Indian research funding is not one national grant or application. It is a set of distinct programmes: students may receive fellowships, eligible investigators and host institutions may seek project grants, innovators may pursue prototype support, and startups may qualify for research-oriented finance. The right route depends on who is applying, the project’s stage, its discipline, the host or funding channel, and the rules and deadlines in the current call.
How research funding is organized in India
Different schemes pay different recipients for different purposes. A fellowship usually supports an individual’s training or research career. A project grant is awarded for defined research led by an eligible investigator, generally through an eligible institution or research organization. Prototype programmes support the development of an idea into a working product or proof of concept, often through participating centres. Startup-oriented finance may be channelled through a fund manager and may take the form of a loan or, in some cases, equity.

These distinctions matter because a strong research idea alone does not establish eligibility. A student looking for doctoral support, a faculty member seeking project costs, and an incorporated company seeking capital should not assume they can apply to the same programme or use the same budget rules. The administering agency’s scheme and live call set the operative requirements.

|---|---|---|---|
| Fellowship | Eligible student or researcher | Individual doctoral or research support | INSPIRE Fellowship; BIRAC E-YUVA |
| Research grant | Investigator working through an eligible host | Project expenses such as equipment, personnel, or consumables, subject to scheme rules | ANRF research grants |
| Prototype support | Innovator through a participating centre or programme | Building or developing a prototype | NIDHI-PRAYAS and PRAYAS 2.0 |
| Private-sector R&D finance | Eligible enterprise through a second-level fund manager | Research-intensive and higher technology-readiness projects | RDI Fund |
The table is a way to sort the routes, not a ranking or a guarantee that a particular applicant qualifies. Within each route, discipline, appointment, host recognition, project maturity, award term, and current call conditions can change the answer.

Funding for students and early-career researchers
INSPIRE Fellowship for doctoral study
The Department of Science and Technology’s INSPIRE programme includes a fellowship for doctoral study in basic and applied sciences, including engineering and medicine. Its programme and FAQ describe eligibility routes that include certain university-level rank holders; the exact academic route and conditions must be checked against the official INSPIRE FAQ and programme information. The fellowship is generally implemented at a recognized Indian institute, university, or laboratory.
INSPIRE has multiple components, so the word “INSPIRE” by itself does not identify a single award or guarantee eligibility. A prospective applicant should confirm that the relevant component is the doctoral fellowship, that their qualification and academic record match a listed route, and that the proposed host meets the scheme’s requirements. The broader scheme is described by the Department of Science and Technology on its INSPIRE scheme page.
E-YUVA for research linked to bio-innovation
BIRAC’s E-YUVA combines fellowship and research-grant support with mentoring and exposure to bio-incubation. It is an example of a route for people exploring a research idea with an entrepreneurial or translational direction, rather than a general-purpose stipend for every discipline or a universal startup grant. Applicants should examine the programme’s current eligibility, participating institutions, and call notice on the E-YUVA page.

The E-YUVA page displayed a call deadline of 31 October 2026 when reviewed. Deadlines are time-sensitive: check the live notice before preparing or submitting an application, and do not treat that date as a standing annual deadline.
NIDHI-PRAYAS for prototype development
DST’s NIDHI-PRAYAS is focused on prototype development through participating PRAYAS Centres. Its scheme page describes support of up to ₹10 lakh. The separately described PRAYAS 2.0 page gives a ceiling of up to ₹20 lakh. Those are two distinct programme descriptions, not a combined allowance or a general promise that every innovator can receive either amount. Confirm the applicable centre, eligibility, permitted expenses, selection process, and call details on the NIDHI-PRAYAS and PRAYAS 2.0 pages.
For a student or early-career researcher, the practical choice is often between support for pursuing research as an individual and support for moving a research result toward a prototype or venture. A fellowship is not interchangeable with prototype money: the recipient, deliverables, eligible expenses, host or centre, and application process differ.

Research grants for universities and research organizations
ANRF project grants
The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) describes research-grant schemes for investigators at recognized academic institutions, national laboratories, and other eligible research and development organizations. The investigator, appointment status, host’s recognition, co-investigator rules, and any restrictions on simultaneous awards can affect eligibility. Applicants should use the rules for the specific scheme and call rather than assuming that every university or research organization is eligible for every ANRF programme.
ANRF’s research-grant information identifies potential project cost heads including equipment, manpower, consumables, travel, contingency, and institutional overheads. This list does not mean all categories are allowed in every scheme or that the same limits apply across calls. Check the applicable rules for cost ceilings, overhead treatment, eligible and ineligible expenditure, project duration, reporting, and any required institutional approvals on the ANRF research-grants page.
Start-up Research Grant: an early-career example
ANRF’s FAQ describes a Start-up Research Grant for eligible early-career researchers: a one-time award of up to ₹30 lakh, excluding overheads, for two years. It also lists an upper age limit of 42 and specified relaxations, and says the grant may cover equipment, manpower, consumables, travel, and contingency. These conditions describe this particular scheme; they are not standard terms for all ANRF grants. Because the FAQ does not establish a publication date in the information cited here, verify its current conditions and the relevant call before relying on them. See the ANRF FAQ.

