How GPS and Boundary-Free Navigation Work in Robot Lawn Mowers

A boundary-free robot lawn mower replaces the buried perimeter wire with a digital map. You define the mowing area in an app, and the mower combines that virtual boundary with satellite positioning, correction data such as RTK, and model-specific cameras or motion sensors. It can then calculate where it is, stay inside the mapped lawn, and return to its charging station.

“GPS mower” does not describe one accuracy level. Older GPS-assisted systems may be accurate only to several metres, while an RTK system with a suitable correction service can be specified to better than five centimetres under stated conditions. Trees, hedges, buildings, fences and sheds can still block the sky view or degrade the correction link, so the installation and garden layout matter as much as the marketing label.

What “boundary-free” actually means

A conventional robotic mower detects an electrical signal in a perimeter cable installed around the lawn. A boundary-free mower does not sense a buried loop. Instead, its perimeter is a software boundary stored in a digital map. You normally create that map with a companion app, either by driving or walking the mower around the lawn or by defining the area through the app’s mapping workflow.

The map can contain more than an outer edge. Depending on the model, you may draw separate mowing zones, no-go areas around ponds or flower beds, corridors between lawn sections, and paths to a charging station. The mower’s navigation system compares its estimated position with those digital lines and plans a route that remains inside them.

Removing the wire therefore removes one installation job, not every installation requirement. The mower may still need a charging base, a network connection, a satellite-visible position, a reference station or correction subscription, and a carefully checked map.

How positioning works: GNSS, GPS and RTK

GPS is one satellite constellation

GPS is the United States’ Global Positioning System. A mower may also use signals from other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), but “GPS” is often used casually for satellite positioning in general. The receiver estimates its location from the timing of signals arriving from several satellites.

A basic satellite fix is useful for broad navigation but can be too imprecise for a mower expected to follow a narrow virtual edge. Reflections from buildings and tree cover, satellite geometry, atmospheric effects and temporary signal loss all introduce error.

RTK adds correction data

Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning compares the mower’s satellite observations with correction information. The correction source may be a network or cloud service, or a local reference station installed at the property. The system can resolve satellite measurement ambiguities and produce a much more precise position than an uncorrected GPS fix.

Husqvarna describes its EPOS system as using cloud-delivered correction data in selected markets or a local reference station. Its UK information says cloud-supported EPOS is typically better than 5 centimetres and that the correction service is provided at no additional cost when buying an EPOS-enabled mower. Availability, equipment and service terms depend on the exact model and country.

RTK is not a guarantee of perfect positioning. The mower still needs usable satellite signals and a reliable path to correction data. If either is interrupted, the mower may slow, stop, use another sensor to estimate movement, or require a better-sited reference or charging installation.

What the advertised accuracy figures mean

Manufacturer figures describe different systems and conditions, so they should not be combined into a single industry-wide promise.

Claim System and owner How to interpret it
3–5 metres Husqvarna guidance for older X-line mowers using GPS-assisted navigation; undated support information accessed in 2026 This is the stated precision for those older GPS-assisted models. It should not be applied to EPOS mowers.
Typically better than 5 centimetres Husqvarna UK description of EPOS using cloud correction; undated FAQ accessed in 2026 A manufacturer specification for cloud-supported EPOS, with availability limited to selected markets and dependent on suitable conditions.
“A few centimetres” Segway Navimow’s general RTK explanation; undated technology information accessed in 2026 A broad description of RTK capability, not an independent test or a guarantee for every garden.

The practical question is not simply “Does it have GPS?” Ask which positioning method is used, whether RTK correction is included, where the correction comes from, and what the manufacturer specifies when satellite visibility is poor.

