“He forgets what weight he lifted last time.” That was the simple problem behind Gym Log Buddy, a small workout logger Shubham Nayak built for a friend. It turns informal notes into structured lift records, but asks the user to check the result before saving it. The project’s useful lesson is not that AI can coach strength training: it is how a local language model can reduce logging friction while ordinary code handles predictable calculations—and why confirmation and careful limits still matter.
From a casual note to a workout history
Instead of filling in a series of fields, a user can type something like “bench 60kg 8 reps 3 sets, incline db 22 x 10 x 3, squat 80 5×5.” Gym Log Buddy uses Gemma 3 through Ollama to identify exercises, weights, repetitions, and sets. The project offers both a command-line interface and a Streamlit interface.

Parsing is only the first step. The application displays the extracted workout so the person logging can review and correct it. Once confirmed, the entry is stored in SQLite, where the history can show the previous session and a suggested next target. The model interprets flexible language; Python rules calculate the suggestion.
What happens after a logged set
The application’s reported progression rule is straightforward: if the previous workout reached at least 10 reps, it suggests adding 2.5 kg and aiming for 8 reps. Otherwise, it keeps the weight and suggests one additional rep.

That is a rule chosen for this project, not a universal training prescription. The account does not establish that it fits every exercise, program, lifter, or health condition. Its separation from the model is nevertheless a useful design choice: a repeatable calculation can be handled by explicit code rather than left to a language model’s interpretation.
Where the parser went wrong
Informal notes are convenient precisely because they leave room for interpretation. Nayak describes errors that could produce records that look plausible unless the user checks them.

- Unmarked weight units: The note
bench 60 8x3was initially interpreted as 60 pounds and converted to 27.2 kg. Nayak changed the prompt behavior so kilograms are the default and pound conversion happens only when the note explicitly says pounds. - Commentary mistaken for an exercise: “did legs today, felt good” prompted the model to invent a squat with empty values. The project added a prompt rule for non-workout commentary and validation to remove records without a weight, reps, or sets.
- Repetitions that vary by set: A note such as
8,8,6cannot be represented accurately by a schema that stores just one repetition value per exercise. Nayak retained that limitation, making user review particularly important.
These are not just formatting quirks. A wrong unit changes the meaning of a lift, an invented exercise corrupts the log, and a single-rep field loses detail. The confirmation screen is the safeguard that leaves the final decision with the person who knows what they did. As Nayak put it, “The AI can suggest. The user confirms.”

What the project’s evaluation does—and does not—show
Nayak reports 15 correct results out of 18 held-out inputs, or 83.3%, after removing prompt examples and rules that had leaked benchmark inputs. An earlier 18/18 result was excluded because the prompt had been developed around those same inputs. That correction matters: a perfect score on examples that shaped the prompt is not independent evidence of performance on unseen notes.

The 15/18 figure is a small, project-specific evaluation reported by the author, not a general accuracy rate for Gemma 3, workout parsers, or AI systems. The article page displays “Oct 4” but does not show a publication year, so the result should not be assigned a year based on that page alone. Nayak also reports 36 live model inferences and 20 automated pytest tests, distinguishing mocked parser tests from live checks of the local model.
Observed timing on one laptop
On a laptop with Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics, 16 GB of RAM, Windows 11, and no dedicated GPU, Nayak observed about 17.9 seconds for first-run inference and around 9.5 seconds on repeated runs. These were practical observations on that setup, not controlled hardware benchmarks or a comparison with hosted services.

What “local” means for this logger
Inference runs locally through Ollama, so the project does not require a cloud AI endpoint to parse a note or incur a per-request API charge for that parsing. That describes where inference happens; it does not guarantee that every copy of the workout database stays on the device.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Nayak notes that the project directory was inside OneDrive, meaning the SQLite database could be synchronized. For local-only retention, the author recommends putting the project and database outside cloud-synchronized folders. This is a practical storage caveat, not a general claim about any provider’s settings or privacy practices.
A small tool with a deliberately narrow job
Gym Log Buddy is built to make it easier to record lifts and recall the last session, not to replace a training plan or provide validated coaching. Its most considered design decision is also its simplest: use the model to turn a loose note into candidate fields, then let the user correct those fields before they become history. The friend’s response, as quoted by Nayak, was “Bahut accha hai, keep it up.”
