How Higher Memory Prices Affect the Cost of PCs, Phones, and Servers

Higher memory prices are adding cost pressure to PCs, smartphones, and servers, but they do not translate into a matching percentage increase in the price of every finished device. The latest TrendForce outlook, published September 30, 2026, forecasts 4Q26 contract-price increases of 10–15% for conventional DRAM and 15–20% for NAND Flash, quarter over quarter. Those are forecasts for memory products negotiated between suppliers and large buyers—not retail forecasts for laptops, phones, or complete servers. How much a buyer ultimately pays depends on the device’s memory type, inventories, procurement terms, and the manufacturer’s response.

What the latest memory-price outlook says

TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook forecasts that, in the fourth quarter of 2026, conventional DRAM contract prices will rise 10–15% quarter over quarter and NAND Flash contract prices will rise 15–20%. The outlook also says enterprise SSDs are the only category in its forecast expected to see price growth accelerate, driven by strong cloud service provider demand. These are market forecasts for particular product categories, not observed price changes for every buyer or region. TrendForce’s 4Q26 memory-price outlook

It is important to keep the category and comparison period attached to each figure. Conventional DRAM, mobile DRAM, server DRAM, NAND Flash, and enterprise SSDs do not share one price or one set of supply conditions. A forecast for conventional DRAM, for example, is not automatically a forecast for the memory in a particular phone or the storage in a server.

For context, TrendForce’s earlier July 3, 2026 outlook forecast 3Q26 quarter-over-quarter increases of 13–18% for conventional DRAM and 10–15% for NAND Flash. It said high prices were pushing consumer-market buyers toward affordability limits. The September outlook is the later forecast for 4Q26; the July figures describe the previous quarter’s expectation, not an additional increase to apply to the September forecast. Why a component-price increase does not equal a device-price increase

A memory contract price is one point in a longer chain. Suppliers negotiate with large buyers; device makers then manage component purchasing, inventories, production costs, product configurations, and retail pricing. A higher cost at the supplier level can reach a new device’s price later, as lower-cost inventory is used up and more expensive components move through production. The timing and amount vary by company and product.

There is no established universal pass-through rate from a memory contract forecast to a finished PC, phone, or server. A manufacturer can raise a device’s price, absorb some cost, change a configuration, adjust production, or use a combination of responses. The cited market outlooks do not provide a model-by-model or regional percentage increase for finished devices, so it would be misleading to turn a 10–15% component forecast into a claim that a laptop or phone will cost 10–15% more.

When assessing an announced device price, distinguish the price layer being discussed:

What is driving pressure on memory supply

TrendForce says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products in 4Q26. Demand from cloud providers and server manufacturers is also strong as CPU availability improves and buyers increase procurement. Constraints in packaging, testing, and front-end production flexibility limit how quickly supply can respond, leaving the wider market undersupplied. The combination helps explain why server-oriented demand can affect memory availability beyond the server market itself. TrendForce’s 4Q26 outlook

Different memory products are affected in different ways. Server DRAM is described as undersupplied, while mobile DRAM allocations remain tight as suppliers direct capacity toward higher-margin and AI-related uses. For NAND products used in phones, the September outlook says smartphone brands are relying largely on existing inventories, limiting incremental procurement. These are distinct conditions; they should not be collapsed into a single claim that every kind of memory is equally scarce.

How PCs may be affected

For PC buyers, the most direct path is through higher-cost components entering a manufacturer’s inventory and then its products. TrendForce says notebook inventories increasingly reflect higher component costs and that those costs are weighing on end-market sales. Its July outlook expected notebook retail prices to rise as more expensive components moved through inventories; the September outlook describes ongoing consumer-side cost pressure. This indicates a risk of upward retail pressure, not a guaranteed increase for every laptop or desktop. TrendForce’s July outlook and September outlook

Prices, configurations, and timing

Timing depends partly on what a PC maker already has in stock and when it buys replacement components. A price change at the supplier level does not necessarily appear at retail immediately; inventory can delay the effect. Conversely, tight-supply expectations led PC OEMs to continue procuring aggressively, according to TrendForce, while higher costs were already weighing on sales.