How a wire-free mower navigates a mowing job

  1. It loads the digital map. The mower stores the outer virtual boundary, exclusion zones and any zones or corridors you created in the app.
  2. It establishes a position. The GNSS receiver acquires satellite signals. An RTK model also connects to its cloud correction service or local reference station when that equipment is required.
  3. It estimates movement. Wheel rotation, inertial sensors and other onboard measurements help track motion between external position updates. The exact sensor combination is model-specific.
  4. It plans a route. Navigation software chooses mowing tracks inside the mapped area and adjusts for the mower’s width, zone priorities and return-to-base rules.
  5. It checks the environment. Cameras or other sensors may identify grass, lawn edges, obstacles and unexpected objects. Segway Navimow describes visual recognition as a complement to GPS rather than a replacement for it.
  6. It corrects or pauses. When the position estimate drifts, the mower can use new satellite and correction data to realign. If the signal is inadequate, the model may rely temporarily on local sensors, stop, or return to a known location according to its safety logic.
  7. It docks and resumes. After charging or completing a scheduled task, it uses the map and positioning system to leave the station, reach the assigned zone and return when required.

Exact behaviours during a signal gap vary by mower. A camera can help recognize an edge or obstacle, but no manufacturer information establishes that vision will maintain centimetre-level boundary accuracy in every lighting, weather or grass condition.

Why satellite visibility matters in a real garden

Satellite receivers work best with a broad view of the sky. Walls, fences, hedges and sheds can block or reflect signals. Dense tree cover, narrow passages between buildings and covered charging locations can create the same problem. STIGA specifically warns that these structures reduce sky view and limit RTK reliability.

A mower may still work in a partially obstructed garden, but the result can be slower operation, temporary stopping, less precise edge tracking or a need for additional mapping and reference equipment. A garden that looks open from above may contain difficult sections at ground level, such as a side passage under trees or a lawn strip beside a tall wall.

Predictive and fallback features

Some systems attempt to bridge short periods of weak satellite reception. STIGA says its predictive AGS technology predicts and plans around GPS gaps. That is a model-specific strategy, not evidence that all wire-free mowers can ignore obstructions. Treat any fallback as a way to handle limited interruptions, not as permission to install the mower where the sky is permanently blocked.

Setting up a boundary-free mower

1. Check the exact model and region

Before buying or installing, verify the mower’s positioning method, correction route, required connectivity, reference-station requirements and supported lawn layout for your country. Cloud correction may be available only in selected markets. A product page for one model cannot establish compatibility for another.

2. Survey the lawn for sky view

Walk the proposed mowing area and identify high walls, hedges, sheds, tree canopies, covered passages and narrow strips. Pay particular attention to the charging station and any local RTK reference-station location. The best position is usually open to the sky and able to communicate reliably with the mower and the required network.

3. Install the charging and reference equipment

Place the charging station on a stable, accessible surface with enough approach space for the mower to dock. If the system uses a local reference station, install it where the manufacturer’s instructions specify and confirm that it has a clear enough view and power or network connection. Cloud-based EPOS systems may avoid a local reference station but still require the mower to reach the correction service.

4. Create the virtual boundary

Use the companion app’s mapping process to outline the lawn. Keep the mower inside the intended grass area while recording the perimeter, and map separate zones or connecting corridors where the garden is divided. Draw exclusion areas around ponds, gravel, play equipment, delicate beds and other hazards rather than relying on the mower to infer every boundary.

5. Verify the map at problem points

Inspect corners, slopes, lawn edges beside walls, gates and transitions between zones. A line that is safe in the app may be too close to a drop, flower bed or paved edge in the physical garden. Adjust the virtual boundary before scheduling unattended mowing.

6. Run a supervised test

Start with a short mowing session while watching the mower. Confirm that it remains inside the map, recognizes obstacles, reaches each permitted zone and returns to charge. Test the areas where satellite visibility is weakest instead of assuming that an open central lawn represents the whole property.

7. Set schedules and maintenance checks

Only after the supervised run should you enable a regular schedule. Keep the app, mower firmware and correction-service settings current according to the manufacturer. Recheck the map after moving a shed, adding a fence, changing dense planting or relocating the charging station.

How easy is setting up wire free robot mowers compared to perimeter-wire mowers?

Wire-free setup is often quicker because there is no trenching, pegging or repairing a perimeter cable. Mapping in an app also makes it easier to change a zone when the garden layout changes. The trade-off is that the map, satellite view, correction connection and sensor behaviour must all be correct.

