GPS satellites stay in their assigned orbits through a continuous ground-based cycle: monitor stations measure their signals, the Master Control Station calculates their state, and ground antennas send commands when operators decide a correction is needed. The same system also manages satellite clocks, navigation data, and constellation health. Orbit corrections are occasional; GPS.gov does not give a universal schedule for them.
What ground control does for GPS
GPS has three segments: satellites in space, the ground control segment, and user equipment such as phones and navigation receivers. Satellites broadcast signals; receivers use those signals to work out position and time. Ground control keeps track of the satellites and their transmissions, analyzes measurements, and sends commands and data back to the constellation. GPS.gov describes the control segment as a worldwide network that tracks satellites, monitors transmissions, performs analyses, and sends commands and data to the constellation (GPS.gov: Control Segment; GPS.gov: GPS).

That work is an ongoing measurement-and-command loop, not a single orbit correction. A satellite can remain in service while the ground segment continues monitoring it, maintaining its clock and navigation information, and responding to its condition.

Monitor stations observe satellites
Monitor stations track satellites as they pass overhead and collect observations from their navigation signals. These include ranging and carrier measurements, as well as atmospheric data. The observations are sent to the control center for analysis. In practical terms, the stations provide measurements from which controllers can assess where satellites are and how their signals and systems are behaving; a monitor station does not itself steer a satellite.

The Master Control Station estimates satellite state
The Master Control Station (MCS) processes observations from the monitor network to estimate and predict satellite state, including location. It also assesses constellation health and generates navigation data and commands. The official technical description lists functions including processing ranging measurements, estimating and predicting satellite state, generating navigation data and commands, processing telemetry, and controlling uploads (GPS SPS Signal Specification, 2nd Edition).
Ground antennas carry commands and data
Ground antennas provide the communication link between the control system and satellites. They send commands and navigation-data uploads to satellites and receive telemetry in return. Telemetry gives controllers information about satellite status; commands can direct an approved action, including an orbit maneuver when needed. The MCS makes the calculations and generates commands, while the antennas carry that information to and from space.

Operators command occasional orbit maneuvers
If the observed or predicted satellite state calls for a correction, operators can command a maneuver to maintain the satellite in its proper orbit. GPS.gov calls these “occasional command maneuvers,” but does not specify a universal interval. The timing depends on the satellite and the control decision, so a fixed claim such as “every few months” is not established by the official overview (GPS.gov: GPS).
Orbit maintenance is only part of the job
Keeping a satellite in its assigned orbit does not by itself ensure that a receiver can use its broadcast information accurately. The control segment also adjusts satellite clocks, uploads updated navigation messages, monitors signal health and system integrity, supports maintenance, and resolves anomalies. These activities help keep both the constellation and the information receivers rely on usable. GPS.gov summarizes the control segment’s role as maintaining satellites in proper orbits through occasional maneuvers and adjusting their clocks; its control-segment overview also describes monitoring, uploads, maintenance, and anomaly response (GPS.gov: GPS; GPS.gov: Control Segment).

How the control elements fit together
| Element | Role in the control loop |
|---|---|
| Monitor stations | Observe satellite signals and collect measurements for the control center. |
| Master Control Station | Processes measurements, estimates and predicts satellite state, monitors health, and generates navigation data and commands. |
| Ground antennas | Transmit commands and navigation uploads to satellites and return telemetry to the ground. |
| Alternate Master Control Station | Provides backup control capability, as described in the GPS Standard Positioning Service Performance Standard. |
The 2020 GPS Standard Positioning Service Performance Standard describes the MCS, backup capability, antenna network, and maintenance roles. Its architectural description is specific to that document; it should not be treated as a reconciliation of current monitor-site totals.

GPS.gov identifies the Architecture Evolution Plan (AEP) as the system currently used to command and control the operational constellation (GPS.gov: Architecture Evolution Plan). GPS.gov describes the Next Generation Operational Control System (OCX) as the future system intended to command modernized and legacy satellites and manage civil and military navigation signals (GPS.gov: Next Generation Operational Control System). That description does not establish an operational transition date, so OCX should not be described as already controlling the operational constellation on that basis.
