How Google Maps Estimates Arrival Times and Chooses Routes

Google Maps calculates an ETA by combining current traffic, historical traffic patterns and machine-learning predictions about conditions later in your journey. It predicts travel times for connected stretches of road, compares those predictions across candidate routes, and displays a recommended route plus alternatives. During navigation, new traffic, crashes, closures, weather and other disruptions can change both the ETA and the route.

Google has described parts of this system publicly, including a Graph Neural Network (GNN) approach documented with Google DeepMind in September 2020. Google does not publish a complete, current formula for how every route is ranked, so the explanation below separates what Maps documents from what remains an internal implementation detail.

How does Google Maps know the ETA?

Maps does not simply measure the distance to your destination and divide it by a speed limit. It estimates how long each part of the trip is likely to take, including traffic you have not reached yet. The core inputs are:

  • Live conditions: aggregated, anonymized location information from people navigating helps Google estimate current speeds and congestion.
  • Historical patterns: Maps has learned how traffic usually behaves on particular roads at different times and days.
  • Predictions: machine-learning models combine the current situation with those historical patterns to forecast conditions farther along the route.
  • Route context: road connections, speed limits, road quality, incidents, closures and other network information affect predicted travel time.

Johann Lau, a Google Maps product manager, described the process this way in a September 3, 2020 post: “We then combine this database of historical traffic patterns with live traffic conditions, using machine learning to generate predictions based on both sets of data.” (Google, September 3, 2020)

That is why a route can have a longer ETA than its free-flow driving time even when traffic is light at your current location: a slowdown expected 20 minutes ahead is part of the estimate.

The ETA process, step by step

1. Maps observes the road network

When people use Google Maps navigation, aggregated location signals can indicate how quickly traffic is moving on a road. Google says this information helps determine current traffic conditions, rather than providing a complete forecast by itself. Navigation may also use GPS location, details about the route taken and device-sensor data. Google explains the categories on its navigation-data page: How navigation data makes Maps better for everyone.

The result is a continually changing picture of speeds and congestion. A road with many slow-moving devices may be represented as congested; a road with sparse data has less direct observation and relies more heavily on other signals and historical behavior.

2. It matches the road and time to historical behavior

Traffic is not random. The same segment can behave very differently during a weekday morning, a Saturday afternoon or a public holiday. Maps analyzes historical patterns, including differences between morning and afternoon traffic on the same road. Historical information supplies a baseline for places where live reports are incomplete and helps the model anticipate recurring bottlenecks.

3. Machine learning predicts what you will encounter later

Maps combines the live snapshot with the historical baseline to forecast the next portions of a trip. Google and DeepMind say the model must account for changing rush-hour timing, road quality, speed limits, accidents and closures. A prediction can therefore rise or fall even when your present road segment has not changed.

4. Travel time is predicted across connected segments

Instead of treating every road section as an isolated line, the published 2020 system grouped connected stretches into units called Supersegments. A model predicted travel time for each unit while considering how traffic conditions propagate through the network. Those predictions were then combined to estimate the time for a complete candidate route.

5. Candidate routes are compared

The routing system generates possible paths, and predicted travel times become a key input when Maps ranks them. The public technical description does not disclose the complete present-day objective or every tie-breaker used for ranking. It is therefore accurate to say that predicted ETA strongly informs route comparison, not that ETA is the only factor.

6. The estimate is refreshed while you drive

During navigation, new observations and incident information can update the forecast. Google says navigation data can support real-time traffic information, disruptions, weather conditions and faster alternative routes. A route that was best at departure can become slower after an accident or a newly detected queue.

What the 2020 Graph Neural Network explanation tells us

Google DeepMind’s September 3, 2020 technical account describes a route analyser that transforms traffic information into Supersegments and a Graph Neural Network that predicts travel time for each one. A graph model is suitable for roads because each segment is connected to neighboring segments: a queue on one link can affect the next link, an interchange or a downstream exit.

The model was optimized with multiple objectives rather than a single “drive as fast as possible” target. DeepMind’s account says the resulting predictions were used with candidate routes from the Maps routing system to rank routes and surface them in Maps products. Read the technical description here: Google DeepMind, “Traffic prediction with advanced Graph Neural Networks” (September 3, 2020).

