Home Craving is a recipe and ingredient-substitution website created by Andre Fernandes for people cooking away from home. It is designed to help when you miss a familiar dish but cannot find one of its ingredients where you live.
What Home Craving is designed to do
Fernandes describes four ways to use the project: generate a recipe from a dish name, find alternatives for hard-to-source ingredients, adapt a recipe you already have, and look for nearby shops that may carry ingredients. The examples in the project article include Kerala beef fry and vada pav; they illustrate possible inputs, not evidence of search popularity.

The idea addresses a practical problem with an emotional edge: a recipe from home can be difficult to reproduce when the ingredients available in a new country differ from the ones you know. Home Craving aims to help bridge that gap rather than require a cook to abandon the dish.

Start with a dish or your own recipe
According to Fernandes, a user can enter a dish name to get a recipe or paste in a family recipe and adapt its ingredients. That makes the tool relevant both when you remember a dish but not its exact method and when you already have instructions you want to keep.

Look for ingredient alternatives
The project describes a substitution score on a 0-to-100 scale, using flavor, texture, moisture, acidity, and heat as factors. Fernandes says the initial substitution data was written by the builder and the scores are a rough guide until real ratings accumulate. Treat a suggested swap as a starting point: an alternative can change the dish, and the score is not an independently validated measure of how closely it reproduces the original.
Check nearby shops and prices carefully
Home Craving is also described as showing likely nearby shops and an online reference price. Shop discovery depends on location, and the online price should not be read as the price on a local shelf. The project article does not establish that a listed shop has the item in stock, so check with the retailer before making a trip.

Cooking support beyond the ingredient list
Fernandes says the site can read cooking steps aloud, which may be useful when your hands are busy. It also offers a list of foods to exclude from every recipe, intended for allergies or other dietary exclusions. These are feature descriptions from the project’s creator, not independently verified performance or safety guarantees. For an allergy, verify every ingredient and cross-contact risk yourself rather than relying on an automatically generated recipe.

In his project article, Fernandes reports using Gemma through a hosted API for recipes and substitutions, FastAPI for the application, OpenStreetMap services for location and nearby shops, SerpApi for online price references, ElevenLabs for spoken steps, and Render for hosting. Those implementation choices explain the described experience; they do not establish the accuracy of generated recipes, local store information, or price results.

The author also says the hosted demo is open-weight but not offline or private, and that he has not benchmarked it against a closed model. That means readers should not assume that using an open-weight model makes the hosted service private, or that its recipe quality has been compared in a controlled way with other systems.
How to judge whether a suggested swap will work
The project article does not provide comparative test results, so it cannot establish that Home Craving’s substitutions are more accurate than another recipe tool’s. If you try it, assess each suggestion against the needs of the specific dish:
- Recipe fidelity: Does the suggested ingredient preserve the flavor and texture that matter in the dish?
- Local availability: Can you actually obtain it where you live, and is the nearby-shop result current?
- Transparency: Does the tool make clear what a score means and where a swap is only an approximation?
- Dietary safety: Can you independently confirm the replacement and the rest of the recipe meet your dietary needs?
What the project article does—and does not—establish
Fernandes’s account presents Home Craving as a useful concept for cooks separated from familiar ingredients, combining recipe generation with substitutions, location-based shop discovery, spoken directions, and recipe exclusions. It is an account of the project, not an independent product test. It does not establish current availability, recipe accuracy, store inventory, substitution reliability, or measured performance.

The article includes a brief positive comment from Fernandes’s friend Sarah in the UK, who said the site showed a recipe and alternatives she could get there. That is informal feedback from one friend, not a formal review or evidence of broader results. Read the project article on DEV Community.
