Google Maps does not publish a complete formula for recommending or ordering places. Its current public explanation says local results are mainly shaped by relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews matter because Google says review count and positive ratings can help a business’s prominence, but neither a high star rating nor a large review total guarantees the top position.
That distinction matters: for a normal search such as “Italian restaurant,” Google is publicly describing a ranked set of local results. It has not disclosed a score that lets anyone calculate exactly how each review, photo or Local Guide action changes a listing’s position.

What Google Maps means by “recommend”
When you search for a nearby service, shop or restaurant, Maps matches businesses and places to your query, estimates which are close enough to be useful, and orders the eligible results. Google calls these local results. The company says its detailed algorithm is confidential, so public documentation supports an explanation of the main factors, not a reverse-engineered ranking equation.
Recommendations can also appear in other Maps surfaces, such as place suggestions or discovery features. The official material available for local ranking does not establish that every surface uses the same signals or that every review is scored in a known, personalized way. Treat the three published factors as the reliable framework for ordinary local search.

The three published factors behind local results
| Factor | What Google says it means | How reviews and contributions fit |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well a Business Profile matches what the person searched for. | Accurate categories, services, names and descriptions help Google understand a match. Review content can describe an experience, but Google has not published a separate ranking weight for review wording. |
| Distance | How far a place is from the searcher, or from the location Google knows when the search does not have a precise position. | Reviews cannot cancel out physical distance. A well-reviewed business may appear lower than a closer alternative. |
| Prominence | How well-known a business or place is. | Google explicitly says review count and positive ratings can help prominence. It does not publish their weights or a threshold that guarantees a particular position. |
Google describes these factors as working together. A business can be highly relevant but too far away, close but a poor match, or prominent yet less suitable for the exact query. The result is therefore not a simple “highest rating wins” list.
Relevance: matching the words and intent
For a search such as “vegan bakery,” a profile that clearly represents a bakery and offers vegan products is a stronger match than a highly rated general café. Complete, accurate business information gives Google more reliable material for deciding what a place is and what it offers. The search wording, selected category and the information on the Business Profile all affect this matching process.
Distance: the searcher’s location changes the list
Maps may use the device location, an area named in the query or another location signal. Two people can enter the same words and receive different orders because they are in different places. Moving the map, searching a named neighborhood or changing the location context can therefore change which businesses appear first without any review being added or removed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Prominence: public recognition, including reviews
Prominence is Google’s term for how established or well-known a place appears. The company specifically lists review count and positive ratings as signals that can help this factor. That is an explicit statement about a group of signals, not a promise that a five-star business will outrank every competitor. Google does not disclose whether a particular review is worth a fixed amount, how much recency matters, or how many reviews are enough.
What reviews actually contribute
Ratings and review volume
A star rating summarizes customers’ opinions, while the number of reviews indicates how much public feedback a place has accumulated. Google says both positive ratings and review count can help local ranking through prominence. The statement does not establish a formula for averaging them, nor does it say that one new review produces a predictable movement.

Review count is also not the same as review quality. A listing with many short comments may provide less useful detail to a reader than one with fewer, specific accounts. Google’s public ranking guidance still stops short of assigning independent ranking effects to length, sentiment, keywords or freshness.
Written detail helps people preview a place
Google’s Local Guides guidance encourages authentic, detailed descriptions of concrete parts of a visit: the setting and design, atmosphere, what was ordered, selection, price range, service, and both good and bad aspects. This makes a review more useful to someone deciding whether to visit. It is guidance about helpful, real-world content; it is not a published recipe saying that each listed detail receives a ranking boost.
Reviews are public, voluntary and moderated
Google Maps Help says, “Your reviews and opinions are voluntary. We don’t pay reviewers to add reviews to Google Maps.” Reviews are displayed publicly, subject to Google’s policies, and may be removed when they violate those policies.
Google’s Places API policy makes a related distinction: “Reviews aren’t verified by Google, but Google checks for and removes fake content when it’s identified.” In other words, publication does not mean Google has independently confirmed that every claim is true. Automated systems, reports and other checks can identify policy violations, but no public statement promises that every deceptive review will be caught.
Local contributions are broader than reviews
People can contribute to Maps in several ways. Google says this user-generated content helps people preview and explore places and helps keep map information closer to the real world. The public guidance does not say that every contribution type is an independent local-ranking signal.

