When Face Groups is enabled, it detects faces, converts face images into numerical models, estimates which faces look alike, and places likely matches into groups. You can name, correct, merge, or remove items from those groups. Google says the results are not perfect, and the feature may also use clues such as nearby capture times or matching clothing.
People and pet grouping appears in the People & pets area, where availability and controls vary by country, account type, and app version. Labels and groups are private to your account by default. Google also says that face models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions, so the setting deserves the same privacy attention as any other automated analysis of your library.

What Face Groups does inside Google Photos
Google describes Face Groups as a three-stage process. The service first detects whether an image contains a face. If Face Groups is turned on, it creates a numerical face model for the detected image, compares models to estimate similarity, and predicts whether faces in different photos are likely to belong to the same person. Photos then places very similar faces into a group.

There is no published accuracy percentage or false-match rate in Google Photos Help for this feature. Google explicitly says groups are not perfect and provides tools for correcting them. A group can therefore contain a stranger, a relative, or a different person who happens to look similar, while a genuine match can be missed.

Why a photo without a clear face can still be grouped
Google says grouping may use more than the visible face. Its help documentation gives two examples: photos taken close together in time and the same clothing appearing across photos when a face is not visible. These are published examples, not a complete description of every signal used by the system.
Those clues should not be read as proof that Google identifies someone from clothing alone. They are supporting context that may help Photos keep related images together. Google does not disclose the weighting of these signals, the similarity cutoffs, or the internal model design, so no one can infer a precise rule such as a fixed time window or a particular clothing color threshold.
How pet recognition fits into People & pets
The product groups people and pets in the People & pets experience. Google’s cited feature documentation explains face detection and face models, but it does not provide a separate technical account of how animal recognition works. It is therefore safest to treat pet grouping as a product feature without assuming that it uses exactly the same process as human face grouping.

You can control pet grouping separately. The Show pets with people option determines whether pets appear alongside people in the People & pets experience. Turning that option off is different from turning off Face Groups for people.
What you can do with a group
Give a person or pet a name
Open People & pets, select a group, and add a name or nickname when the app offers the labeling control. A label makes the group useful in search. Google’s examples include searches such as “Alice and me laughing” and “Emma at the playground.” Name-based searches require that the person or pet have a label first.
A label is an account-level organization aid, not a public profile. Google says face labels are not shared across accounts, even when photos are shared.

Merge duplicate groups
If Photos creates two groups for the same person or pet, use the merge control in the People & pets experience. Merging consolidates the group’s items under one label. Review the resulting group afterward, because a merge combines the contents of both groups and may bring an incorrect match along with them.

Open the group, select the photo or video that does not belong, and choose the option to remove it from the group. Removing an item from a group does not delete the original photo or video from your library. It changes the grouping result only.
Change a photo’s person or pet label
Google’s Android instructions include a control for changing the person or pet associated with a photo. The exact control name and placement can vary by app surface, so look for the person or pet information attached to the photo and choose the change or correction action rather than deleting the image.

How to enable, disable, or adjust the feature
Labels and menu names can change, and Google says the route differs between platforms. Use the current Google Photos settings on your device if the wording is not identical to the paths below.
On a computer
- Open Google Photos and open Settings.
- Find the face-grouping preference labeled Group similar faces or equivalent wording.
- Turn the feature on or off, then read the confirmation carefully before accepting a change.
On Android
- Open Google Photos and tap your account picture or initials.
- Open Photos settings, then Privacy. Google also documents an alternate route through Preferences on some versions.
- Open the Face Groups control and choose the setting you want.
- To manage pets separately, use Show pets with people.
Google says that switching off Face Groups deletes the face groups, face models, and labels. Treat that as a data-removal action, not merely a pause button. The setting also governs the grouping system itself; it is not the same as hiding a face from a particular display.

Google Photos has a separate control for showing less of a face in the featured Memories carousel. That control changes what appears in Memories. It does not disable Face Groups, remove face models, or erase labels.

Privacy, sharing, and retention
Who can see groups and labels
Google says face groups and labels are visible only to the account owner by default. They are not shared when you share photos, and face labels are not shared across accounts. Sharing an image therefore does not give the recipient access to your People & pets organization.
Biometric-data warning
Google says enabling Face Groups means you want face models to be made and that those models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is Google’s characterization, not a universal legal conclusion. Whether a particular law applies depends on your location, account context, and other facts.
What deletion does
Google states that deleting an individual photo or video deletes face models derived specifically from that media. If you turn off Face Groups, Google says the groups, models, and labels are deleted. Google also says all Face Groups content is deleted if you do not use Google Photos for more than two years. The two-year condition is a retention policy threshold, not a claim about recognition performance.

Face Groups is not available in every geographic region, domain, or account type. If the People & pets section is absent, Google lists several possible explanations:
- Face Groups is not offered for your region, domain, or account.
- The Face Groups setting is turned off.
- No groups have been created yet.
Check the privacy or face-grouping setting first. If it is enabled and the feature is still absent, availability restrictions may be the reason rather than a problem with your library.
A practical way to keep groups accurate
- Enable the feature only if the organization benefit is worth the privacy trade-off. Face models and labels are created when Face Groups is enabled.
- Wait for groups to appear, then inspect them. Do not assume that the first grouping is correct.
- Label only the groups you recognize. A label enables name-based searches, so an incorrect label can make later searches misleading.
- Remove wrong photos and videos from each group. This corrects organization without deleting the underlying media.
- Merge duplicate groups carefully. Review both groups before combining them.
- Use the Memories control when the issue is presentation. If you only want fewer appearances in Memories, hide the face there instead of disabling Face Groups.
- Turn off Face Groups when you want the models and labels removed. Google says disabling it deletes that content.
Limits you should expect
- There is no official accuracy or false-match percentage to use as a guarantee.
- Google does not publish the algorithm’s architecture, thresholds, or complete list of signals in the cited help pages.
- Pet recognition has no separately documented technical explanation in those pages.
- Availability and menu paths can differ by country, account type, platform, and app version.
- Corrections improve your organization, but they should not be treated as evidence that the system has learned an infallible identity.
The useful mental model is a private, editable prediction system: Photos proposes likely people and pets, then gives you controls to name and correct those proposals. It is designed to make a large library searchable, not to provide a certified identity record.
