They combine active material with a binder, conductive additives and a solvent or other liquid to make a cathode or anode slurry. The mixer does not make a finished battery cell, and there is no single mixer design or recipe suited to every chemistry and production line.
In a factory, mixing is one part of a connected process that can include material transfer, recipe-based weighing, pre-mixing, main mixing, slurry storage and delivery to a coater. The right equipment depends on the formulation, the material behavior, whether the process is wet or dry, and the required production scale.

What does an industrial mixer do in battery manufacturing?
An industrial mixer combines electrode ingredients into a material that can be processed downstream. In a wet electrode process, that material is generally a slurry: active material, binder and conductive additive are dispersed in a solvent or another liquid. Cathode and anode formulations differ, and the ingredients described by equipment suppliers are examples, not a universal battery recipe.
The active material supplies the electrode’s electrochemical function. A binder helps hold the electrode materials together, while conductive additives support electrical pathways through the mixture. The liquid enables the ingredients to be processed as a slurry for coating. The mixer’s task is to combine and disperse those components to the requirements of the particular process; it does not determine a single formulation that applies to every cell.

Kanematsu KGK describes positive-electrode examples that include lithium compounds such as LiCoO2 or LiFePO4, carbon black, and PVDF binder. Its negative-electrode example includes graphite. The company also notes that high-viscosity materials call for specialized equipment and techniques. These examples illustrate why the process must be matched to the materials rather than selected by a generic “battery mixer” label.
Where mixing fits in the electrode-production line
Mixing is not an isolated machine operation. Jeil M&S describes an automated sequence in which materials are transferred and stored, weighed to a recipe, pre-mixed, combined in a main mixing step, held in slurry storage and then supplied to the coater. Each step has a distinct role: weighing establishes the intended proportions, pre-mixing handles materials that may take time to incorporate, and main mixing forms the slurry for the next operation.
- Transfer and storage: Raw materials are brought into the production line and held for use.
- Recipe-based weighing: Ingredients are measured according to the formulation selected for the process.
- Pre-mixing: Materials such as binders or conductive agents may be mixed ahead of the main slurry-forming step.
- Main mixing: The active materials and other ingredients are combined into the intended slurry.
- Slurry buffering and coater supply: The mixed material is stored or buffered and delivered to the coating operation.
This sequence helps explain why choosing a mixer is only one part of equipment planning. A production line also needs a way to dose and transfer the ingredients and to move the prepared slurry to the coater. Jeil M&S describes an automated line, but the exact equipment arrangement and degree of automation can vary by installation.

How batch and continuous mixing differ
Industrial battery slurry processes can use batch or continuous mixing. A batch process prepares a defined quantity in a mixing cycle; a continuous process feeds material through an ongoing operation. The available manufacturer descriptions do not establish a universal winner. The useful comparison is how each approach fits the intended throughput, formulation, line layout, process control and cleaning or recipe-changeover needs.

What mixer mechanisms are used?
Manufacturer materials describe planetary-style, conical, rotor-stator and twin-screw equipment in battery-related applications. These designs should not be treated as interchangeable. The required action may include kneading, dispersing, powder induction or degassing, and the recipe and material behavior determine which actions are needed.
Twin-screw mixing
Bühler describes continuous twin-screw electrode-slurry production. Its process combines dosing, pre-mixing, kneading, fine dispersion and degassing in one device. That integration is a supplier’s description of its process, not an independent finding that every twin-screw line delivers the same outcome or is suitable for every formulation.

Planetary-style and conical mixers are among the equipment types identified in the manufacturer materials. The available descriptions do not establish a universal performance ranking or supply comparable figures for capacity, shear, energy use or cleaning time. A plant assessing either type needs to check whether the configuration suits its ingredients and required mixing actions.

Rotor-stator equipment
Rotor-stator equipment is also identified in battery-related applications. It represents a different mixing mechanism from twin-screw or planetary-style processing, so its presence in a supplier’s application list is not evidence that it can substitute directly for those systems in any given process.
Wet slurry, dry and semi-dry electrode preparation
Wet slurry production is not the only process described for electrode preparation. MIXACO identifies dry and semi-dry electrode processes, while Ystral lists both slurry production and precursors for dry coating. These examples show that mixer applications can extend beyond conventional wet-slurry preparation; they do not establish that every mixer type can perform every dry or semi-dry operation.
The process distinction matters when evaluating equipment. In wet preparation, the cited sources describe combining electrode ingredients with solvents or other liquids to form slurry. For dry or semi-dry preparation, the cited material identifies applications but does not provide enough detail to prescribe a particular recipe, operating method or equipment setup. A manufacturer’s application example should therefore be checked against the specific process and materials being considered.

