rate?
No. Australia operates with a floating exchange rate, and the Federal Reserve says the dollar’s value is determined in foreign-exchange markets rather than targeting a particular level. Both institutions still consider exchange-rate effects in monetary-policy transmission.
