A hybrid quantum computer is a coordinated system in which a quantum processing unit (QPU) handles selected circuit evaluations while classical CPUs, GPUs and software prepare the problem, control execution and interpret the results. It is not one processor that runs every instruction in both quantum and classical form. The useful work comes from the handoff: classical code chooses and compiles circuits, the QPU measures them, and classical code turns those measurements into the next decision.
What “hybrid quantum” means
Quantum and classical hardware have different jobs. A QPU manipulates qubits according to a circuit and returns measurement outcomes. Those outcomes are statistical, so a practical application normally needs repeated circuit executions and classical aggregation. Classical systems perform the surrounding work: expressing the application as a quantum-compatible objective, selecting parameters, compiling circuits for a particular device, submitting jobs, collecting results, optimizing parameters and deciding when to stop.

The division is dynamic rather than fixed. Some applications may send one circuit to a QPU and perform all analysis on a workstation. Others keep a high-performance-computing (HPC) cluster active while a scheduler coordinates many QPU calls. In every case, “hybrid” describes coordinated resources and software, not a new processor that physically merges quantum and classical instructions.
| Part of the system | Typical responsibility | Output passed to the other side |
|---|---|---|
| Classical host, CPU or GPU | Problem formulation, parameter selection, optimization, bookkeeping and result analysis | Circuits, parameters, job settings and stopping decisions |
| Quantum processing unit | Execute the mapped quantum circuit and measure qubits | Samples, expectation values or other measurement data |
| Runtime and scheduler | Compile, queue, route and monitor work across resources | Job status, compiled programs and returned data |
| Storage and networking | Move circuits and results and retain intermediate data | Input datasets, logs and result files |
This arrangement lets each resource handle the operation it is designed to perform. It does not, by itself, establish that an application is faster or cheaper than a classical implementation.

Why algorithms use both sides
Many near-term quantum algorithms are iterative. A classical optimizer proposes parameters for a parameterized circuit. The QPU evaluates that circuit, often by estimating a cost function from many measurements. Classical software uses the estimate to choose new parameters, and the loop repeats until a target, a resource limit or a stopping rule is reached.
“The hybrid nature of this family of algorithms comes from the fact that the cost functions are evaluated using quantum resources and optimized through classical ones.” — IBM Quantum Learning, “Variational algorithms.”
Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE)
VQE represents a problem, such as estimating a molecular ground-state energy, with a parameterized quantum circuit. The classical side initializes the parameters and an optimizer. For each trial, the QPU measures terms needed to estimate the energy. The optimizer then changes the parameters to reduce that estimate. The QPU is evaluating the objective; it is not independently running the full optimization procedure.

QAOA applies the same feedback pattern to a combinatorial objective. A classical routine selects circuit angles, the QPU samples candidate states, and the classical routine scores those samples and updates the angles. The number of iterations and QPU calls depends on the problem, optimizer and stopping criteria, so a single run can involve many trips through the execution system.

The practical workflow, step by step
- Express the application as a quantum problem. Define the objective, constraints, data encoding and the measurement quantities that will answer the application question. Decide which portions are better left entirely classical.
- Build and map a circuit. Create a parameterized or fixed circuit, then map its logical qubits and gates to the selected QPU. Device connectivity, supported operations and other hardware constraints can require compilation or transpilation that changes the circuit while preserving its intended operation.
- Submit and execute. Send the compiled circuit, parameters and shot or execution settings through a runtime. The QPU runs the circuit and returns measurement samples or derived expectation values.
- Aggregate and post-process classically. Classical code combines samples, applies estimators, checks errors and computes the objective value. In an iterative algorithm it also records the history needed by the optimizer.
- Update or finish. The optimizer proposes new parameters and returns to step three, or the workflow stops when its accuracy, iteration, time or resource condition is met. Final interpretation and any application-specific calculation remain classical.
An IBM-hosted SC25 sample-based quantum diagonalization demonstration illustrates this separation with four stages: mapping inputs to a quantum problem, optimizing and transpiling for target hardware, QPU execution, and classical post-processing. IBM describes those stages as jobs orchestrated across IBM Quantum systems and classical x86 compute using IBM LSF. That is a concrete vendor-hosted demonstration, not a universal deployment template.
Compilation is part of the hybrid workload
A circuit written for an abstract device is rarely ready to run unchanged. The classical toolchain chooses a physical-qubit layout, decomposes unsupported gates, inserts routing operations when qubits are not directly connected and selects execution settings. Transpilation can therefore affect circuit depth, runtime and the amount of data returned. A fair comparison of two implementations must specify the target QPU and compilation process; the same algorithmic circuit can become materially different machine circuits on different hardware.
Compilation also creates a scheduling boundary. Some workflows compile once and reuse a circuit with different parameter values. Others recompile as the circuit structure changes. Reusing compiled programs can reduce classical overhead, but it does not remove the QPU execution and queueing costs of each new evaluation.

