Higher jet-fuel prices raise airlines’ costs, but they do not translate automatically into a matching increase in your ticket price. Airlines may raise base fares, add or increase a carrier surcharge in some markets, change optional-service prices, alter schedules, or absorb some of the added cost. What a traveler pays depends on the airline, route, competition, demand, booking timing, and fuel hedging.
Why fuel prices matter to airline costs
Jet fuel is a large and volatile airline expense. In its June 2026 industry outlook, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast that fuel would account for 31.4% of airline operating expenses in 2026, compared with 25.4% in 2025. IATA attributed the higher share to higher fuel prices, while forecasting fuel consumption to remain unchanged from 2025.

That cost share helps explain why a sustained increase in fuel prices can put pressure on fares. But it is an industry-level measure, not a formula for calculating a particular ticket. Airlines have other expenses and sources of revenue, and their exposure to fuel prices differs. A 10% rise in jet fuel, for example, does not establish that a fare on a particular route will rise by 10%.
Fuel prices also are not the only factor setting fares. Airlines consider how many travelers want to fly, what competing carriers charge, how many seats are available, and what customers are willing to pay. Those forces can magnify, mute, delay, or outweigh the effect of fuel costs on an individual itinerary.

How higher fuel costs can reach your ticket
Higher base fares
An airline can incorporate additional operating costs into the fare it offers for a seat. If it has enough pricing power and demand supports higher prices, it may raise fares. The adjustment can vary across routes, dates, and cabins: an airline may have more room to increase prices on a busy route with limited alternatives than on a route where several carriers compete for passengers.
Fares are offered for particular trips and change as booking conditions change. A traveler may therefore see a higher price after a fuel-cost increase without being able to identify fuel as the sole cause. A fare can also change for reasons unrelated to fuel, such as demand or the availability of seats at a particular price.
Carrier surcharges in some markets
Some airlines outside the United States may itemize a fuel or carrier surcharge separately. The surcharge can make part of the price increase more visible, but its presence, amount, and treatment vary by airline and market. A separate surcharge is not a universal practice.

Associated Press reporting from March 2026 said major U.S. carriers generally incorporate fuel costs into ticket prices rather than adding a separate fuel surcharge. For a U.S. traveler, the absence of a line labeled “fuel surcharge” does not mean fuel has no effect on the price; it may be reflected in the fare instead.

Optional services and the total trip price
A ticket’s base fare is not always the amount a traveler ultimately pays. Airlines may adjust prices for optional extras, such as baggage or seat selection, as another way to earn revenue. A trip’s total price can therefore rise even if the displayed base fare remains unchanged.
For U.S. air travel, the Department of Transportation (DOT) says carriers must disclose the full price, including taxes, fees, and carrier-imposed surcharges, and make optional-service fees available to consumers. Its fare-information page was last updated July 22, 2021. When comparing offers, use the full amount for the itinerary and services you actually want, rather than treating a base fare or a surcharge line as the whole cost.
Absorbing costs or changing operations
Airlines do not necessarily pass every increase on to passengers. They can absorb some of it through lower margins, seek revenue elsewhere, or adjust how much capacity they offer. If elevated fuel prices persist, schedule or route changes are also possible. Such changes can affect travelers through fewer choices or different itineraries, not just through the fare on a given seat.

IATA’s June 2026 outlook describes an industry under fuel-cost pressure, but its figures are forecasts rather than settled results. It forecast average jet-fuel prices of $152 per barrel in 2026, nearly 70% above its $90-per-barrel figure for 2025. IATA also forecast that passenger ticket yields would grow by 7% and passenger ticket revenue would reach $839 billion in 2026, up from $768 billion in 2025.

Those revenue and yield projections are not a promise that each passenger’s fare will rise by 7%. A yield is an industry-level measure, and aggregate revenue reflects more than the price of one ticket. IATA forecast passenger-demand growth of 2.1% in 2026, so its expected ticket-revenue growth outpaced its demand-growth forecast. The association described fare increases as an effort to recoup some oil-shock costs, while also forecasting that operating expenses would grow faster than revenue.
IATA forecast net profit per passenger of $4.50 for 2026. That figure illustrates the limited profit cushion in its industry outlook; it does not describe the profit earned on every airline, route, or ticket. Taken together, the forecasts indicate both that higher fuel prices can contribute to higher fares and that airlines may still bear part of the increase.

Why fuel hedging can delay, but not prevent, fare effects
Some airlines use fuel hedges to reduce the impact of price swings on fuel they expect to buy. IATA said the global airline industry had hedged roughly one third of expected 2026 fuel consumption. A hedge can smooth short-term volatility, so a rise in market prices may not affect every carrier’s costs at the same time or to the same extent.

Hedging is a buffer, not a guarantee that fuel costs will stay low. IATA cautioned that hedges do not eliminate exposure to sustained price increases. It also noted that hedges based on crude oil can leave airlines exposed to changes in the “crack spread”—the difference between crude-oil prices and the price of refined products such as jet fuel.

This is one reason a ticket price may not move immediately when fuel prices change. The airline’s actual cost exposure depends partly on its hedges and purchase timing, while its decision about fares depends on demand and competition. The same factors mean that a fall in fuel prices does not ensure an immediate or equal fare reduction.

Historical data offer a useful caution against treating fuel prices as a direct fare index. An IATA report published in November 2024 examined January 2015 through August 2024. It found that global airfares rose more slowly than consumer prices and jet-fuel prices over that decade. By August 2024, nominal industry-wide airfares were 3% below their August 2015 level, while real fares—adjusted for inflation—were 37% lower. Real jet-fuel prices were 2% higher than in August 2015.
The comparison changes with the starting point: IATA said fares were below 2015 levels but above 2019 levels. These are historical global averages, not a forecast and not a guide to the price of a particular route. They show why a fuel-price move alone cannot tell you what a ticket should cost.

How to compare fares when fuel prices are changing
You cannot isolate fuel as the cause of a price difference just by looking at two ticket listings. To make a useful comparison, hold the trip details steady and include the charges that affect your actual travel plans.
- Match the itinerary. Compare the same origin, destination, travel dates, cabin, and itinerary. If one option connects and the other is direct, treat that as a meaningful difference rather than assuming the fares are directly comparable.
- Compare the full price. Include taxes, carrier charges, and any baggage, seat-selection, or other optional services you expect to use. In the United States, DOT rules require disclosure of the full ticket price and availability of optional-service fee information.
- Note when each quote was checked. Fares change over time. A comparison made at different times may reflect changing demand or seat availability as well as any change in fuel costs.
- Look at how charges are presented. In some markets, an airline may show a surcharge separately; major U.S. carriers generally incorporate fuel costs into fares instead. Compare the amount payable, not just the labels used to explain it.
- Use industry forecasts as context, not a personal fare calculator. IATA’s projections describe aggregate industry expectations. They cannot predict the precise increase—or decrease—for a particular airline, route, and date.
What travelers can reasonably expect
When fuel prices rise, ticket prices may rise too, but there is no universal pass-through rate or timetable. The effect can appear in a base fare, a separately itemized surcharge in some markets, optional charges, or changes to the flights an airline operates. A carrier may also absorb some of the shock rather than passing it on in full.
For an individual traveler, the most dependable comparison is the total cost of the same trip, with the same services, checked at a similar time. Fuel is an important part of airline economics, but it is only one input into the price you see.