Why mixing quality matters
Electrode slurry needs suitable uniformity and dispersion for the process that follows. Kanematsu KGK warns that insufficient mixing uniformity can cause localized segregation and may affect capacity and degradation. The source does not provide a quantitative effect size or a universal threshold for acceptable uniformity, so those outcomes should not be turned into a numerical rule applicable to every battery line.

For a production team, the practical implication is to evaluate the mixer as part of process control, not just as a vessel or machine with a stated capacity. Questions to resolve include whether ingredients are dosed consistently, whether the required materials are dispersed, and how the line monitors and records the process. Bühler describes inline monitoring and raw-material traceability through its QuaLiB system. That is a company-described capability; the cited materials do not establish a common monitoring standard across the industry.
- Confirm that the equipment is intended for the actual formulation and mixing actions required.
- Consider how dosing, powder and liquid handling connect to the mixing step.
- Check how material is stored and delivered to the coater after mixing.
- Evaluate process monitoring and traceability needs for the installation.
- Establish how cleaning and recipe changes will be handled in the planned line.
How to assess a mixer for a battery production line
Because the sources describe multiple technologies and processes without a controlled comparison, equipment selection is best approached as a process-fit decision. A machine’s nominal type alone does not show whether it will suit a particular recipe, line design or scale.
- Define the electrode process. Establish whether the operation is wet slurry, dry or semi-dry preparation, or another process described for the planned electrode.
- Map the material sequence. Identify which ingredients require recipe weighing, pre-mixing, main mixing, storage and coater supply.
- Identify the mixing actions required. Determine whether the process needs kneading, fine dispersion, powder induction or degassing, rather than assuming that all mixer designs provide equivalent action.
- Choose the production arrangement to evaluate. Compare batch and continuous approaches against the intended throughput and line integration; verify cleaning and recipe-changeover requirements for the actual configuration.
- Review controls and evidence. Ask how dosing, monitoring and traceability are handled, and distinguish supplier claims from results demonstrated under conditions relevant to the intended line.
- Check the handoff to coating. Include slurry storage or buffering and delivery in the line design, since mixing is followed by coater supply rather than cell assembly.
What supplier-reported figures do—and do not—show
Bühler’s February 11, 2026 release reports that the company had delivered 113 complete production systems for battery slurries and dry compounds over the preceding 10 years. The same release reports more than 70 lithium-ion electrode slurry production lines delivered in China. These are company-reported delivery counts, not market-wide totals, market share or independent production statistics.
On its process page, Bühler claims that required homogeneity can be reached in less than a minute, compared with hours commonly required for conventional processes. The page’s publication date is not shown in the supplied materials. This is a vendor process claim, not an independently reported comparative test; it should not be generalized to all recipes, machines or operating conditions.
Best Value
In the 2026 release, Bühler’s Head of Market Segment Battery Electrode Compounds, Adrian Spillmann, characterized the delivery milestone as reflecting process development, project execution experience and customer collaboration, rather than volume alone. That statement is the company executive’s characterization of the milestone, not an independent assessment of system performance.
Where mixers also appear in battery recycling
Some manufacturer materials extend mixer applications to recycling. They describe dispersing black mass into liquids or homogenizing processed fractions. These are examples of recycling-related uses, not a claim that an electrode slurry mixer is automatically suitable for black mass or that all mixer designs can handle recycling streams. The material being processed and the operation required remain central to equipment fit.
What the available evidence can establish
The cited descriptions come from manufacturers, suppliers and an industrial integrator. They explain representative ingredients, process stages, equipment approaches and application examples. They do not provide independent equipment tests, a controlled vendor comparison, universal electrode recipes, validated customer outcomes or a quantitative threshold for acceptable mixing uniformity. Performance, scale-up, speed and cost claims should therefore be understood in the context of the company making them, not as industry-wide findings.