Setup consideration Wire-free approach Perimeter-wire approach
Boundary installation Create and edit a software map; no buried perimeter cable Lay and secure a physical cable around the mowing area
Positioning dependency Satellite signals, correction data and model sensors can affect performance Boundary-wire signal defines the edge, though the mower still uses its own navigation sensors
Changing the lawn Usually edit the virtual map in the app Move, extend or repair physical cable
Typical failure concern Obstructed sky, lost correction link, mapping error or unsuitable connectivity Cut, disconnected or incorrectly placed cable
Extra equipment May require a cloud service, connectivity kit or local RTK reference station, depending on model Usually requires the wire and its boundary transmitter

Neither method is automatically easier for every property. A simple open lawn may be fast to map with RTK. A garden with heavy obstructions may make a physical boundary more predictable, while a frequently redesigned garden may benefit from software boundaries.

GPS-only, RTK and hybrid navigation compared

GPS-assisted navigation

Basic GPS-assisted navigation can help a mower plan broadly and record its location, but metre-scale error is too large for reliably holding a narrow virtual edge. Husqvarna’s 3–5 metre figure for older X-line GPS-assisted mowers illustrates why the label “GPS” is not an accuracy specification by itself.

GNSS with RTK

RTK is designed for high-precision positioning by adding correction data. It is the approach associated with centimetre-level manufacturer claims, but it depends on satellite visibility and a correction path. A local reference station can add installation work; a cloud service can reduce local hardware but may be restricted by market coverage and connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hybrid satellite and vision systems

Hybrid systems combine GPS or RTK-GPS with cameras and other sensors. Vision can help classify grass, detect obstacles or recognize an edge when satellite data is temporarily less useful. It does not remove the need to map the lawn or guarantee performance in darkness, glare, rain, dense vegetation or every unusual boundary condition.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely causes What to check
The mower stops or reports weak positioning Blocked sky view, reflections, lost correction data or a poorly placed station Move the station or reference equipment to a more open location, check network access and test the obstructed section separately.
It cuts outside the intended edge Boundary recorded too close to the lawn edge, map drift or an inaccurate position fix Pause unattended schedules, review the virtual line in the app and remap the edge with a safe margin.
One zone is unreachable No mapped corridor, an exclusion area blocking access or a physical gate too narrow for the mower Inspect zone connections and corridor settings, then confirm the mower can physically pass between areas.
It repeatedly loses its route beside a wall or hedge Obstructed satellite view and signal reflections Check whether the model supports that passage, improve reference-station placement and avoid assuming that vision will provide a permanent substitute.
The mower cannot dock reliably Charging station approach is blocked, the station was moved, or its mapped position no longer matches reality Clear the approach, restore a stable station position and update the map or calibration as instructed for the model.

What to compare before choosing a wire-free mower

  • Positioning label: distinguish ordinary GPS-assisted navigation from GNSS-RTK and identify the correction method.
  • Correction coverage: determine whether cloud or network corrections are available in your country, whether they require a subscription or connectivity, and whether a local reference station is needed.
  • Sky visibility: assess trees, hedges, walls, fences, sheds and covered passages across the entire lawn, not just near the centre.
  • Perception sensors: check whether cameras or other sensors supplement satellite positioning, and read what the maker says happens during signal gaps.
  • Mapping tools: confirm that the app supports multiple zones, no-go areas, corridors and later boundary edits if your garden needs them.
  • Installation limits: verify charging-base placement, reference equipment, network requirements and the supported slope or passage dimensions for the exact model.
  • Safety validation: look for obstacle detection and supervised-test guidance, then keep hazards out of the mapped area even when the mower advertises vision-based recognition.

The bottom line for GPS and boundary-free navigation

A wire-free robot mower knows where to mow because software maps the lawn and positioning systems estimate the mower’s location relative to that map. Satellite navigation supplies the global reference; RTK correction can refine it to centimetre-level claims; cameras, inertial sensors and other onboard systems can help with obstacles and short periods of poor reception.

The decisive qualification is that performance is model- and site-specific. Husqvarna’s 3–5 metre figure for older GPS-assisted models is not interchangeable with its typically better-than-5-centimetre EPOS claim, and Segway Navimow’s “few centimetres” description is a general RTK explanation rather than an independent garden test. Before treating boundary-free as a simpler installation, check the correction route, sky visibility, mapping features and fallback behaviour for the exact mower and your property.
