A job feed can return HTTP 200 and still be broken for the system that consumes it. Why HTTP 200 is not enough

A feed can silently break while its transport remains healthy. For example, a response may still be valid JSON while a list becomes a dictionary, a required key disappears or is renamed, the number of records drops sharply, or the endpoint returns an error message in a response whose status is still 200. Any consumer expecting the previous shape or volume may fail later—or quietly process incomplete data.

The practical benefit is moving detection closer to the code and workflow that depend on the feed. Instead of relying on someone to notice that downstream results look wrong, a failing check can make a changed input contract visible during a CI run.
Make the expectations explicit
A useful feed check encodes what the consumer actually needs, rather than treating every change as a failure. Define expectations such as:

A heartbeat monitor answers whether a scheduled job checked in. A feed contract check answers whether the returned data has the expected structure and sufficient volume. Those are related reliability signals, but one does not substitute for the other.

These projects illustrate different layers of monitoring, not interchangeable solutions. A heartbeat can tell you a process ran; an uptime check can tell you an endpoint responded; an output assertion can test returned data. Choose based on the failure you need to catch and where that check should run.
Choosing where to put the check
Running contract checks in CI makes a data change visible alongside code changes and can block a build when configured expectations fail. A check on the job host may fit better when the feed is consumed by a scheduled process outside a development workflow. An external monitor can observe availability independently, but ordinary uptime checks alone still do not validate schema or business-relevant record counts.

When comparing tools, look at the signal they validate, execution location, alert or build-failure behavior, self-hosted versus managed operation, control over thresholds, and the maintenance or integration burden. A broader monitoring product may combine heartbeats, runtime alerts, output assertions, and HTTP checks, but confirm that its assertions can express the specific feed expectations you need.
