For ordinary seated viewing, mount a television so the center of the visible screen is level with your eyes when you are sitting normally. Measure your seated eye height from the floor, then use the TV’s actual screen height to mark the top and bottom edges. A fixed number such as 42 inches from the floor to the screen center is only an approximation for a particular viewer and sofa, not a universal rule.
Screen height and viewing distance solve different problems: eye level determines where the screen belongs on the wall, while diagonal size, resolution, room depth and personal preference determine how far away the sofa should be. The steps below let you calculate both without relying on a one-size-fits-all mounting height.

The short answer: put the screen center at seated eye level
Sit in the seat used most often for television and adopt your normal relaxed posture. The height from the floor to your eyes is the target height for the center of the screen. This is the central recommendation in the Japan Ergonomics Society’s 2012 display-placement guideline and in practical placement advice from Samsung US and Philips.
The guideline’s finding is notable because it does not change the center-at-eye-level recommendation for different screen sizes or viewing distances. A larger television needs more wall space and may change the sofa distance, but it does not automatically belong higher on the wall.

Samsung gives 42 inches from the floor to the screen center as an approximation for a 5-foot-6-inch viewer on a standard couch. Treat that as a starting example only. Your sofa cushion height, posture, body proportions and the people who use the room can move the correct center height several inches in either direction.
Measure the height that fits your seating
1. Use the primary viewing seat
Choose the chair or sofa position used for most programs. Sit back as you normally would rather than perching on the edge or stretching your neck forward. If the room has a clear primary seat, measure from there. If several seats are equally important, measure each one and compare the results before drilling.
2. Measure from the floor to your eyes
Ask another person to hold a tape measure vertically from the floor to the level of your eyes while you are seated. Keep your head in a neutral position; do not tilt your chin up to anticipate the future screen. The measured value is your target screen-center height.
For example, if your eyes are 40 inches above the floor in your usual seat, mark 40 inches as the centerline of the visible screen. Do not measure to the top of your head, the top of the sofa or the top edge of the television.
3. Check the result from other frequently used seats
Walk through the viewing positions that matter: the other end of the sectional, a recliner, a dining chair or a floor cushion. The main seat should control the decision, but this check exposes a height that will be uncomfortable for a substantial part of the household. Practical placement guidance from Samsung and Sony emphasizes seating position and viewer eye height rather than a universal floor measurement.
Calculate the top and bottom edges before marking the wall
Once you know the desired center height, use the television’s actual screen height. Divide that height by two:

LG lists approximately 32.5 inches as the height of a 65-inch television. Using that figure only as an arithmetic example, and a measured eye level of 40 inches:
- Half of the 32.5-inch screen height is 16.25 inches.
- 40 inches minus 16.25 inches places the bottom edge at approximately 23.75 inches from the floor.
- 40 inches plus 16.25 inches places the top edge at approximately 56.25 inches.
The calculation illustrates the method; it is not a claim that every 65-inch model is exactly 32.5 inches tall. Verify your own model’s dimensions before transferring marks to the wall.
Allow for furniture, outlets and the mount
Before fixing the centerline, check the space below the calculated bottom edge. Measure the cabinet or console, soundbar, center speaker and any objects that must remain on the furniture. Samsung says that, when its 42-inch center approximation leaves no room for a cabinet, placing the screen about 4–6 inches above the furniture can be a practical setup suggestion. Preserve the eye-level target as far as the room allows rather than automatically using that gap.
Also locate power and signal outlets, studs or masonry, the mount’s vertical rails and the television’s cable sockets. A mathematically correct height is not useful if a cable is crushed, the mount misses structural support or a cabinet blocks the lower edge.

Mounting height and viewing distance are related in the room but answer different questions. Eye level determines the vertical position of the screen center. Screen diagonal, resolution, image preference and available floor depth determine how far the seating should be from the screen.

