After you aim the projector, connect it to Wi-Fi, and sign in with a Google account, you can open supported apps on the projector itself. Subscriptions, internet access, app certification, and regional availability still apply. If the projector lacks the apps or smart platform you want, an HDMI streaming device is another option, provided the projector has a compatible HDMI input and power arrangement.
What Google TV does on a portable projector
On a compatible model, Google TV is the projector’s operating system for streaming. The projector displays the interface, runs the installed apps, receives remote-control commands, and sends the selected video to its own imaging hardware. You do not need a separate television for the basic streaming setup.

The first-run process is similar to setting up Google TV on a television: position the projector, connect it to a wireless network, sign in, and open an app. TCL’s C1 instructions also describe automatic focus, keystone correction, and screen alignment during setup. Once those adjustments finish, you can navigate the app catalog with the remote or start playback from a supported phone.

How to set up Google TV on a portable projector
- Place and aim the projector. Put it on a stable surface or its integrated stand, point the lens at the wall or screen, and leave space for ventilation. The distance from the lens determines the image size, so do not assume every model can produce a large picture from the same position.
- Power the projector. Connect its adapter or charge the internal battery. Battery playback estimates are made under stated conditions and can be shorter at high brightness, with louder speakers, or while charging other devices.
- Complete focus and geometry adjustments. Allow autofocus, automatic keystone, and screen-alignment features to run when offered. If the picture is still soft or skewed, use the manual focus and keystone controls rather than moving the projector repeatedly.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Choose your network and enter its password. Streaming apps need internet access to sign in, verify subscriptions, load catalogs, and play video.
- Sign in to Google TV. Use a Google account when prompted. TCL states that an internet connection, a Google account, and applicable subscriptions are required for streaming services on its C1.
- Open or install a supported app. Search the projector’s app catalog, install the service, and sign in with that service’s account. The catalog shown on the projector is more useful than a generic list of apps because availability can differ by country and can change over time.
- Play a title or cast from a phone. Use the projector’s app for on-device playback, or select the Cast control in a compatible mobile app when both devices are on the same network.
Built-in apps and phone casting are different
Using built-in apps
With a built-in app, the projector performs the streaming session itself. The remote controls browsing and playback, and the projector’s Google TV software handles the account, service connection, and video output. Your phone is not required after setup.
Using Google Cast
Casting lets a supported phone, tablet, or computer tell the projector what to play. TCL’s C1 and PlayCube documentation, along with specifications for models such as the Dangbei Freedo, identify Google Cast or Chromecast support. Cast support is model-specific, so verify that feature on the exact product page rather than assuming every Google TV projector includes it.
Casting is not a way around a subscription, geographic restriction, or internet connection. The receiving projector still needs network access, and the service can require you to be signed in. Some apps may offer a Cast button while others may not, depending on their own support and regional rules.

Do you need a separate Chromecast or streaming stick?
Not if the projector already contains the apps and controls you need. Built-in Google TV can replace a separate streaming box for supported services and reduces the number of devices, remotes, and power connections in a portable setup.
An external streamer is useful when the projector has no suitable smart platform, its app catalog is incomplete, or you prefer the interface and update policy of a separate device. Google’s Google TV Streamer (4K), for example, connects over HDMI. The projector must have a compatible HDMI input, and the streamer needs its own power and internet connection.
An HDMI streamer does not upgrade the projector’s native display hardware. If the projector is 1080p, attaching a 4K streamer does not turn its lens or imaging chip into a 4K system; the projector’s resolution and capabilities determine what can actually be shown. The same principle applies to HDR support, refresh rates, audio output, and copy-protection compatibility.

What works without Wi-Fi?
Google TV’s interface can usually open without an active network, but online streaming services cannot be treated as fully offline features. You generally need internet access to complete account setup, authenticate services, browse current catalogs, and play online video.
Offline viewing depends on the individual service and its app. If an app supports downloads, those downloads are normally made on a separate phone or tablet under the service’s rules; the projector’s built-in app may not provide the same download feature. You can also connect a local source through USB or HDMI when the projector supports the relevant file format or device, but that is separate from Google TV streaming and does not guarantee playback of every file.
Portable Google TV projector specifications compared
The following products illustrate how much the hardware can vary. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements, and the brightness figures use the manufacturers’ stated ISO-lumen ratings. ISO-lumen numbers should not be treated as directly equivalent to figures measured under a different rating system.
| Model | Google TV and casting | Resolution and published brightness | Battery claim | Image range and connectivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TCL C1 | Google TV; Netflix certification; Google Cast | Native 1080p; 230 ISO lumens | Not stated in the cited specification | 40–120 inches; Wi-Fi 5; Bluetooth 5.1; USB; HDMI |
| TCL PlayCube (P3) | Google TV; Chromecast casting | 1080p; 750 ISO lumens | 66 Wh; rated for 3 hours of playback | 30–150 inches; HDMI; USB |
| XGIMI MoGo 4 | Google TV with licensed Netflix | 1080p; 450 ISO lumens | 71.28 Wh; up to 2.5 hours of video playback | HDMI ARC; USB; USB-C PD charging; Wi-Fi 5; Bluetooth 5.1 |
| Dangbei Freedo | Google TV; Google Cast; apps listed include Netflix and YouTube | Not stated in the cited specification | About 60 Wh; 2.5 hours in Eco mode | HDMI ARC; USB; Wi-Fi 5; Bluetooth 5.1 |
| ViewSonic M1MaxN | Built-in Google TV | 1080p; brightness figure not stated in the cited description | Integrated battery; runtime not stated in the cited description | Sub-1 kg; 360-degree stand |
The PlayCube’s US product page displayed it as sold out when reviewed, so its listed specifications should not be read as a statement of current stock. Battery figures are also not interchangeable: the PlayCube’s three-hour figure, the MoGo 4’s up-to-2.5-hour figure, and the Freedo’s 2.5-hour estimate use different product conditions, and the Freedo figure is specifically for Eco mode.
Brightness, picture size, and placement matter more than the app logo
Brightness
Projector brightness determines how well the image survives room light. TCL describes the C1 as best suited to dim or dark rooms, which is a practical warning for any low-brightness portable model. A higher published number can help, but it does not describe black level, contrast, color accuracy, or how the manufacturer measured the figure. Compare numbers only when the rating method and units match.

