The visible score is the average of all ratings published for that restaurant on Google, using a one-to-five-star scale. A new review can take up to two weeks to be reflected in the displayed score. The order in which written reviews appear, the review snippets Google highlights, and the restaurant’s position in local search are separate systems.
That distinction matters whether you are choosing where to eat, trying to understand a missing review, or managing a restaurant profile. Here is what Google documents, what it does not disclose, and how to interpret each signal without reading more into it than the evidence supports.

What the restaurant star score actually measures
Google defines a place’s review score as the average of all ratings published on Google for that place or business. The scale runs from one to five stars, with five as the highest rating. It is an aggregate of published rating values, not a score assigned by an editor and not a direct prediction of how every diner will experience the restaurant.

Google says a newly submitted review may take up to two weeks to affect the displayed score. A diner can therefore see a review on a listing while the headline rating still appears unchanged. The delay is an operational window from Google’s help guidance, not a guarantee that every update will take exactly fourteen days.
Rating average and review count are different signals
The star average tells you the central rating value Google reports. The review count tells you how many ratings Google reports for that place. A 4.8 average based on a small number of ratings and a 4.5 average based on a much larger set describe different amounts of evidence, even though neither number guarantees a particular meal.
Use the count as context rather than as a quality score. Google’s published guidance does not say that a specific count makes an average reliable, nor does it establish a formula that converts count into a confidence rating.
How written reviews and ratings are posted
A contributor can give a restaurant a star rating and optionally add written comments, photographs or other Maps content. Google states that reviews are public: anyone can find what a contributor adds. They are not anonymous. Depending on what the contributor has shared, other people may see the profile name, other Maps photos and videos, location information attached to those contributions, and additional Maps reviews.
Google describes reviews and opinions as voluntary contributions and says it does not pay reviewers. A reviewer should therefore treat a post as a public account from an identifiable Maps profile, not as a private message to the restaurant.
Editing or removing your own review
The person who wrote a review can edit its text, rating or included pictures, and can remove the review. Those changes alter the contribution associated with that account; they are not the same as a restaurant owner deleting a customer’s post. Google may also remove content when it violates policy.

Because a reviewer can change a rating after publication, the set of ratings contributing to the average can change over time even without a new customer. A displayed score may consequently move after an edit, subject to Google’s processing time.
Why the first review you see may not be the newest or highest-rated
The documented score formula does not explain the ordering of individual review cards. Google’s cited help pages do not publish the complete algorithm that decides which written review appears first or which review is featured most prominently. Do not assume that the top card is the newest review, the highest rating, the most useful review or a randomly selected one.
Look at the date, star value and substance of each review you open. The position of a card on your screen is not evidence that Google has endorsed its conclusion.
Why a Google Maps restaurant review is delayed or missing
A review that is not visible immediately does not, by itself, prove that the restaurant suppressed it or that Google deliberately censored it. Google lists several ordinary explanations.
Policy checks can take a few days
Google moderates reviews and related user content. A new contribution can be held while automated or other policy checks run, and Google says those checks may take a few days. Content that violates policy can be removed. Google says it does not reinstate reviews removed for policy violations.
A recently merged Business Profile can temporarily split the history
When Business Profiles are recently merged, Google says it can take a few days for reviews from both profiles to appear together. During that interval, the listing may show an incomplete-looking review history even though the reviews have not necessarily been discarded.

Older phones or software can interfere with submission
Google also identifies older devices or software as a possible reason someone has trouble submitting a review. If the review never successfully reaches Google, it cannot enter the published average or appear on the listing.
A practical check for diners
- Confirm that the review was submitted to the intended restaurant profile, especially if nearby venues have similar names.
- Wait through the stated processing window rather than assuming the absence is intentional.
- Check whether the text, images or wording could trigger a policy review, without concluding that a particular policy was violated unless Google tells you so.
- Update the Maps app and operating system if the submission failed on an older device, then try again only if the original review was not posted.
- If the restaurant profile was recently merged or moved, allow several days for the combined history to display.
These checks address the causes Google lists; they cannot identify which cause applies to a specific missing review without information from Google.
What restaurant owners can and cannot do
Verifying the profile is required to reply
A business must verify its Business Profile before it can respond publicly to reviews. Once verified, the owner can post a reply beneath the customer’s review. Google reviews replies for policy compliance before they are published.