| Star ratings and written reviews | Describe an experience and summarize satisfaction. | Google says review count and positive ratings can help prominence; exact weights are not stated. |
| Photos and videos | Show the setting, products, access, atmosphere or current condition. | They help people preview a place. A separate direct ranking effect is not stated. |
| Answers to place questions | Provide practical details that may not fit the profile, such as accessibility or amenities. | Google has not published an independent ranking role for answers. |
| Edits to place details | Correct names, categories, hours, addresses and other facts. | Accurate information can improve Google’s understanding of relevance; a guaranteed ranking boost is not stated. |
| Adding missing places or roads | Fills gaps in the map so people can find and navigate to locations. | Contribution value is established for map quality, not as a disclosed ranking weight. |
| Fact checks | Confirm or challenge information already shown on Maps. | They support data quality. Google does not publish a separate local-result score for them. |
Google’s community rules prohibit fake edits, copied photos, off-topic answers, and unnecessary or incorrect changes. Contributions should be authentic and reflect the contributor’s real-world experience or knowledge.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Local Guides points are rewards, not ranking points
Google awards points for contributions through its Local Guides program. A current Google Maps Help page lists these values: 10 points per review, a 10-point bonus for a review longer than 200 characters, 1 point per rating, 5 points per photo, 7 points per video and 5 points per edit. These numbers describe program points and badges, not the prominence of a business or the position of a contributor’s review.
Contributor level therefore cannot be treated as a public ranking multiplier. Google’s published materials do not say that a review from a higher-level Local Guide automatically moves a place upward.
Why one business appears above another
Suppose two restaurants are nearby. One has a higher rating, while the other more closely matches the query and is slightly nearer. Google’s three-factor explanation allows the second restaurant to appear first: relevance and distance can outweigh a difference in rating or review count. If the query changes from “Italian restaurant” to “late-night pasta,” the order may change again because the match has changed.
- Check the exact query. A broad search and a specific service search do not ask Maps the same question.
- Check the location context. Your current position, a named neighborhood and the visible map area can produce different distance calculations.
- Compare profile completeness. Categories, services, hours and address details help Google interpret relevance.
- Read prominence signals in context. Review count and positive ratings can help, but they are only part of the combined result.
- Expect variation. Google does not publish fixed weights, so a small change in location, query or available data can change the order.
What this means for someone choosing a place
Use the ranking as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Open the profile, check current hours and address, inspect recent photos, and read several detailed reviews instead of relying on the star average alone. Look for agreement between the profile and the experiences described by customers. A review can be useful evidence for a decision even though it is not a verified statement from Google.

When comparing places, keep the three published dimensions in mind:
- Query match: Does the business actually offer what you searched for?
- Practical distance: Is it close to your real destination, not merely close to the map center?
- Public prominence: How much review history and positive feedback does it have, and how consistent are the detailed experiences?
Do not assume that review recency, reviewer status, photo count, response behavior or a particular phrase in a review has a known independent effect. Google has not documented those roles in its public local-ranking explanation.

Keep the Business Profile complete and accurate
Google says complete and accurate information can help it understand a business’s relevance. Maintain the correct name, category, address, hours, services and other factual details. Accuracy is also important for customers who rely on Maps for directions or opening times.
Earn authentic customer feedback
Let customers describe their real experiences. Google’s policies require user-generated content to be helpful and grounded in the real world. Do not manufacture reviews, copy text, upload someone else’s photos or add edits that are unnecessary or wrong.

Handle replies without overstating their effect
Google says replies show that a business values feedback and can help it stand out to customers. The same guidance lists review count and ratings under prominence, but it does not confirm that replying to reviews is a direct ranking signal. Reply because it helps customers and resolves issues, not because a specific ranking increase is promised.
Do not solicit Local Guides
Google’s Local Guides guidance expressly prohibits businesses from soliciting Local Guides. Ask for honest feedback from customers in a policy-compliant way, without offering rewards for a positive rating or targeting people because of their Local Guide status.
What Google has not disclosed
The current public documentation does not provide:
- Exact weights for relevance, distance or prominence.
- A rating threshold that guarantees a top result.
- A separately measured ranking effect for review text, sentiment or recency.
- A confirmed direct ranking value for photos, videos, answers, edits, fact checks or reviewer level.
- A public method for calculating how one contribution changes a listing’s position.
Claims that present any of these as settled facts go beyond Google’s published explanation. The safest interpretation is to use the named factors and treat other theories as unconfirmed.

The historical Hotpot example
A Google Lat Long post dated December 3, 2010 described Hotpot as a local recommendation engine using ratings from users and their friends. It said signed-in users who enabled Hotpot could receive personalized recommendations and that Hotpot could affect organic local search ranking.
Hotpot is a historical product description, not evidence that today’s Google Maps applies the same friend-based mechanism. Current local-ranking guidance centers on relevance, distance and prominence and does not publish a comparable friend-rating formula.
Bottom line for readers and businesses
Google Maps orders ordinary local results using a combination of how well a place matches the query, how far it is from the relevant location and how prominent it appears. Google explicitly says that review count and positive ratings can support prominence. Reviews and other contributions also help people understand places and improve map information, while moderation removes identified policy violations. Beyond those points, Google keeps the detailed algorithm private: there is no public scorecard that converts every review, photo or Local Guide action into a predictable ranking change.
