How greenhouse gases warm the planet: a plain-language guide to the evidence

Greenhouse gases warm the planet by slowing the escape of infrared heat to space. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms Earth’s surface. The surface then emits thermal infrared radiation. Gases such as carbon dioxide absorb some of that radiation and re-emit infrared in all directions, including downward. The surface and atmosphere warm until the energy leaving for space again balances the energy arriving from the Sun.

This natural greenhouse effect makes Earth’s present surface temperature possible. Human activities, especially fossil-fuel burning, have increased concentrations of long-lived greenhouse gases and enhanced the effect. Satellite measurements provide a direct check: NASA reports that Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) observations isolated the effect of rising carbon dioxide on outgoing infrared radiation, in agreement with theoretical predictions.

The energy-flow mechanism, step by step

The greenhouse effect is an energy-budget process, not a layer of hot gas producing heat from nowhere. Earth receives energy from the Sun and must ultimately return an equivalent amount to space. Greenhouse gases alter how that outgoing energy travels through the atmosphere.

Stage What happens Why it matters
1. Solar input Visible and other short-wavelength sunlight enters the atmosphere. Some is reflected; the rest is absorbed by the surface, clouds and atmosphere. This incoming energy is the source that powers the climate system.
2. Surface emission A warmed land or ocean surface emits thermal infrared radiation, whose wavelengths are much longer than most incoming sunlight. Earth can lose energy only by sending radiation back toward space.
3. Absorption and re-emission Greenhouse molecules absorb infrared in characteristic wavelength bands. After absorbing energy, each molecule emits infrared in all directions. Some emitted radiation travels upward, but some travels back toward the surface and lower atmosphere.
4. New balance The surface and atmosphere adjust their temperatures until, averaged over time, outgoing energy again matches absorbed solar energy. Changing greenhouse-gas concentrations changes the altitude and probability at which infrared escapes, so the system must adjust its temperature to restore balance.

The key phrase is in all directions. A molecule does not decide that radiation must go downward; emission is distributed in every direction. Downward infrared adds energy to the surface and lower atmosphere, while upward radiation is part of the eventual pathway to space. Repeated absorption and re-emission make the atmosphere more opaque at selected wavelengths and lengthen the route by which heat escapes.

Why wavelength matters

Earth’s surface does not emit one uniform kind of infrared radiation. It emits a spectrum, and each gas interacts with particular wavelength bands determined by its molecular structure. A gas can therefore matter even when another gas is more abundant, because the gases may absorb different parts of the spectrum.

NASA explains that carbon dioxide absorbs in portions of the infrared where water vapor leaves a partial atmospheric window. Through that window, some surface radiation can otherwise escape relatively efficiently. Adding carbon dioxide reduces some of that heat loss at the affected wavelengths. The result is not that all infrared is trapped; it is that the outgoing flow is altered enough that temperatures must rise until the total energy leaving to space catches up with incoming energy.

Absorption bands can overlap. That means the climatic importance of a gas cannot be inferred from its concentration alone. Its absorption wavelengths, how those bands overlap with other gases, how its concentration changes with altitude, and how long the change persists all matter. The practical question is always how much outgoing energy is changed in the spectrum and over time.

Natural greenhouse effect versus human-enhanced warming

The natural and enhanced greenhouse effects use the same physics but describe different conditions. Natural greenhouse gases have always been part of Earth’s atmosphere. Without them, the surface would lose infrared energy too efficiently and the present climate would be much colder.

Feature Natural greenhouse effect Human enhancement
Physical process Atmospheric gases absorb and re-emit surface infrared radiation. The same absorption and re-emission become stronger at wavelengths affected by added gases.
Climate role Maintains a surface temperature compatible with liquid water and the observed climate system. Reduces some outgoing infrared radiation, creating an energy imbalance until the climate warms enough to restore balance.
Main recent driver Natural atmospheric composition and natural cycles. Primarily human emissions, especially from burning fossil fuels, along with other human-caused changes in greenhouse gases.
Water vapor Part of the naturally occurring greenhouse effect. Acts mainly as a feedback: warming caused by an initial forcing allows the atmosphere to hold more water vapor, which amplifies the initial warming.

Calling the recent change “enhanced” does not mean the natural effect was absent. It means the composition of the atmosphere has shifted away from the natural baseline, changing the balance of infrared energy.

Carbon dioxide and water vapor have different causal roles

Carbon dioxide as an initial forcing

When people burn coal, oil or gas, carbon that was stored underground is converted into carbon dioxide and added to the atmosphere. Increased carbon dioxide changes the outgoing infrared spectrum, including wavelengths in the partial atmospheric window not fully covered by water vapor. That radiative change is an initial forcing: it starts a warming adjustment rather than merely responding to one.

Water vapor as a feedback

Warmer air can contain more water vapor. As an atmosphere warms from another cause, evaporation and moisture transport increase the amount of water vapor present in regions where it can persist. Because water vapor is itself a greenhouse gas, the extra moisture absorbs and re-emits more infrared, amplifying the original warming. NASA describes this as a feedback in the current warming context, not as the initial human trigger.

Why abundance is not the whole story

Water vapor is abundant but strongly controlled by temperature, condensation and circulation. Carbon dioxide is less abundant but long-lived and directly altered by human emissions. Their different persistence and spectral absorption mean that “which gas is most common?” is not the same question as “which change is driving the forcing?” A useful comparison focuses on causal role and wavelength coverage rather than concentration alone.

What changes when greenhouse-gas concentrations rise?

