base31 began as a curated web directory. In the author’s account, it grew into a broader place to find useful browser tools, explore projects and APIs, and publish simple websites. The shift changed more than the number of listings: it added new ways to discover things and new responsibilities around hosting public submissions.
From a list of links to several ways to explore
A directory answers a basic question: what is worth visiting? The project described in the author’s account widened that question. It includes featured and outside sites, public APIs, apps and AI tools, editor’s picks, tool guides, and community publishing.

The live site’s six collections and tag browsing reflect that broader scope. A visitor might arrive with a practical request—“I need an image tool without an API key”—or simply want to “show me something cool.” Those are different discovery needs, so the project combines focused browsing with more open-ended exploration.

Why the directory needed more than categories
Search for a specific need
The author describes search across names, URLs, descriptions, categories, and tags. That gives visitors several routes to a result: they can search for a tool by name, describe what it does, or start with a category or tag.
#1 Best Overall
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
Browse when the destination is unknown
A random-pick option serves a different purpose. It offers a way to encounter a listing without knowing the right query in advance. Search is for narrowing a known need; a random choice is for exploration.
The author also describes hosted browser tools alongside curated links. Examples include an image compressor and resizer, a QR code generator, a password or passphrase generator, a GitHub repository explorer, a disposable email inbox, a domain availability and idea finder, an iframe tester, a website status checker, a daily word game, and screenshot or file-sharing tools. These are examples from the project account, not independent evaluations of each tool.

Keeping content separate from the interface
The author reports building the main application with Next.js and TypeScript, while maintaining curated directory entries in editable JSON rather than embedding them in interface components. The described entry fields include a name, URL, category, tags, description, and optional review dates.

That content model supports several parts of the experience: category browsing, search, individual detail pages, metadata, recommendations, and editor’s picks. It also separates two kinds of work. Updating a listing’s information can happen in the content data without making each entry a special case in the interface.

How the reported architecture divides responsibilities
The author’s architecture sketch distinguishes the main site from a Cloudflare Worker. The application side covers the curated directory, editorial pages, search, site detail pages, tool guides, metadata, and routing for static tools. The Worker is described as handling features such as voting, basic statistics, community publishing, discussion, notification subscriptions, and shared API endpoints.
This is the author’s description of the implementation, not an independent audit of the system. The useful design idea is the separation between a content-led directory and supporting services for interactive or community features.

- Mix an audio, music and voice tracks
- Record single or multiple tracks simultaneously
- Intuitive tools to split, trim, join, and many other editing features
- Loaded with audio effects including EQ, compression, reverb, and more.
- Load an audio file and export to all popular audio formats from studio quality wav to high compression formats
Community publishing turns discovery into hosting
Visitors can submit static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript sites for hosting and public discovery, according to the author’s account and the live site’s FAQ. That makes base31 more than a catalog of destinations: some destinations can be published through the project itself.
Public submissions bring moderation into the product. The author explicitly notes that uploads require moderation, and the publishing model is also described in the live FAQ. A directory can curate what it lists; a service that hosts public contributions must also consider what it accepts and keeps available.
Best Value
- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
Trust and accessibility are part of the product
The author lists responsive layouts, reduced-motion support, keyboard navigation, visible focus, and clear labels for sponsored or referral placements among the project’s design considerations. These details affect how people use the directory and how they interpret its recommendations.
In particular, editor’s picks and paid placements should not be confused. The author describes sponsored links as visibly labeled, while the live site also discloses sponsored or referral placements. Disclosure helps visitors distinguish an editorial selection from a commercial relationship.
What the project’s growth says about scope
The author’s account is not a case for making every directory into a platform. It shows how the needs of one project expanded: links called for better discovery; browser tools added interactive destinations; and community publishing introduced hosting and moderation. Each addition changes what the project must maintain.
The base31 author puts the incremental approach this way: “Building base31 has been a good reminder that a project can grow without needing to become huge or complicated overnight.”
For a reader planning a similar project, the practical lesson is to let the content model and discovery needs lead. A curated list can remain focused, while search, tools, and publishing can be added when they solve clear problems—and when the project is ready for the responsibilities that come with them.