How runtimes and queues affect elapsed time
Variational workloads commonly alternate a classical optimization step with a QPU cost evaluation. If every evaluation is submitted as a separate job, each submission may return to a queue. The optimizer can be ready while the next circuit waits, making wall-clock time much longer than the QPU’s active execution time.

Individual jobs
Separate jobs are straightforward and can fit occasional experiments or workflows that need independent monitoring. Their repeated queue entries can add delay, especially when an optimization requires many evaluations.
Batch execution
A batch groups related work for submission. It can reduce some submission overhead and simplify bookkeeping, but the batch still competes for the available execution capacity and may not provide the low-latency feedback an optimizer wants.
Session-style execution
IBM’s execution documentation presents session mode as an option for iterative workloads or dedicated access. Keeping a workflow associated with a session can make repeated evaluations more predictable than repeatedly entering a general queue. It is not automatically the best choice: users should tune execution mode to circuit count, iteration pattern, access policy and the resources available at the time.

Where the classical resources fit
There is no single required location for the classical side. A laptop or local server can prepare circuits and process small result sets. A cloud runtime can provide software orchestration and remote QPU access. An HPC installation can supply CPUs, GPUs, storage and a scheduler for large preprocessing or post-processing jobs. The relevant question is not which location is universally superior, but where each stage’s data, latency and compute requirements are best met.

| Classical placement | Typical role | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Local host | Development, small experiments and result inspection | Is the network reliable enough for repeated remote calls? Can it process the returned samples? |
| Cloud runtime | Managed submission, compilation and access to remote QPUs | How are jobs queued, metered and isolated? Where are data and logs stored? |
| HPC cluster | Large classical preprocessing, optimization, simulation or post-processing | How does the scheduler coordinate cluster jobs with QPU availability and data movement? |
IBM’s March 12, 2026 quantum-centric supercomputing blueprint describes QPUs working with CPUs and GPUs, high-speed networking and shared storage across research centers, on-premises systems and cloud environments. Its central architectural idea is to assign subtasks to the resource suited to them and connect the stages through orchestration software.

IBM reported a closed-loop exchange for an iron-sulfur cluster simulation involving a co-located IBM Quantum Heron processor and Fugaku. The announcement identified Fugaku as having 152,064 classical compute nodes. That number describes the specific Fugaku infrastructure cited in IBM’s 2026 announcement; it is not a standard requirement for hybrid quantum computing, a measure of QPU performance or evidence of a general quantum advantage.
The example is useful because it shows the feedback principle at system scale: classical computation prepares or analyzes work, the QPU executes selected quantum operations, and results move back into the classical workflow. It should not be read as proof that every scientific or commercial workload benefits from the arrangement.
How to evaluate a real hybrid implementation
When comparing two implementations, record the details that determine both usefulness and elapsed time:
Best Value
- Classical location: local machine, managed cloud runtime or HPC cluster.
- Loop scheduling: individual jobs, batches or a session-style workflow.
- Coordination boundary: where data is exchanged and how queueing is handled.
- Hardware mapping: target QPU, connectivity, supported gates and transpilation choices.
- Measurement method: number of circuit repetitions, estimators and post-processing steps.
- Evidence level: a workflow demonstration, a measured application result or a comparative performance claim.
Do not collapse these into a single “quantum speed” number. A workflow can be technically successful yet spend most of its elapsed time waiting in a queue or performing classical preparation. Conversely, a promising circuit result may not translate into an end-to-end application benefit once compilation, data transfer and optimization iterations are included.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The optimizer appears stalled
Check whether the next evaluation is waiting in a queue rather than running on the QPU. Inspect job status and consider batching related circuits or using a session-style mode when the workload is genuinely iterative and the platform permits it.
The circuit cannot be submitted
Verify that every gate and measurement is supported by the selected device. Re-run the compiler or transpiler for that target instead of assuming a circuit compiled for another QPU is portable.

Results fluctuate between iterations
Remember that measurements are samples. Ensure the classical estimator aggregates enough data for the objective being optimized, and keep execution settings consistent while diagnosing an optimizer’s behavior.
Classical post-processing dominates runtime
Profile mapping, compilation, optimization and data movement separately from QPU active time. Move suitable preprocessing or analysis to available CPU or GPU resources, and avoid transferring data repeatedly when an intermediate result can be retained within the runtime or cluster workflow.
A demonstration is presented as a speedup
Ask what was actually measured: successful orchestration, an application metric, or a controlled comparison with a classical baseline. The cited architecture and demonstration reports establish that integration is possible; they do not establish a universal performance advantage.
What a reader should remember
Hybrid quantum computing is a feedback system. Classical software frames the problem, compiles and schedules circuits, and interprets measurements. The QPU evaluates the quantum portion of the objective. Variational algorithms such as VQE and QAOA make the exchange explicit by repeating classical parameter updates and quantum cost evaluations. In practical deployments, queue policy, compilation, networking and post-processing can matter as much as the circuit itself. Current CPU–GPU–QPU integrations and HPC demonstrations show how the pieces can be connected, but each result remains specific to its hardware, workload and evidence level.
