GPS collars record an animal’s position at intervals, giving researchers a sequence of locations they can use to study movement, habitat selection and space use without following the animal continuously. But collaring is not disturbance-free: capture, handling and carrying a device can affect an animal. Responsible studies justify the method, use species-appropriate equipment and expert handling, and plan to monitor and remove or release the collar when appropriate.
How a GPS collar records wildlife movement
A tracking package typically combines a positioning device, power supply, antenna and casing with an attachment suited to the animal. That attachment may be a collar, harness, glue mount or another design. The GPS receiver calculates locations from satellite signals, then the device either stores them for retrieval or transmits them periodically—sometimes through satellite telemetry. The schedule determines how often locations are recorded and how much detail researchers can collect; device size and battery capacity also constrain how long it can operate.

Each GPS fix is a position, not an explanation of what the animal was doing or why it moved. Researchers interpret sequences in light of the study question, habitat, field observations and other evidence. Location records can help reveal movement patterns, areas and resources used, dispersal and habitat selection; combined with other evidence, they can contribute to research on behavior, life history and demographics. The Yellowstone Wolf Project, for example, describes combining movement data with observations to investigate wolf ecology (National Park Service report).

Wild animals can be difficult to observe directly. A tracking device lets researchers collect repeated locations over time, including when an animal is out of sight. Those records can help answer questions about where animals travel, which habitats or resources they use, and how their movements relate to management and conservation needs. The snow leopard telemetry guidelines, for instance, identify habitat requirements, movement, space and resource use, thermoregulation, life history and demographics as possible subjects of tracking research.

Collar weight is one practical consideration, but a simple percentage cannot establish that a device is harmless. The Yellowstone Wolf Project report describes collars of about 500 grams—roughly 0.8–1.8% of the wolves’ body mass—as an example for that project, not a universal specification. NSW Department of Primary Industries guidance gives less than 5% of body mass as an ideal general guide for total transmitter weight and specifically states that guidance for transmitters on birds should be less than 5%; it also notes that a larger mass may sometimes be proposed. These are screening considerations, not guarantees of safety or universal legal limits (NSW Animal Research Review Panel Guideline 9).
Why tracking cannot be assumed to be disturbance-free
The device is only one part of the impact. Capture and chemical immobilization can cause stress, injury or death. A poorly fitted collar can abrade or ulcerate skin; one that is too loose may snag or trap a limb or the animal’s mouth. Juveniles need room to grow, and collaring may be inappropriate for some species or life stages. Researchers must assess these risks alongside the value of the information the study is expected to produce.
Movement can also change the forces a device places on an animal. The snow leopard guideline discusses earlier work reporting that a collar equal to 3% of a cheetah’s body weight could exert forces equivalent to 54% of body weight at high speed. That is a specific reported example, not a general effect that can be applied to every species, collar or movement pattern.

How researchers can reduce risk
Responsible tracking starts with the research question, not the device. The method should be justified against alternatives, and the study should be designed to obtain enough useful information to warrant capture and deployment. The following safeguards address key risks identified in the snow leopard guidelines and NSW guidance:
- Use qualified oversight and handlers. Tracking should be planned by experienced researchers, with appropriate ethics review, permits and veterinary support. Rules differ by jurisdiction; NSW guidance says devices should be used only by people with extensive expertise.
- Choose a suitable, light device and attachment. Match the equipment to the species and individual’s size, body shape, behavior and habitat. Account for swimming, den use, vegetation, normal grooming and likely abrasion, and favor a design previously suitable for the same or a similar species.
- Fit for movement and growth. The collar should not constrict the animal or slip into a hazardous position. Account for growth in juveniles, check for fit-related problems and have a response plan if one appears.
- Plan for the end of deployment. A programmable drop-off, breakaway mechanism or other suitable removal plan can prevent a device from remaining attached indefinitely. California’s wildlife agency describes collars that send GPS locations by satellite and can be programmed to drop off after enough data have been gathered and sent (California Department of Fish and Wildlife).
- Protect sensitive location data. Live locations can expose animals to poaching or disturbance, including from tourism. Limit access to people who need the information; the snow leopard guideline specifically warns about the risks of public access.
What evidence says about collar effects
A four-year U.S. Geological Survey study examined modern telemetry collars on 105 horses and 60 burros across five western U.S. populations. It reported no difference in survival between collared and uncollared adult females, or between their foals, in the populations and collar designs studied (USGS, 2024). This is useful evidence for those animals and conditions, but it does not establish that all collar designs are harmless, that every species responds the same way, or that survival captures every possible welfare effect.
More broadly, tracking technologies and their effects vary by device, attachment, species and study conditions. A 2024 review addresses health and environmental effects and best management practices, while a 2025 paper proposes a minimum reporting standard intended to support animal welfare and data quality (Frontiers in Veterinary Science, 2024; Animal Biotelemetry, 2025). Neither a weight ratio nor a favorable result for one study should substitute for species- and deployment-specific assessment.

How researchers choose a tracking setup
There is no universally best collar. The appropriate system depends on what the study needs to learn and on the animal and field conditions. Researchers weigh several linked trade-offs:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Location detail: The sampling schedule must be frequent enough to answer the movement question, while recognizing that more frequent fixes affect power use and data volume.
- Data transfer and terrain: Storing data for later retrieval avoids relying on regular transmission, while remote transfer can make information available without recovering the device. Whether satellite or another link works depends on the system and study area.
- Species and attachment: Body size, neck or body shape, growth, behavior and habitat affect what can be fitted safely and securely.
- Mass, power and duration: Device size, battery capacity, transmission schedule and time in the field must be balanced against the animal’s needs and the study objective.
- Handling and logistics: Capture burden, monitoring, permissions, data security and a plan for drop-off or removal all belong in the design.
Available evidence does not establish a controlled, universal comparison of current systems by accuracy, price or battery life. A researcher must select equipment for a particular study rather than infer a general winner.