Resolution
Native 1080p models in the examples can display a 1920-by-1080 image without scaling the panel to that resolution. A streaming source with a higher output can still be accepted by some projectors, but the visible result remains limited by the projector’s native imaging hardware.

Image size and throw distance
A stated 30–150-inch or 40–120-inch range is not a promise that every size will look equally bright. Enlarging the image spreads the available light over a larger area. Check the model’s throw ratio, minimum focus distance, and recommended placement before planning a backyard, bedroom, or travel setup.
Automatic adjustments
Autofocus and automatic keystone correction make temporary placement easier, while a gimbal or 360-degree stand can change the aiming angle without a separate tripod. Digital keystone correction can reduce the active image area, so physically aligning the lens with the screen is preferable when practical.
Battery life, sound, and ports in a travel setup
Portable models trade some brightness and runtime for a smaller enclosure. A battery capacity stated in watt-hours describes stored energy, not guaranteed viewing time. Brightness mode, speaker volume, wireless activity, ambient temperature, and battery age all affect the result. Treat an “up to” runtime as a ceiling under the maker’s test conditions rather than a standard movie-night guarantee.
HDMI is important if you might add a console, laptop, disc player, or external streamer. HDMI ARC can send audio to a compatible soundbar or receiver on models that provide it. USB may play local media or power an accessory, but the port’s supported formats and power output differ. USB-C power delivery on the MoGo 4 can simplify charging from compatible supplies; it does not mean every USB-C charger will provide the required wattage.
Bluetooth 5.1 can connect headphones, speakers, or other accessories on models that support those profiles. Wireless specifications do not by themselves guarantee a particular range or low-latency experience. If synchronized dialogue matters, check the projector’s audio settings and the accessory’s codec support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.App catalogs and regional limits
Google TV is a platform, not a guarantee that every service is available everywhere. TCL warns that app and feature availability can vary by country and may change. ViewSonic specifically notes that Disney+ availability varies by country. Netflix certification is called out for the C1 and MoGo 4, while the Freedo listing names Netflix and YouTube; those statements apply to the cited models and do not establish universal support for every projector.

Before purchase, select your country on the manufacturer’s site if that option exists, then check the exact model’s app list and certification notes. Also confirm whether the service requires a separate subscription, whether parental controls work as expected, and whether the app is installed from the projector’s official catalog rather than a third-party workaround.
A practical buying and setup checklist
- Streaming: confirm built-in Google TV, the services you actually use, and Netflix certification if Netflix is essential.
- Casting: look specifically for Google Cast or Chromecast support; do not infer it solely from the words “smart projector.”
- Room: match the published brightness and image-size range to your planned lighting and throw distance.
- Power: compare watt-hours and the test mode behind each runtime claim, and decide whether mains power will be available.
- Connections: verify HDMI, ARC, USB, Wi-Fi generation, Bluetooth, and USB-C charging if those ports affect your accessories.
- Positioning: check autofocus, keystone, screen alignment, stand or gimbal design, weight, and ventilation requirements.
- Region: confirm the app catalog, service licensing, and availability for the country where the projector will be used.
- Fallback: if the built-in software is unsuitable, make sure an external HDMI streamer can receive power and fit the projector’s input.
Common problems and fixes
The projector cannot find Wi-Fi
Move closer to the router, re-enter the password, and restart both devices. If the projector supports only a particular Wi-Fi band or channel arrangement, use a compatible network or hotspot. A phone hotspot can provide temporary access, but mobile-data limits and signal quality still apply.
An app is missing
Check the projector’s country setting and app store, then consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support page. The absence may reflect regional licensing or certification rather than a network fault. An HDMI streamer can be a workaround if the projector accepts its video signal.
Casting does not appear
Put the phone and projector on the same local network, update the relevant app, and confirm that the model lists Google Cast. Guest networks often isolate devices, preventing discovery. Casting availability can also vary by app.
The picture is dim
Reduce ambient light, use a smaller image, clean the lens according to the manual, and select a brighter picture mode if battery use allows. Do not compare an ISO-lumen claim directly with a number measured by another standard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe battery ends before the film
Lower brightness and speaker volume, use an energy-saving mode when available, and start with a full charge. Compare your experience with the maker’s stated test conditions; the published runtime is not a universal movie-length guarantee.
Bottom line
A portable projector with Google TV can stream directly once it has Wi-Fi, a Google account, and the required service subscriptions. Google Cast may let you send compatible content from a phone, but it is a separate, model-dependent feature. An HDMI streamer remains a useful fallback for projectors with suitable inputs. The decisive checks are not the Google TV label alone: verify regional app support, native resolution, brightness rating, battery conditions, image-size limits, ports, and placement features for the exact model.