What the 2012 Japan Ergonomics Society guideline found
The Japan Ergonomics Society guideline reports measured eye heights and line-of-sight angles from 393 people in 83 households. In that dataset, a horizontal line of sight to the screen center was the most common arrangement, and placing the center at eye level was the most common real-world case. The sample should not be treated as representative of every population.
The same guideline describes experimentally determined optimum and minimum acceptable viewing distances for 16:9 LCD and plasma televisions, expressed as multiples of screen height and excluding CRT sets. Because the document uses screen-height multiples rather than one diagonal-inch formula, its figures should not be mixed casually with manufacturer rules of thumb.
LG’s resolution-based distance formulas
LG US gives suggested formulas of 0.14 feet per diagonal inch for Full HD and 0.07 feet per diagonal inch for 4K. These are LG’s recommendations, not a universal engineering standard. Applying the arithmetic produces the following planning examples:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Diagonal size | Full HD suggestion (0.14 ft per inch) |
4K suggestion (0.07 ft per inch) |
|---|---|---|
| 55 inches | 7.7 feet | 3.85 feet |
| 65 inches | 9.1 feet | 4.55 feet |
| 75 inches | 10.5 feet | 5.25 feet |
These distances are calculated examples from LG’s formulas, not promises of identical comfort for every viewer. A room may force a longer distance, or you may prefer to sit farther away even with a high-resolution panel. Compare the available space, the resolution of the material you watch most, your tolerance for visible pixel structure and the television manufacturer’s own guidance.
Why published distance recommendations disagree
Manufacturers and ergonomic standards use different methods, screen measurements and assumptions about resolution and image quality. A formula based on diagonal size will not produce the same answer as a guideline based on screen height. Avoid presenting one multiplier as the single correct distance. Use a published figure as a starting range, then adjust the sofa until subtitles, fine detail and wide scenes are comfortable without constant head movement.
Adjust the height for the way your room is used
Raised seating, bar stools and standing viewers
If the room is primarily used from bar stools, a high counter or a standing position, the viewers’ eye line is higher and a higher screen can make sense. Samsung specifically discusses raised seating and standing use and suggests considering a downward angle when people also watch from ordinary seats.

Do not raise the television merely because the room has a tall ceiling. Raise it because the dominant viewing position is genuinely higher, and test the sightline from the normal seated position before committing.
Mounting above a cabinet or fireplace-height furniture
Furniture can impose a lower boundary. Measure the required clearance for the cabinet, soundbar and ventilation, then compare that boundary with the calculated bottom edge. If the only way to clear the furniture is to move the screen well above eye level, consider changing the furniture or using a lower-profile component rather than accepting a permanently uncomfortable angle.
When exact center alignment is impossible
Philips advises keeping the top edge no more than 15 cm above seated eye level when the ideal center-at-eye-level position cannot be achieved. This is Philips guidance, not a universal limit. Use it as a practical fallback while recognizing that the resulting center will still be above your eyes on a large screen.
Multiple rows or unusually wide seating
Choose the primary row as the reference and verify the sightline from the secondary row. A mount that can tilt downward may reduce the compromise for people sitting lower, but tilting changes the visible angle and can introduce reflections. Sony advises checking the viewing-angle specifications for the exact television model; those specifications are more relevant than a generic angle claimed for another screen.
Choose a mount that fits the television and the wall
A fixed mount keeps the set close to the wall and is appropriate when the centerline is correct for every important seat. A tilting mount adds a downward aiming option when the television must be higher for raised seating, furniture or standing viewers. Neither type corrects a badly measured center height, so calculate and mark first.

No single mount model is right for every wall or television. A tape measure and a level are useful for layout and alignment, but they do not replace the installation instructions supplied with the screen and mount.

