How Google Maps Uses Your Location and Activity to Personalize Recommendations

Google Maps personalization is not controlled by one “location history” switch. Maps can use your current location to make a response relevant, while separate account settings govern saved Maps searches and directions, Timeline visits and routes, Search history, and contributions such as reviews or saved lists. Which data is used depends on the feature, your settings, country, device and Google’s changing account-controls rollout.

What Google Maps uses to personalize recommendations

Google says its Maps AI-powered features use data including your location to provide relevant responses. If you ask for places, trip ideas or other assistance, the feature may use the location associated with the request so the answer fits where you are or the area you are asking about. Depending on the feature and your history settings, location can also be stored with the interaction. See Google’s explanation of how AI-powered features use data in Maps.

Personalized AI responses can use additional information when Personalized Recommendations is available and enabled. Google lists Maps searches and directions, past Ask Maps conversations when Maps history is saved, saved lists and labels, reviews, ratings and photos, Search history, and information from connected Google content apps. These inputs are different from the phone’s live location permission and from Timeline’s record of visits and routes.

That distinction matters. Allowing Maps to use your current location can make a single answer more relevant without creating a complete historical record of everywhere you have been. Conversely, turning off Timeline does not automatically disable every other activity setting that can retain location-related information.

The four data streams you need to distinguish

Data stream What it can contain How it affects Maps Important control limit
Maps activity or Search Services History Maps searches, directions, selected place views, shared place links, calls to places and Ask Maps conversations. Search Services History can also save activity and associated information, such as location, across Search services. Saved searches, directions and Ask Maps conversations can inform more relevant experiences and, where available, personalized Maps AI responses. Reviewing or deleting Maps history does not remove Timeline visits or every other kind of Maps content. Google is moving these controls, so labels can differ.
Timeline Visits, routes and precise device-location records. Estimates can draw on GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, and sensor information. Lets you revisit where you have been and can support experiences such as recommendations based on frequently visited places. Timeline is off by default. It is a separate control from other account activity settings, and data may remain on another eligible device.
Web & App Activity and Search history Searches and activity from Google services. Depending on settings, associated information can include a general area or an IP-derived location. Supports customized experiences across Google products. Search history can tailor Maps AI responses when personalization is available and turned on. During the Search services settings rollout, this setting may still control history and personalized recommendations for an account.
Saved contributions and connected data Saved lists and labels, reviews, ratings, photos, edits, feedback and information from connected Google content apps. Can provide context for personalized place suggestions and AI responses. Deleting Maps history does not delete these items. They must be reviewed separately.

The categories overlap in purpose but not in scope. A search for a restaurant, a saved “want to go” list, a Timeline visit and a review are separate records with separate deletion paths.

Does Google Maps track your location?

Maps can use location in at least three different ways:

  • Current-use location: A Maps feature can use the location supplied with a request to return a nearby or otherwise relevant answer. This is about making the response useful at that moment.
  • Location associated with activity: Depending on the feature and history settings, location can be stored alongside Maps or AI interactions. Maps history and Search Services History can retain activity and associated information.
  • Timeline location: When Timeline is enabled, precise device location is regularly saved on each eligible signed-in device, including at times when Google apps are not being used. Google says Timeline is off by default.

These uses are not interchangeable. Disabling Timeline does not prove that no location information is saved anywhere in your Google Account. Search Services History or Web & App Activity may still retain activity and information such as a general area or IP-derived location. Likewise, allowing a Maps response to use your current location is not the same as enabling a long-term visit history.

How Maps activity and AI personalization work

Searches, directions and place interactions

Maps activity can include the places you search for, routes you request, selected place views, links you share and calls you make to places. If history is saved, those records can help Google provide more relevant experiences across its services. They can also be inputs to personalized Maps AI features where the feature and account support them.

Ask Maps conversations

Past Ask Maps conversations may be used for personalization when Maps history is saved and Personalized Recommendations is enabled where available. This does not mean every conversation is always used: Google describes the feature as dependent on settings and availability.

Saved lists, labels and contributions

A saved list, custom label, rating, review or photo communicates a different kind of preference from a one-time search. Google says these items, along with information from connected Google content apps, can help tailor personalized AI responses. Removing search history therefore does not erase the preferences represented by your lists, labels or public contributions.

What Timeline saves and why it is separate

Timeline is Google’s record of visits and routes. When you turn it on, precise location is regularly saved on each eligible signed-in device. Location estimates can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi and mobile networks, and sensor signals. Google says an encrypted backup to its servers is optional; otherwise Timeline data can be stored on the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Timeline can help you look back at places you visited and may support personalized Google experiences, including recommendations based on frequently visited locations. It is an opt-in control: Google’s Timeline help states, “Timeline is off by default.”

