Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has said the team chooses its satirical angles carefully because the game’s long development cycle makes topical issues and memes risky targets. That does not mean the game avoids politics altogether; reporting describes political campaign audio as one possible part of its ambient world.
Why Rockstar is cautious about current political references
Nelson told GamesRadar+ that the team must think about how a joke will hold up during a long development cycle: “For us, because we work on such a long development cycle, we have to not jump on stuff and instead choose our angle of approach carefully and decide what things are going to be a bit more timeless.”

He drew a distinction between broad subjects and highly specific references: “I think those broader things are OK to satirize, but very specific political issues or memes will date fast.” The implication is that Rockstar may favor satire aimed at enduring behaviors or social patterns over jokes tied to a particular politician, party, or short-lived online moment. The comments do not identify which subjects the finished game will target.
Politics can appear as part of the world, not just the plot
Careful topical choices do not amount to a promise of a politics-free game. PC Gamer reported that players may hear a political campaign call delivered by a robovoice alongside radio talk shows and advertisements. That is an example of reported ambient world-building, not evidence of a central campaign storyline or a specific candidate or policy appearing in the game.
#1 Best Overall
Rockstar’s writers have described a broader method of turning recognizable reality up to an exaggerated level. Senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries said: “If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face.” Writing director: open world James Horton described environmental dialogue as something players might catch in passing: “It needs to wash over you when you’re sprinting down the busiest street in the city, hearing snatches of a hundred different conversations as you go.” Together, those remarks suggest a world where political or social references can be part of the surrounding noise rather than a direct statement of the game’s plot.
Realism is a tool, not a rule
Nelson has also framed realism as a creative choice made for the player’s experience. He said: “Sometimes drawing an amusing or poignant parallel to some aspect of the real world is helpful in supporting the experience, and sometimes it’s better to ignore or omit certain aspects of reality because they just don’t make sense with the experience we are trying to create.”

- Carry on the Grand Theft Auto tradition playing through the single player campaign as Niko Bellic
- Get cars and other modes of transportation anyway you can
- Interact with various colorful characters who give you various missions to engage in
- Engage in multiplayer challenges ranging from cover matches to shoot-outs
- Carry on the Grand Theft Auto tradition playing through the single player campaign as Niko Bellic
That helps explain why a game can feel recognizably contemporary without reproducing every current political detail. A real-world parallel may add humor or meaning; a reference that distracts, becomes tedious, or loses relevance may not serve the intended experience. Nelson’s remarks do not confirm that any particular event or issue has been included or left out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat Rockstar has confirmed about GTA 6
Rockstar’s official page places GTA VI in Vice City and the fictional state of Leonida, where Jason and Lucia become caught up in a criminal conspiracy. That establishes the setting and broad premise, but the official description does not provide a list of political subjects or explain how individual jokes will work.
Rank #3
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The available reporting therefore supports a limited conclusion: Rockstar has discussed aiming for satire that can last, and reporting has described possible political material in the ambient environment. It does not establish a catalog of references in the final playable game or a plan to satirize named current politicians, parties, or policies.
