The clearest confirmed route to upgrade-related rewards is exploration: Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin says lock-picking and safe-combination puzzles can provide crafting resources, ammunition, upgrades, or even a new weapon. The game’s equipment is built around melee weapons, ranged weapons and abilities using the Genesis Configuration, with inventory management intended to matter throughout play.
What is confirmed about weapon upgrades
The full game contains an arsenal with weapon upgrades. That is stated in the official Steam demo listing, although the listing does not identify individual weapons, upgrade tiers or the size of any improvement. “Upgrade” is therefore a confirmed feature category, not a published specification.

The game’s official FAQ divides combat equipment into three broad groups:
- Melee weapons for close-range encounters.
- Ranged weapons that consume ammunition.
- Genesis Configuration abilities, which provide special capabilities distinct from ordinary weapons.
These categories establish the shape of the arsenal, but they do not show whether every item can be upgraded, whether abilities use the same progression system, or whether upgrades are shared between weapons.

How puzzles connect to upgrade rewards
Vid Rajin describes classic lock-picking mechanisms and safe-combination puzzles as optional sources of useful items. His examples include crafting resources, ammunition, “some nice upgrades” and, in some cases, a new weapon. This makes puzzle-solving an important potential part of resource gathering rather than a purely narrative diversion.
“We have classic lock pick mechanism puzzles as well [such as] safe combinations which reward you with useful items, like crafting resources, ammo, some nice upgrades, or even like a new weapon,” Rajin says.
The wording indicates a reward pool: opening a particular container may produce one of several useful outcomes. It does not establish that every safe contains an upgrade, that a harder puzzle guarantees a better item, or that upgrades are the only reason to search locked spaces.
What to do when you find a lock or safe
- Record the location mentally or on your map. If the game presents a puzzle before you have the required information, returning later may be more efficient than spending scarce supplies nearby.
- Check your inventory before solving it. If you are carrying little ammunition or have room for another item, the reward can affect your next encounter.
- Search the surrounding room after opening it. The confirmed reward examples include resources and weapons, so inspect nearby containers rather than assuming the visible item is the entire payout.
- Decide what to keep immediately. Inventory management is part of the intended experience, and a new weapon may compete for limited space with ammunition or crafting materials.
These steps are practical preparation, not a claim that the game uses a particular map marker, storage box or puzzle-reset rule. Those interface details have not been published.

What kinds of equipment can be upgraded?
Public materials do not provide a complete weapon list or name an upgradeable model. They confirm an arsenal containing melee and ranged weapons, while the Genesis Configuration supplies special abilities. Until an in-game description or a direct developer explanation identifies a target, it is safest to treat “weapon upgrades” as applying to at least some conventional weapons without assuming that every ability or item follows the same rules.
Melee weapons
Hands-on coverage reports melee combat and weapon durability. That establishes that close-range equipment can wear down during play, but no reviewed source says an upgrade increases durability, slows wear or repairs a damaged weapon. Durability and upgrade effects should therefore be tracked as separate systems until the game displays a direct connection.
Ranged weapons
Ranged combat and ammunition management are both reported. An upgrade could theoretically affect a weapon’s handling or output, but no official material gives a damage value, magazine size, reload change, accuracy effect or ammunition discount. Do not choose a ranged weapon on the assumption that one of these benefits exists.
Genesis Configuration abilities
The FAQ confirms abilities connected to the Genesis Configuration. It does not state that these abilities are upgraded through the same interface as weapons, require the same resources or receive numerical improvements. Treat abilities as a separate equipment category unless the game explicitly groups them with weapon upgrades.