Device scope is important. Timeline data may exist on more than one eligible device. Pausing or deleting Timeline on one device does not necessarily remove copies held on other eligible devices, and it does not automatically remove location information saved through Search Services History or Web & App Activity.

Why turning off Timeline does not stop every location-related record

Timeline is only one account control. Search Services History and Web & App Activity can continue to save searches, service activity and associated information according to their own settings. Google describes examples such as a general area or location inferred from an IP address. Those records are not the same as Timeline’s precise visit-and-route history, but they can still influence customized experiences.

For that reason, a privacy check should include Timeline, Maps history or Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and the saved content that you deliberately created. There is no evidence in Google’s help pages that switching off one setting universally disables every use or retention of location across Google services.

How to review and reduce Maps personalization

The names and placement of controls are changing as Google rolls out new Search services settings. If an option below is absent, use the corresponding account-activity control instead; Google says Web & App Activity may still govern history and personalized recommendations during the transition.

  1. Check Personalized Recommendations. In Maps or your Google Account, open the personalization or data-controls area and look for Personalized Recommendations. If the option is available, read which Maps activity and connected content it can use, then turn it on or off according to your preference.
  2. Review Maps history or Search Services History. Open the Maps history control shown for your account. Inspect searches, directions, place interactions and Ask Maps activity. Pause collection, delete selected items or use the available automatic-deletion choice if offered.
  3. Inspect Timeline separately. Open Google Account Timeline controls, check whether Timeline is enabled on each eligible device, and review backup settings. Turn it off, edit visits or delete Timeline data if you do not want a visit-and-route record.
  4. Check Web & App Activity. In Google Account activity controls, review whether Search and other service activity is being saved and whether associated location information is included. Change the setting or delete activity as needed.
  5. Audit saved content. Review saved lists, labels, reviews, ratings, photos, edits, feedback reports and connected Google content apps. Remove items individually when you no longer want them to provide personalization context.

Google’s account-controls page says, “You can change these settings and view or delete your saved activity at any time.” The exact screens can vary by country, device, account and rollout stage; an option shown in one account may not yet appear in another.

How to delete Google Maps history correctly

Use the Maps history deletion control or the Search Services History control that your account presents. Before deleting, decide whether you need a single item removed, a date range cleared or the entire available history removed. Deletion can affect future personalization because the activity is no longer available for tailoring once Google has removed it from the experience.

Deletion is not necessarily instantaneous or universal. Google says it first aims to remove activity from view, after which it may no longer be used to tailor the experience, and then begins a process intended to delete it from storage systems. Some information may be retained for limited business or legal purposes. Google documents this process in Manage your Maps history.

Maps history deletion does not delete:

  • Timeline visits and routes;
  • related searches or website clicks stored through another activity setting;
  • saved lists and labels;
  • reviews, ratings, photos, edits or feedback reports; or
  • other Maps data not associated with the account or not covered by the selected deletion action.

After deleting Maps history, separately inspect Timeline and Web & App Activity if your goal is to reduce location-related retention more broadly.

Why your Maps settings may look different

Google says Search services settings are being rolled out gradually. Some accounts may show Personalized Recommendations or Maps-specific history controls, while others may continue to use Web & App Activity for history and recommendations. Availability also varies by country and feature.

This explains why instructions or screenshots can disagree without either being universally wrong. Use the controls actually displayed in your signed-in account, and read the description beside each switch to identify whether it governs Maps activity, Timeline, Search activity or only a particular feature.

A practical privacy decision framework

If you want nearby answers but no long-term visit history

Allow Maps to use current location when needed, but leave Timeline off. Then review Maps history and Web & App Activity, because those settings can still save searches or associated location information.

If you want personalized recommendations with less historical data

Keep only the activity that provides value. For example, review Personalized Recommendations and Maps history, delete old searches, and remove saved lists or contributions that no longer represent your preferences. Remember that deleting one category does not remove the others.

If you want the broadest reduction in account-based personalization

Review all four streams: Personalized Recommendations, Maps or Search Services History, Timeline and Web & App Activity. Then inspect saved lists, labels, reviews, photos and connected apps. This is a settings-by-settings process, not a single master switch.

What Google’s documentation does not establish

Google’s help pages describe categories of data, controls and deletion behavior, but they do not provide a universal percentage for how many people enable personalization, a measured improvement in recommendation accuracy or a guaranteed deletion-completion time. Feature behavior can differ by country, device, account and rollout stage. Those limits are why a setting should be understood by its stated scope rather than treated as proof that every location record has been removed.
