GST on a marketplace order depends on the goods or service being sold and its classification. The seller generally accounts for GST on an ordinary sale; the marketplace may separately collect tax at source (TCS) on qualifying sales when it collects payment. TCS is an operator-side GST mechanism, not a second GST charge to add to your bill.
Is GST charged separately on online shopping in India?
GST applies to the underlying taxable supply at the rate applicable to that particular good or service. Buying through a website or app does not create a universal “online shopping” rate. Rates are organized by product and service classifications in the CBIC’s GST rates reference; the applicable rate for a specific order depends on what is actually supplied and its classification.

Your checkout may show tax as a separate line or include it in the displayed price. Check the tax invoice for the taxable value, rate and tax amount rather than assuming that every marketplace order is taxed at the same rate.
Who pays GST on Amazon, Flipkart or another marketplace?
For an ordinary marketplace sale, the supplier named on the tax invoice is the starting point for questions about GST on the product or service. The supplier’s tax liability is distinct from the marketplace’s possible obligation to collect TCS. Under the GST framework explained in CBIC’s e-commerce FAQ, an electronic commerce operator that collects consideration for qualifying supplies by other suppliers collects TCS on the net value of taxable supplies and accounts for it through the GST system.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
That collection is not an additional GST tax line that a consumer should automatically add to the order total. CBIC’s FAQ pages include time-sensitive rate material; the FAQ on electronic commerce states a 1% TCS rate for the cases it describes, split into 0.5% CGST and 0.5% SGST for intra-State supplies. The FAQ’s rate statement is not established here as the operative rate on 7 October 2026, so verify the current notification before relying on that figure. Whatever rate applies to the operator’s collection, TCS is not a second consumer GST charge.
When the marketplace may itself be liable for a service
There is a limited exception for services specified by notification under section 9(5) of the CGST Act: the operator pays GST as if it were the supplier. This does not make the marketplace liable for GST on every product sold through it. The exception is set out in the CGST Act and CBIC’s e-commerce FAQs. Whether it applies depends on the service category and the relevant notification.

Why is GST added to my online order?
The tax relates to the goods or service supplied, not to the act of shopping online. The order’s taxable value and the applicable classification determine the GST calculation. A marketplace may display tax during checkout, but the invoice is the better record for checking which supplier made the supply and how tax was applied.

Can I get a GST invoice for an online purchase?
Check the order page or contact platform support to locate the tax invoice. An order confirmation or payment receipt may not include every detail required on an invoice. CBIC’s tax-invoice rules list particulars that include the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number and issue date; description; taxable value; tax rate and tax amount; and, for goods, quantity. HSN or accounting code and place-of-supply details are also among the listed particulars, with some details applying according to the transaction.
For a practical check, compare the invoice with the order details:

What happens to GST if I return an online order?
CBIC says returned supplies reduce the net value used in calculating an e-commerce operator’s TCS. That is an operator-side adjustment; it does not specify the exact refund timing or method for every consumer transaction. Keep the platform’s refund record and any credit note or updated invoice so you can see how the return was recorded.

How to compare GST across two marketplace orders
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Goods or service description and classification | The applicable rate depends on the actual supply and its classification, not on the marketplace. See the CBIC rate reference. |
| Supplier on each invoice | The supplier’s tax on the sale is distinct from any TCS collected by the platform. Check the invoice particulars. |
| Taxable value, rate and tax amount | These invoice fields let you check how tax was calculated for each order. |
| Transaction type | Only a service in a notified section 9(5) category may fall under the operator-liability exception; it should not be assumed for marketplace goods. See the CGST Act. |
| Return status | Check whether a credit note or amended invoice records the return and how the platform shows the refund. |
