GTA 6 has one explicit personal link to GTA 4: Lucia’s official biography says her mother dreamed of a better life “since their days in Liberty City.” Rockstar has not identified her mother as a GTA 4 character or connected Lucia to Niko Bellic. GTA 6 also returns to Vice City, but Rockstar’s published story information presents Jason and Lucia’s crime story as its own—not as a confirmed continuation of GTA 4 or GTA 5.
What is the confirmed connection between GTA 6 and GTA 4?
The clearest link is geographical and comes from Lucia’s past. Rockstar’s official GTA 6 character page says her mother dreamed of a good life “since their days in Liberty City.” Liberty City is the setting associated with GTA 4, whose manual identifies Niko Bellic as its protagonist.

That wording establishes a Liberty City reference in Lucia’s family history. It does not establish that Lucia’s mother appears in GTA 4, that she knew Niko, or that Niko will appear in GTA 6. Rockstar’s published GTA 6 character and story materials do not confirm any of those connections.

The contrast is in the shape of the stories, not a confirmed chain of events. GTA 4 follows Niko; GTA 5 interweaves three characters’ stories; and Rockstar’s GTA 6 summary centers on Jason and Lucia as a couple. Its official story announcement says they have “always known the deck is stacked against them.”

How the games’ settings connect—and where they do not
Liberty City anchors the GTA 4 reference in Lucia’s biography. GTA 5 is set in Los Santos and Blaine County, while GTA 6 takes players to Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Rockstar’s GTA 6 page identifies Vice City as part of Leonida.
Vice City’s return connects GTA 6 to an established place in the franchise, while Liberty City connects it to Lucia’s family backstory. Neither fact, on its own, makes GTA 6 a direct story sequel to GTA 4 or GTA 5. The official material cited here does not establish a plot bridge from Los Santos to Leonida.

Are Niko, Michael, Franklin, or Trevor in GTA 6?
Rockstar’s official GTA 6 materials reviewed here do not confirm appearances by Niko Bellic, Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, or Trevor Philips. That is not proof that none of them can appear; it means a cameo or role in the story should not be treated as confirmed.

What fans mean by the “HD Universe”
A fan-maintained GTA Wiki reference groups GTA 4 and GTA 5 in what fans call the “HD Universe” and discusses GTA 6 in that continuity. That label can help explain fan conversations, but it is not a Rockstar declaration of canon. Rockstar’s published details establish shared franchise locations and Lucia’s Liberty City reference; they do not spell out a complete continuity map linking the three games.

Rockstar’s announced GTA 6 premise introduces Jason and Lucia and their own criminal predicament. The confirmed details above do not make familiarity with Niko, Franklin, Michael, or Trevor a stated prerequisite. Playing earlier games may provide context for returning locations and the series’ different protagonist styles, but the available official story material does not say they are required to follow GTA 6.