An approved reply appears publicly as a response from the business, directly under the customer’s review. Google notifies the customer, and that customer can still edit the original review afterward. Google says reply review usually takes up to ten minutes, but in some cases it can take up to thirty days.
Reporting a review is not the same as deleting it
An owner cannot directly delete someone else’s review. If the owner believes a contribution violates Google’s content policies, the documented route is to report it for Google to assess. The outcome depends on that policy process, so a report is not a promise of removal and a business should not tell customers that a negative review will definitely disappear.
Policy-based removal is different from disagreement. A review can be unfavorable yet remain published if it does not violate the relevant rules. Conversely, a positive-sounding post can be removed if it contains prohibited material.

Soliciting reviews without distorting them
Google allows businesses to remind customers to leave a review, including by sharing a Google review link or QR code. The request must leave the customer free to describe a genuine experience.
Offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review is prohibited. Google classifies that practice as fake and misleading content. A restaurant should not condition a reward on a five-star rating, ask only happy customers to post, or pay for deletion of criticism. Those tactics can compromise the listing and the credibility of its review history.

How review snippets and Place Topics are formed
Google may display short review snippets or “Place Topics” that surface recurring words, phrases and themes in the written reviews. Google says these selections are algorithmic and that Place Topics appear for businesses with a sufficient amount of quality reviews. The cited guidance does not state a numeric minimum, so there is no published review-count threshold you can use to predict when a topic will appear.
Snippets and topics are summaries of language, not an additional star-rating calculation. Their presentation can vary by device, platform, language or location. A topic such as “outdoor seating” or “spicy noodles” indicates recurring discussion, but it does not establish that every visit will include that feature or that Google has independently verified the claim.
Reviews from sources outside Google
On some Business Profiles, Google may show customer reviews from trusted non-Google sources. This is not universal: not every restaurant listing includes third-party material. When such content appears, inspect the source label or surrounding context on the listing so you know which comments were collected outside Google’s own review system.

Customer photo updates can show new products, seasonal menus or changed hours and can help a diner judge whether older written descriptions are still relevant. Google says these photo updates do not affect the review score. A newly uploaded menu photograph therefore cannot raise or lower the restaurant’s star average by itself.
Do restaurant ratings determine local search ranking?
No. A restaurant’s star score and its position in Google’s local results are related signals, but they are not the same measure and one does not guarantee the other.
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence:
- Relevance is how well the listing matches what someone searched for.
- Distance is how near the business is to the searcher or the location used in the search.
- Prominence reflects how well-known Google considers the business to be. Google says prominence may draw on factors such as links from websites, review volume and positive ratings.
A high average can contribute to prominence, but it cannot override a poor match for the query or a large distance from the searcher. A nearby restaurant with a lower score may appear above a farther restaurant with a higher score for a particular search. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Do not promise that reaching a particular star value will put a restaurant in a specific Maps position. Ranking can change with the search wording, the searcher’s location and other factors that are not represented by the visible average.
How to compare restaurants using Maps without overreading the numbers
Use several distinct signals rather than treating the headline star value as a verdict. This framework keeps each signal in its proper role.

A useful reading sequence
- Check the restaurant name, address and category to ensure you are evaluating the correct listing.
- Read the average and count together, treating them as summary context rather than a guarantee.
- Open several recent written reviews, including both favorable and critical accounts, and look for concrete details.
- Check recurring topics or snippets when Google provides them, while noting that their availability and wording can vary.
- Review current customer photos for menu or hours changes, remembering that they do not alter the score.
- Consider distance and the purpose of your search separately from review quality; a ranking position is not a substitute for your own comparison.
What Google’s published guidance does not reveal
The official material explains the average-score formula, moderation possibilities, owner replies and broad local-ranking factors. It does not publish the complete algorithm for ordering individual review cards. It also does not provide a numeric minimum for Place Topics or review snippets, and it does not state that one signal predicts a particular diner’s experience.
Those limits are useful when interpreting a listing. You can describe what the score represents and why a review may be delayed, but you cannot infer from a card’s position that it was selected because it is the most recent or most trustworthy. You also cannot convert a star average into a guaranteed Maps rank or a guaranteed outcome at the restaurant.
A concise decision rule for diners and owners
Diners should treat the star score as an average, use written reviews and recurring themes for context, and allow for processing delays before concluding that a contribution is missing. Owners should verify their profile, reply professionally, report suspected policy violations rather than attempting direct deletion, and ask for genuine reviews without incentives. In both cases, keep rating arithmetic, review presentation and local search ranking separate: Google documents them as connected but distinct parts of Maps.