Price is not the only possible adjustment. TrendForce reports that PC brands are reducing SSD capacity in mainstream models to lower bill-of-material costs. That is a storage-capacity change, not evidence of a universal reduction in installed RAM. Buyers comparing PC configurations should therefore check both the memory specification and SSD capacity rather than assume that two products at similar prices include the same components.

Can a separate RAM upgrade help?

A desktop owner may be able to buy compatible memory separately, but upgrading a PC does not offset a higher price for a complete prebuilt system. Compatibility depends on the computer’s memory generation, motherboard support, capacity limits, and upgradeability. Some laptops have soldered memory, which is not a removable module that the owner can replace. Check the exact computer model’s specifications before buying a module; the market forecasts do not identify compatible parts for individual systems.

How smartphones may be affected

Mobile DRAM is integrated into a phone and is generally not a consumer-upgradeable component. If its cost rises, manufacturers may face pressure to adjust device pricing, production choices, or the availability of particular configurations; buyers cannot usually respond by installing a cheaper memory module themselves.

TrendForce’s July outlook expected smartphone vendors to raise retail prices to offset high LPDRAM costs, while noting possible effects on sales. Its September outlook says rising costs and the depletion of lower-cost inventories continue to weigh on smartphone production in 4Q26, with mobile DRAM allocations remaining tight. These are market-level expectations, not confirmation that any named brand or model will receive a price increase. TrendForce’s July outlook and September outlook

Storage is a separate consideration. The September forecast says smartphone brands are relying largely on existing NAND inventories, limiting new procurement. That does not establish that every phone’s storage capacity will change or that phone prices will rise by the NAND forecast percentage. A specific model’s price and configuration require model- and market-specific evidence.

Why server costs follow a different path

Servers use memory and storage bought through procurement arrangements that can differ substantially from consumer-device purchasing. TrendForce describes server DRAM as undersupplied, but says some supplier price increases may lag the market average because long-term agreements govern some procurement. A quarterly market forecast therefore should not be applied directly to a particular server contract.

Enterprise SSDs are a distinct pressure point: the September outlook expects their price growth to accelerate in 4Q26 amid strong cloud service provider demand. This is relevant to infrastructure buyers because SSDs are storage devices, not DRAM. The source does not establish a corresponding percentage increase for complete servers, which can include many components and be sold under varied commercial terms.

Cloud and AI infrastructure demand is part of the pressure described by TrendForce, but the forecast alone cannot determine a specific provider’s purchasing cost, contract timing, or customer pricing. A business evaluating a server quote needs to compare the quoted configuration and procurement terms rather than substitute a market-wide component forecast for its own price.

How to evaluate a price change or buying decision

  1. Identify the memory category. Establish whether the claim concerns conventional PC DRAM, mobile LPDRAM, server DRAM, NAND Flash, or an SSD. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
  2. Check the price layer. Determine whether the figure is a supplier contract forecast, a component cost, a manufacturer’s cost estimate, or a retail price.
  3. Read the period and basis. The cited TrendForce figures are quarter-over-quarter forecasts for 3Q26 or 4Q26. They are not year-over-year changes or immediate checkout-price adjustments.
  4. Look for inventory and contract effects. Existing component stock can delay pass-through in PCs and phones; long-term agreements may make some server DRAM price changes lag the market.
  5. Compare full configurations. For a PC, check RAM and SSD capacity; for a phone, compare the specified storage and memory configuration; for a server, compare the exact components and terms in the quote.
  6. Separate an observed change from a forecast. A market outlook describes an expected category trend. Confirm a specific device’s current price and availability with the seller or manufacturer for the relevant market.

What the available figures can—and cannot—tell buyers

The September forecast is useful for understanding direction and relative pressure in the memory supply chain: conventional DRAM and NAND Flash were both expected to become more expensive in 4Q26, with NAND’s forecast range higher, while enterprise SSD price growth was expected to accelerate. It does not say how much a particular manufacturer pays, what fraction of a device’s bill of materials memory represents, or how much a finished product will cost at retail.

TrendForce is a market research firm, and its outlook is a forecast rather than an audited disclosure by a specific device maker. The cited material does not establish realized cost increases for named manufacturers, current model-by-model retail price changes, or regional pass-through rates.