Inventory management is part of the upgrade decision
Rajin says inventory management works in a way similar to the Resident Evil games. That comparison signals a constrained-inventory style of play: the value of an upgrade is not only its combat effect, but also the space and ammunition needed to carry and use it. The comparison does not publish a slot count, item dimensions, storage capacity or combine rules.
A disciplined inventory routine can still help:
- Keep enough ammunition for the weapon you are actually carrying instead of spreading space across every category.
- Reserve room when approaching unexplored rooms or puzzle locations, because a reward may be an upgrade, a weapon or crafting material.
- Separate essential healing or survival items from experimental equipment so a new find does not force an emergency discard.
- Read item descriptions before dropping a resource; an item described as a crafting component may be more valuable later than its immediate space cost suggests.
These are general decision rules derived from the confirmed inventory emphasis, not evidence of specific item-combination recipes or a particular storage interface.
What the published information does not tell us
The reviewed official sources leave several central questions unanswered:

How to evaluate an upgrade once you are playing
When the game reveals a specific upgrade, record the information shown on screen rather than relying on assumptions. A useful comparison uses five fields:
- Target: note the exact weapon or ability affected.
- Effect: write the displayed change in plain language, such as a capacity, handling or durability adjustment, if the game states one.
- Cost: list every required material or other expenditure and whether the cost is one-time or recurring.
- Opportunity cost: consider what else those materials could make or repair, and whether the upgrade consumes inventory space.
- Combat fit: match the effect to your habits. A close-range player may value a different improvement from someone who saves ammunition and attacks from distance.
This method avoids declaring an upgrade “best” in the abstract. A small improvement that supports your primary weapon can be more useful than a larger change on equipment you rarely carry, while an ammunition-related benefit may matter more during a resource-starved section than during exploration.

Does an upgrade repair weapon durability?
Not according to any confirmed information currently available. A hands-on guide reports weapon durability, but the reviewed sources do not say that upgrades restore condition, extend a weapon’s lifespan or alter how quickly it degrades. Durability should be monitored independently until an item description or developer statement connects it to an upgrade.

If a weapon is wearing down, use the game’s own repair prompt or resource description when one appears. Do not spend materials on an assumed durability improvement merely because a weapon has a condition meter; the two systems may be unrelated.
Can you obtain upgrades without solving puzzles?
The available information confirms that puzzles can reward upgrades, resources, ammunition or a new weapon. It does not say that puzzles are the only source. The Steam listing confirms upgrades exist in the full game, but does not describe their distribution. A complete answer about alternative sources—such as exploration rewards, progression milestones or crafting—requires an in-game description or a direct source that documents those systems.
What the release information means for guides
Saber Interactive’s FAQ gives October 8, 2026 as the release date and says there are no plans for future downloadable content or content updates. Those are publisher statements that can change, so check the current FAQ if you are making a purchase or planning a long-term playthrough. The same FAQ confirms physical discs for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but edition contents and stock can vary by region.

Neither the release statement nor the physical-format information adds upgrade specifications. They are useful for availability decisions, not for determining which weapon improvement to choose.
A reliable way to avoid upgrade mistakes
- Explore before committing resources. Because locked spaces may contain upgrades or weapons, search available puzzle locations before spending rare materials.
- Read the complete description. Confirm the target, effect and cost from the game’s own text.
- Keep a baseline. Note how the weapon behaves before upgrading so you can tell whether the displayed effect changes the situation you care about.
- Protect ammunition. An upgrade is less useful if it encourages you to carry several incompatible ammunition types and leaves no room for survival items.
- Reassess after major progression. New weapons and Genesis Configuration abilities may change which equipment deserves inventory space.
This process is intentionally conservative because the developers have not published enough numerical detail to support a fixed build order.
Bottom line on Hellraiser: Revival’s upgrade system
Weapon upgrades are confirmed features of the full game, and lock-picking or safe-combination puzzles may award them alongside crafting resources, ammunition and new weapons. The confirmed arsenal includes melee weapons, ranged weapons and Genesis Configuration abilities, with inventory management playing a meaningful role. The upgrade tree, prices, exact effects, interface and relationship to durability remain undisclosed in the public sources reviewed. Until those details appear in the game or in a directly documented update, compare upgrades from their on-screen descriptions and your own combat needs rather than from unverified lists.
