They can search hotel information, return availability or rates, and sometimes hand you to a provider or perform another approved booking action. They are not unrestricted access to your ChatGPT account or every detail in your conversation.
The information shared depends on the specific integration, the action you request, your authorization, and the provider’s privacy policy. OpenAI says a reservation flow may ask for permission to share your name and email address with the reservation provider. A provider can then process additional search, account, booking and technical data under its own terms.

What “hotel ChatGPT plugin” means now
OpenAI’s current help material uses “plugins” for workflows that can include connected apps. An app is the external service connection; a plugin or workflow describes how ChatGPT uses that connection. The wording matters because older articles often treat plugins as a single, permanent marketplace of hotel tools. Current availability can instead depend on the ChatGPT product surface, account, plan, workspace administrator, country or region, and the travel provider.
OpenAI announced apps in ChatGPT with Booking.com and Expedia among pilot partners. That announcement establishes the launch context, not a promise that a legacy plugin is still available, that every user sees the same listing, or that every reservation can be completed inside ChatGPT.

What an integration can do
A travel connection may be limited to information retrieval, such as finding hotels that match dates, location, occupancy or amenities. Another may provide a booking link so the transaction continues on the provider’s site. A connection with additional approved actions might create or modify a reservation through the provider’s system. The integration’s declared capabilities and the approval screen are the authority for that particular flow.
What it cannot automatically do
OpenAI’s plugin documentation describes an access boundary: an integration cannot read content beyond the permissions granted to the relevant provider account or an administrator-managed source. ChatGPT does not receive an automatic, unrestricted view of your travel accounts, inbox, payment cards or all conversation content. The exact boundary still depends on the permissions and actions implemented by the provider.
How a hotel search or booking flows through ChatGPT
- You state a travel request. You might provide a destination, dates, number of guests, room preferences, budget or accessibility needs. Treat everything typed into the conversation as potentially visible to the ChatGPT service before any travel app is involved.
- ChatGPT identifies a suitable connected service. If an app is enabled and available to your account, ChatGPT can send the request to that service. If no connected service is available, it may provide general web results or explain that it cannot complete the action.
- The app receives only the information required by its integration. That can include search parameters, preferences and identifiers needed to return results. The integration’s terms and privacy policy describe its handling of that request.
- ChatGPT displays results or requests approval. A search may return names, prices, room types, availability and links. A more consequential action, such as proceeding toward a reservation, can trigger an authorization or data-sharing prompt.
- You approve, decline or leave the flow. OpenAI’s reservation guidance says ChatGPT may ask for permission to share your name and email address with the reservation provider. “May ask” is important: it is a conditional permission request, not a statement that every hotel flow always transfers those fields.
- The provider completes or receives the booking step. Some flows hand you to the provider’s website or app. Others may support an action through the connection. Confirmation, cancellation, payment and customer support are generally controlled by the reservation provider’s system and policies.
What information can be shared
There is no single, universal hotel-plugin data schema. The safest way to understand a flow is to separate the information OpenAI explicitly describes for reservation permission from categories a particular provider says it may process.
OpenAI’s direct reservation statement
In its Help Center article on searching the web, OpenAI states: “When booking a reservation, ChatGPT may ask for permission to share your name and email address with the reservation provider.” The statement identifies two possible fields and two conditions: the request occurs in a booking context, and ChatGPT asks for permission. It does not say that every search shares them, nor that every provider receives them automatically.

Travel-search details and preferences
A provider can process the information needed to search for a stay. Expedia’s privacy statement, for example, describes travel search details and preferences. In practical terms, that category can cover the destination, dates, number of travelers, room or property preferences and filters you submit. Expedia’s disclosure is provider-specific; it should not be treated as the data policy for Booking.com or any other service.
Connected-account information
If you authorize an account connection, the provider may process account-related information and the permissions associated with that connection. OpenAI says connected-app data is handled under the app’s own terms of service and privacy policy, and that capabilities vary by app. An account connection is therefore a separate decision from simply asking ChatGPT to find hotels.
Booking links and transaction context
Expedia’s policy lists booking links among the information it may process. A link can connect the conversational search to a provider page where dates, property selection or other context is carried forward. A link does not prove that payment or the entire reservation occurs inside ChatGPT; inspect where the browser or app takes you and which company presents the final confirmation.
Technical and security information
Expedia also describes technical request information, including an API key or tool identifier, IP address, user agent, request time, usage logs, error logs and fraud or abuse signals. These details help a service operate, secure and troubleshoot its integration. They are Expedia’s stated categories, not a universal list for every hotel connection.