- Record the viewing positions. List the primary seat and any secondary seats that must remain comfortable. Note whether the room is also used from bar stools or while standing.
- Measure seated eye level. Sit normally and measure from the floor to your eyes. Mark this value as the screen-center height.
- Confirm the television’s dimensions. Use the model’s actual screen height, then divide it by two to calculate the top and bottom edges.
- Map the wall. Find studs or identify the approved masonry anchors. Locate electrical boxes, cable routes, trim, doors and windows.
- Check furniture and equipment. Measure the cabinet, soundbar, speakers and required clearances. If the calculated bottom edge conflicts with furniture, decide whether to alter the furniture, accept a documented compromise or change the room layout.
- Select the mount. Match VESA spacing, weight, supported size, wall construction and cable clearance. Choose a tilt function only when the room’s viewing positions justify it.
- Mark the centerline and bracket holes. Transfer the calculated center height to the wall, then use the mount’s instructions to locate its holes. Do not assume the bracket’s geometric center is the television’s screen center; use the bracket and television diagrams.
- Install the wall plate securely. Use the specified fasteners and structural attachment method for the wall. Keep the plate level; a level plate makes final alignment possible.
- Attach the vertical rails or interface plate. Fit the correct VESA holes and screws, tightening to the manufacturer’s torque or tightness instructions without forcing an incorrect screw.
- Hang and inspect the television. With a second person supporting the set, engage the safety locks, connect cables without sharp bends and confirm that the screen is level and the lower edge clears furniture.
- Test every important seat. Sit in the primary position, then the secondary positions. If the mount permits tilt, make the smallest adjustment that improves the higher-seat or lower-seat sightline without creating glare.
Common problems and how to correct them
The screen feels too high
Neck extension, a visible strip of wall beneath the television and the need to look upward during ordinary scenes usually indicate that the centerline is above the dominant seated eye level. Re-measure from the sofa rather than from the floor to the cabinet. If the television is already mounted, lower the wall plate when possible; use tilt only as a limited correction, not as a substitute for relocating a badly high installation.
The lower edge blocks the soundbar or cabinet
Measure the obstruction and compare it with the calculated bottom edge. Samsung’s 4–6-inch-above-furniture suggestion can help when its approximate center height conflicts with a cabinet, but keep the screen as close to the measured eye-level position as the furniture and cable routing permit. A lower-profile soundbar or different cabinet may preserve a better sightline than raising the entire television.
Different family members disagree about the height
Measure the eye height from each important seat and write down the center-height range. Give the primary seat the greatest weight, then test the proposed centerline from the others before drilling. If the room alternates between standard seating and bar stools, a modestly higher installation with controlled downward tilt may be a better compromise than optimizing for a position used only occasionally.
The picture is uncomfortable even at the calculated height
Check whether the sofa has been moved, the viewer is reclining, or the television is being watched from a different seat than the one measured. Then check glare and the model’s viewing-angle specifications. Sony recommends consulting the exact model’s viewing-angle information; do not infer performance from another television.
The wall is uneven or the screen is visibly crooked
Recheck the wall plate with a level before hanging the television. Follow the mount’s instructions for spacers or adjustment screws rather than forcing the panel into alignment. If the wall cannot support the specified attachment method, stop and use the approved structural solution instead of relying on unsupported anchors.
Cables do not reach or are pinched
Disconnect power before changing the installation. Confirm the location and direction of every connector, allow the bend radius specified by the cable and mount instructions, and verify clearance through the full tilt range. A cable path that works with the screen flat may be strained when the mount is angled.

Use this order when the room presents competing constraints:
- Protect the primary seated sightline by setting the screen center at measured eye level.
- Use the actual screen height to calculate the top and bottom edges.
- Resolve structural, cable and furniture conflicts without moving the screen higher by default.
- If raised seating or standing use is substantial, consider a tilting mount and test the sightline from every important position.
- Choose viewing distance separately, using screen size, resolution, available room depth and personal comfort rather than treating one formula as mandatory.
The result should be a screen whose center is close to the eyes of the people who watch most often, with enough clearance for furniture and cables and a mount that is rated for the exact television and wall. That measured approach is more reliable than copying a floor height from a different sofa or viewer.
