That makes it useful for monitoring nightly backups, syncs, reports and other recurring tasks. It does not make or preserve backup copies, and a successful ping does not prove that a backup can be restored.
What Healthchecks monitors—and what it does not
Healthchecks.io is a heartbeat monitor for scheduled work. Each check has a unique URL; a job requests that URL to report that it has reached a particular point. If the expected signal does not arrive within the configured schedule and grace period, the check becomes overdue and can trigger notifications. The Healthchecks.io documentation describes the service as listening for pings from cron jobs and scheduled tasks.

This is different from an uptime probe that independently requests a website, a system for application performance metrics, or a log aggregator. Healthchecks observes the signals your job sends; it does not inspect the host or the backup data independently.

- Create a check for the job. In Healthchecks, create a check and copy its unique ping URL. Use a separate check for each important job so that an alert identifies which task missed its schedule. Configure a period or cron schedule, a grace time and notification integrations.
- Send the success ping only after the work succeeds. The cron monitoring guide demonstrates running a backup script followed by a ping with shell command chaining:
/home/me/backup.sh && curl .... If the script exits unsuccessfully, the success ping is not sent. - Set a realistic schedule and grace period. Allow for ordinary schedule variation and how long the job takes to run. A grace period that is too short can alert on routine delays; one that is too long postpones notification of a real problem.
- Choose where alerts go. The documentation lists email, webhooks, SMS, chat and incident-management integrations. For important jobs, the cron guide recommends using more than one notification channel.
- Add start or failure signals when useful. A job can report that it started and send a separate success or failure signal. If Healthchecks receives a start signal but no success within the grace period, it can treat the run as failed and alert.
The guide’s sample curl command uses a 10-second request timeout and retries, and its example check has a 30-minute grace period. These are illustrations, not universal settings: choose values appropriate to your network, schedule and task.

How late and down alerts work
Healthchecks uses New, Up, Late, Down and Paused states. When an expected ping is missed, a check first becomes Late. If it remains overdue until the grace period expires, it becomes Down and triggers configured notifications. For a simple hourly schedule, the documentation illustrates a 12:00 success followed by a Late state at 13:00 and a Down state and alert at 13:05 when grace time is five minutes. With a cron schedule, lateness is measured against the next expected wall-clock run time.
Use the grace period to balance prompt detection against nuisance alerts. For a long-running job, consider start and completion signals so that a run that starts but gets stuck is distinguishable from one that never starts.

What a missed ping can reveal
Because the monitored job sends its own success ping, a missing signal can expose several problems: the machine is unavailable, the cron daemon has stopped or is misconfigured, the task exits with an error, or a run takes abnormally long. These are failure modes identified in Healthchecks.io’s cron guide; they are detected through the absent or delayed heartbeat, not through an independent host inspection.

A success ping means the job reached the ping step. It does not establish that every backup file is complete, intact, retained as required or restorable. Keep restore tests, backup verification and storage monitoring as separate controls.

Hosted Healthchecks.io or self-hosting?
The Healthchecks.io homepage says its hosted service lets users monitor 20 cron jobs for free without a credit card. Plan limits can change, so check the current homepage before relying on that allowance.
Healthchecks is open-source, BSD-licensed and can be self-hosted, according to its official FAQ. Self-hosting means taking responsibility for operating the monitoring service, including upgrades, alert delivery, backups and recovery. The FAQ cautions that production-grade monitoring takes ongoing work and says the hosted service may be more reliable and cost-effective for many users.

The FAQ identifies the operator as SIA Monkey See Monkey Do and names Pēteris Caune. It says the service has a database hot standby and daily encrypted S3 backups, while failover is manual and the operations team is one person. Those are the operator’s own descriptions, not an independent audit; the FAQ acknowledges that multi-hour or multi-day outages are possible.
What the operator reports about the service
Healthchecks.io’s About page says its figures were manually updated on October 2, 2026. The numbers below are vendor-published and are not independently verified.

When Healthchecks fits a backup workflow
Healthchecks is useful when you already have a scheduled backup or other job and need to know whether it checked in on time. It complements rather than replaces the tools that create, store and verify backups. Healthchecks’ third-party resources directory lists backup-workflow integrations and examples including backrest, restic-tools, borgmatic and emborg; their presence there does not establish a particular version or current availability.