Which privacy policy applies?
Three related but separate rule sets can apply.
ChatGPT and OpenAI controls
OpenAI controls the ChatGPT experience, the authorization prompt and the product settings that determine whether an app can be used. Its documentation explains the general permissions boundary and supported-action model. Those documents do not provide a complete field-by-field list for every travel provider.
The connected provider’s terms
OpenAI says data from a connected app is handled according to that app’s terms of service and privacy policy. Once information is sent to the provider, that policy explains the provider’s purposes, retention, disclosures and rights process. Expedia explicitly says third parties are independently responsible for their processing under their own privacy policies.
Your account or workspace administrator
A personal account and a managed workspace can expose different app controls. An administrator may restrict which connections are available or which sources an app can access. A provider account may also impose its own authorization requirements. The result is that two people asking the same question can see different prompts or supported actions.

- Confirm the app identity. Read the name of the connected service and verify that it is the company you intend to use. Do not assume a generic “hotel search” label identifies the final booking provider.
- Read the requested permissions. Look for account access, profile fields, contact details, booking history or permission to take actions. A search-only connection should not be treated as equivalent to a reservation-capable connection.
- Separate required fields from optional fields. If the prompt lists your name or email, note whether you can decline or continue without connecting. OpenAI’s wording allows that a reservation flow may ask for those fields; it does not require you to approve.
- Open the provider’s current privacy policy. Check the sections covering search data, preferences, account information, links, retention, sharing and technical logs. Read the policy for the exact provider, not a different travel service.
- Check where confirmation occurs. If ChatGPT supplies a link, inspect the destination before entering payment or identity information. The provider’s page should clearly identify the merchant or reservation service responsible for the booking.
- Review connected-app controls after the trip. Remove an account connection you no longer need and check whether your ChatGPT workspace or provider account offers a list of authorized apps.
Search, recommendation and booking are different privacy events

The table describes decision points, not a guaranteed payload. An integration can request less or more within the permissions it declares, and the provider’s policy controls its subsequent processing.

Common misunderstandings and failure points
“The plugin sees my whole ChatGPT history.”
OpenAI’s documentation describes access as permission-limited. That does not mean a provider receives every conversation. It can receive the content or fields needed for the action you authorize, subject to the integration design and the provider’s policy.
“A hotel search shares my identity automatically.”
OpenAI’s reservation statement says ChatGPT may ask permission to share your name and email when booking. A search that never enters a reservation flow may have different requirements. Read the prompt instead of assuming either automatic sharing or complete anonymity.
“Every travel app collects Expedia’s categories.”
Expedia’s list of search details, preferences, account information, booking links and technical request data is an example of one provider’s disclosure. It cannot establish what another service collects. Compare the exact provider policy and authorization screen.

A search result, price display or booking link is not necessarily a completed booking. Wait for a provider-issued confirmation number and verify the dates, guest name, cancellation terms and payment details in the provider’s confirmation channel.
The app is unavailable or the action fails.
Availability can vary by account, plan, workspace, region, product surface and provider. A failed action can also reflect missing authorization, an unsupported operation or a provider-side error. Use the provider’s site directly if appropriate, and do not repeatedly grant permissions without understanding what changed.
What is still unknown
Public official documentation does not establish a complete, current list of hotel integrations available to every user. It also does not provide a field-by-field exchange specification for every provider. Exact data can change as an app, account connection, workspace policy or booking workflow changes.
For that reason, the most reliable evidence at the moment of use is the integration’s permission prompt, its current capability description, the provider’s privacy policy and the final booking page. If those sources conflict or are unclear, avoid authorizing the action and contact the provider before submitting personal information.