For a university-based applicant, the grant amount is only one part of the fit. The investigator must be eligible, the host must satisfy the scheme, the project must match the call, and the proposed budget must map to allowed heads. An institution’s research office or grants office can help check host-level requirements and prepare institutional material, but the scheme’s official notice remains authoritative.

RDI Fund and its financing channel
The RDI Fund is presented as support for private-sector enterprises, startups, and industry working in research-intensive and strategic areas. Its stated focus on higher technology-readiness projects makes it different from doctoral training, a conventional academic project grant, or an early prototype programme. A company should assess whether its sector and technology maturity fit the fund’s purpose before spending time on an application.

The RDI Fund is described as an ANRF special-purpose fund that works through second-level fund managers rather than as a direct student stipend or standard university grant. The described manager types include alternative investment funds, development finance institutions, non-bank financial companies, focused research organizations, BIRAC, and IIT research parks. Its funding-mechanism information describes unsecured long-term loans and says equity may be used in select cases, particularly for startups. This is finance, not necessarily a non-repayable grant; applicants need to understand the terms and process of the relevant manager. Consult the funding mechanism and fund overview.
Best Value
For a startup, the key questions are therefore not just “How much can I get?” but whether the project is within the fund’s sector and maturity focus, which manager handles the relevant route, and whether a loan or possible equity fits the company’s needs. The public overview does not establish one universal application workflow or a single set of terms for every manager.
How to choose a route and prepare
Start by describing the applicant and the work precisely. “Research funding” is too broad to determine eligibility. A doctoral candidate seeking support for study, a principal investigator budgeting an academic project, an innovator building a prototype, and a company advancing a higher-readiness technology are different cases.
- Identify the applicant. Is the intended recipient an individual student, a researcher, an investigator applying through an institution, an innovator applying via a centre, or an enterprise? Do not infer eligibility from the general audience named on a programme page.
- Match the project stage. Separate doctoral research, independent academic work, proof of concept, prototype development, and higher-readiness private-sector R&D. A programme designed for one stage may not support another.
- Check discipline and career-stage conditions. Review field restrictions, degree or academic record requirements, age limits or relaxations, citizenship or residency terms where specified, and appointment conditions. These vary by scheme.
- Confirm the host or channel. Determine whether the scheme requires a recognized university or research organization, a participating PRAYAS Centre or incubator, or an application through a second-level fund manager.
- Map the budget to the instrument. For a research grant, check whether requested equipment, manpower, consumables, travel, contingency, and overheads are allowed under that call. For prototype support, establish what the programme will fund. For startup finance, understand whether the instrument is a loan, possible equity, or another form of support.
- Read the live call and verify timing. Confirm the currently open application window, deadline, forms, required documents, and submission route from the administering body or named intermediary. Older pages and scheme summaries may not show current call status.
- Check institutional and project obligations. Before committing to a host or budget, clarify the investigator’s appointment, institutional approvals, co-investigator requirements, award restrictions, reporting expectations, and any conditions in the call.
For a broad scan of individual opportunities, the Government of India’s ISTI portal maintains a funding-opportunities page for individuals. Treat a directory as a discovery aid: confirm the scheme’s details and application status with the administering programme.

Common mistakes that lead applicants to the wrong scheme
- Treating a published ceiling as an entitlement. “Up to” is a maximum described for a programme, not a guaranteed award or evidence that every eligible applicant receives that amount.
- Confusing an agency with a single funding product. ANRF, INSPIRE, DST NIDHI, and BIRAC material describes different schemes and mechanisms. An agency or programme family can contain routes with distinct rules.
- Assuming all institutions qualify. Host recognition and investigator appointment requirements are scheme-specific. A university’s general status does not prove eligibility for a particular call.
- Using a student fellowship for project costs, or vice versa. Individual support and a project budget serve different purposes and may be administered differently.
- Conflating prototype support with startup finance. A prototype programme delivered through centres is not the same as finance for a more mature private-sector project, and loan or equity terms are not equivalent to a grant.
- Relying on an old deadline or broad scheme summary. Calls open and close; current dates and detailed requirements belong to the applicable notice.
What to compare before applying
When two programmes appear relevant, compare them on the same facts rather than by headline amount alone. Record the applicant type, discipline, career stage, host or intermediary, project stage, funding instrument, duration, maximum support, overhead treatment, eligible cost heads, reporting obligations, and active call dates. If a value is not clearly stated in a current official notice, do not assume it; ask the administering body or intermediary to clarify it before building the proposal budget.
There is no universal best Indian research-funding scheme. A doctoral student’s best-fit question is whether a fellowship’s academic and host criteria match their case. A university investigator must align a project and institutional setup to the grant call. An innovator needs a programme suited to prototype work, while a startup must also examine maturity, sector fit, and financing structure. Selecting by those conditions is more reliable than applying simply because a scheme mentions research.
