Digital directories changed tradie hiring by bringing provider options, reviews and contact tools into one online journey. They can make it easier to find and compare tradespeople, but a listing or profile badge is not proof of quality. The shift is broader than directories: search engines, review sites and social media now also shape how people discover home-services providers.
What changed when people started using online directories to hire tradespeople?
Before digital intermediaries, a homeowner might rely on a personal recommendation or search through separate listings and contact providers one at a time. An online directory or marketplace can gather options in one place, letting a customer compare providers and make contact with less effort. The UK Competition and Markets Authority describes comparison services generally as intermediaries that can help people compare and potentially switch or purchase from multiple businesses; that explains the mechanism, not a measured effect specific to tradies. Some platforms go beyond listing names. In Australia, hipages Group described an on-demand model using technology to connect consumers and tradies, support communication and coordinate jobs. Its 2020 announcement reported that 77% of Australians surveyed wanted to see recommendations before hiring a tradie. That is a company-reported survey result; its methodology is not established in the announcement. hipages Group, 2020

How do homeowners find tradespeople online now?
Survey evidence from the United States shows how prominent online discovery has become in home-services searches, though it should not be generalized to every country or period. Tinuiti reported in 2024 that 86% of respondents began their active search for home-services providers online. Among online searchers, 61% started with a traditional search engine, and 64% consulted Google reviews when looking for reviews of home-services companies. Tinuiti, 2024
Discovery also extends beyond dedicated directories. A separate Tinuiti summary in 2025 identifies search engines and social media as leading discovery channels, with review sites and discussion forums also playing a role. This is a different study, not a direct year-over-year comparison with the 2024 figures. Tinuiti, 2025

Together, these findings point to a more distributed search journey: a homeowner may find a name through a search engine, social post, directory or recommendation, then use reviews and direct conversations to assess whether to proceed.
Are online tradie reviews trustworthy?
Reviews can help reveal patterns in customer experience, but they are one signal rather than a competence test. A peer-reviewed study of transaction data from a large U.S. home-improvement platform found that consumer demand responded more to professionals’ reviews than to platform-verified licensing status. The result describes observed demand on that platform; it does not show that reviews establish skill or that licensing is unimportant. Read reviews for detail and consistency rather than relying on a single rating. Consider how many reviews there are, how recent and specific they are, whether similar strengths or problems recur, and whether the platform explains how it collects reviews. A profile badge or verification label should also be read narrowly: check what the service actually verified rather than treating the badge as a general quality guarantee.
How do I find a reliable tradie online?
Use the directory to build a shortlist, then check each provider against the work you need and the rules that apply where you live. Compare providers on the same criteria:

- Relevant experience: Ask whether they have completed work of the type and scale you need.
- Reviews: Look at number, recency, detail and consistency, and check the platform’s explanation of review collection.
- Credentials: Confirm locally required licences, registrations and insurance with the relevant authority or provider. Requirements vary by location and job.
- Written quote and scope: Check inclusions, exclusions, materials, timing, payment stages and how changes or variations will be handled.
- Platform role: Establish whether the service only lists providers, sells leads, verifies credentials, or coordinates booking and payment. Safeguards differ between services.
Keep the provider’s written quote and the terms of any platform booking together, so you can see who is responsible for what if plans change.

Available evidence supports a shift toward online search, reviews and platform-mediated connections, but it does not establish that every hire begins online or that directories alone caused better prices, quality or outcomes. The sources cover different places, dates and kinds of evidence: a UK regulatory account of comparison services, an Australian company announcement, U.S. consumer surveys, and a peer-reviewed study of transactions on one platform. They illustrate how discovery and assessment work; they do not provide a single continuous history of tradie directories or a quantified print-to-digital change.