  1. The atmosphere becomes more absorbing at selected wavelengths. Additional molecules increase the chance that an infrared photon in an absorption band will be absorbed before reaching space.
  2. More energy is re-emitted within the Earth system. Absorbing molecules emit in all directions, so a portion of the radiation returns downward instead of escaping directly.
  3. Outgoing energy initially falls below incoming energy. The imbalance is small compared with the total solar flow but persists over time, so energy accumulates in the climate system.
  4. Temperatures adjust. A warmer surface and atmosphere emit more infrared. Changes in humidity, clouds, snow, ice and other parts of the climate system also respond.
  5. A new average balance is reached. Eventually, the increased emission associated with the warmer system restores equality between absorbed sunlight and energy radiated to space, but at a higher temperature.

This sequence explains why the effect is often described as a reduction in heat loss rather than an addition of a new heat source. The Sun continues to supply the original energy; greenhouse gases change the rate and spectral pathways by which that energy leaves.

Direct evidence from satellite observations

What AIRS measured

Infrared satellites can measure radiation leaving the top of the atmosphere at many wavelengths. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reports that data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) were analyzed to isolate the effect of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide on outgoing infrared radiation. The report, dated November 27, 2024, says the observed spectral changes align with theoretical predictions.

That result is a direct observation of a component of the greenhouse mechanism: as carbon dioxide increases, the outgoing infrared signal changes at the wavelengths where carbon dioxide absorbs. It is not an inference based only on surface temperature. Read the method and result in NASA/JPL’s AIRS report.

What this evidence does and does not establish

The AIRS finding directly tests carbon dioxide’s effect on outgoing infrared radiation. It does not, by itself, measure every feedback or attribute every observed climate impact to one mechanism. The broader conclusion about current warming rests on multiple independent observations and physical lines of evidence summarized by NASA in its evidence overview. A sound interpretation keeps the scope of each measurement clear while recognizing that the measurements fit together.

Energy-budget measurements and current indicators

The estimated imbalance

NASA describes an estimated energy imbalance of a little over 0.8 watts per square meter. This is not a reading from one instrument. It is inferred by combining measurements, including satellite observations and ocean-based observations, as explained on NASA’s energy-budget page. The qualification matters: the figure is an estimate of a planetary imbalance assembled from several observing systems, not a single-device measurement at every location.

A dated carbon-dioxide reading

NASA’s Carbon Dioxide — Earth Indicator lists 428 parts per million for August 2026. Parts per million means that, in a sample of one million air molecules, the indicated number is carbon dioxide molecules, expressed as a volume fraction. This is a dated reading, not a permanent constant; the indicator is updated as new observations become available, so a later page view may show a different latest month.

The concentration number is evidence of atmospheric composition, not a stand-alone prediction of a specific temperature change. The climate response also depends on the gas’s absorption spectrum, other greenhouse gases, feedbacks and the time over which the forcing persists.

Why changes in the Sun do not explain the current trend

Solar energy is the ultimate source of Earth’s climate energy, so scientists measure it rather than assume it is constant. NASA’s causes overview states that the evidence shows current warming cannot be explained by changes in the Sun alone. A solar change would affect the incoming side of the energy budget; the observed greenhouse signal is also present on the outgoing side, where carbon dioxide’s wavelength-specific effect is measured.

This distinction is important. Saying greenhouse gases warm the planet does not deny solar variability. It means that the measured recent changes in atmospheric composition and outgoing infrared radiation provide an explanation that solar changes alone cannot supply.

Common misunderstandings, corrected

“Greenhouse gases trap all heat.”

No. They absorb selected infrared wavelengths, and the absorbed energy is re-emitted in all directions. Radiation still escapes to space; the atmosphere changes how efficiently and from where it escapes.

“The greenhouse effect is an artificial phenomenon.”

No. The natural greenhouse effect is necessary for Earth’s present surface temperature. The human-caused problem is the enhancement caused by adding greenhouse gases and changing their concentrations.

“Carbon dioxide cannot matter because it is a small fraction of air.”

Fraction alone does not determine radiative influence. Carbon dioxide absorbs strongly in particular infrared bands, including part of a window where water vapor does not absorb completely. A small concentration change can therefore alter outgoing energy.

“Downward infrared violates the second law of thermodynamics.”

No. Molecules emit in all directions. Downward emission does not mean the atmosphere sends a net flow of heat from cold to hot; the net exchange still depends on the temperatures and radiation fields of the surface and atmosphere. The greenhouse effect changes the net rate at which the Earth system loses energy.

“Water vapor is the original cause of today’s warming.”

Water vapor amplifies warming, but NASA identifies it primarily as a feedback. Its amount changes in response to temperature, whereas added carbon dioxide from human emissions provides an important initial forcing.

How to evaluate a claim about the greenhouse effect

  • Identify the energy flow. Ask whether the claim addresses incoming sunlight, surface infrared emission, atmospheric absorption or outgoing radiation to space.
  • Check the wavelength. A credible explanation states which part of the infrared spectrum is affected and whether another gas already absorbs there.
  • Separate forcing from feedback. Added carbon dioxide and water vapor that increases after warming do not play the same causal role.
  • Look for measurements. Satellite spectra, ocean energy observations and atmospheric composition records test different parts of the explanation.
  • Keep the scope honest. A measurement of carbon dioxide’s effect on outgoing infrared radiation is direct evidence for that component, not a claim that one instrument measures every climate response.

What is the greenhouse effect?

It is the natural process in which atmospheric gases absorb and re-emit some of the infrared radiation emitted by Earth’s warmed surface, slowing the rate of energy loss to space. The climate system warms until outgoing radiation again balances absorbed sunlight. Human emissions strengthen this process by increasing long-lived greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. Water vapor then acts mainly as a feedback that amplifies the initial warming. AIRS satellite observations, energy-budget estimates and broader climate evidence all support this energy-flow explanation.