This is a dated public description, not a guarantee that every production component in 2026 is unchanged. Google and DeepMind reported that predictions had been consistently accurate for over 97% of trips before the improvements discussed in that 2020 material, and that inaccurate ETAs fell by up to 50% in some locations including Berlin, Jakarta, São Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo and Washington, D.C. Those are company-reported results with a stated date and scope; they are not an accuracy promise for an individual journey.

Why the “best” route is not always the shortest

The blue route is the selected or recommended option when alternatives are shown; gray lines represent alternatives. Google’s directions help says each route displays an estimated travel time, and you can tap an alternate route to use it. Route choice depends on more than the fewest miles. The visible comparison can include:

Factor How it affects what you see
Estimated travel time Predicted time under the selected departure conditions; this is a major route-comparison input.
Distance A shorter path can still have a higher ETA if it contains slower or more congested roads.
Current and expected traffic Live congestion and forecast conditions can favor a longer road with steadier movement.
Departure or arrival time Changing when you travel changes the traffic forecast used for the estimate.
Preferences Options such as avoiding tolls or motorways remove or deprioritize roads that conflict with your setting.
Travel mode Driving, walking, cycling, public transport and other modes use different networks, schedules and constraints.

Google’s public pages do not provide the complete current ranking formula, so a route that appears slower or longer may reflect preferences, mode-specific constraints or factors that are not exposed in the interface.

How to compare routes in the Google Maps app

  1. Open Google Maps and enter your destination in the search box.
  2. Tap Directions, then choose the travel mode you intend to use.
  3. Review the displayed route times and distances. The selected route is blue; alternatives are gray when available.
  4. Tap an alternate route to select it and inspect its ETA.
  5. Open the route-options menu when you need to avoid tolls, motorways or another supported road type. Availability and labels can vary by platform and region.
  6. Start navigation only after checking that the selected mode, departure timing and route preferences match your trip.

These controls let you choose among the options Maps exposes. They do not reveal or directly edit the internal traffic model or its complete ranking objective.

How to plan around a different departure or arrival time

Google Maps supports planning around a specified departure or arrival time in supported versions and regions. Google’s consumer help describes this feature for finding a route based on estimated traffic and, where relevant, public-transport schedules; the cited help limits the feature to a single destination.

  1. Enter one destination and tap Directions.
  2. Choose your travel mode.
  3. Open the menu for departure or arrival options, then select Depart at or Arrive by.
  4. Set the date and time and review the resulting route estimates.

Because traffic forecasts are time-dependent, an 8:00 a.m. estimate and a 10:00 a.m. estimate can differ substantially on the same road. Interface names and availability can vary by device, country and account.

Does Google Maps use live traffic or historical traffic?

It uses both. Live traffic describes what is happening now; historical patterns help predict what is likely to happen later. Live data alone cannot tell Maps whether a queue will clear, spread or recur at the time you reach it, while historical data alone cannot capture today’s crash or unusual event.

For developers using Google’s Routes API, Google distinguishes historical-traffic estimates from traffic-aware preferences that consider live traffic. Its documentation recommends traffic-aware settings for near-future departures: Set the level of traffic data. The consumer app and the API have different controls and guarantees, so an API configuration should not be treated as a full description of the phone app’s internal settings.

Why did Google Maps change my route?

A route can change when the information used to predict it changes. Common triggers include:

  • a newly detected slowdown or rapidly growing queue;
  • a crash, road closure, construction restriction or severe-weather disruption;
  • an alternative becoming faster after accounting for traffic farther ahead;
  • a change in your driving position, missed turn or selected destination;
  • a change to toll, motorway or other route preferences;
  • new information arriving as your phone continues navigation.

Maps may offer a faster alternative during navigation. You can accept the suggestion or continue on the current route when the app allows it. A reroute is not proof that the original route was calculated incorrectly; it reflects a new comparison using updated conditions.

How reliable are Google Maps ETAs?

An ETA is a forecast, not a guarantee. It is most informative when the road network has normal levels of observation and conditions resemble patterns the model has seen. Reliability can be reduced by sudden incidents, unusual events, sparse traffic data, rapidly changing weather, temporary restrictions or exceptional disruptions.

Google reported that more than 1 billion kilometers were driven with Maps each day across more than 220 countries and territories in 2020. That scale helps provide broad observations, but it does not make every road equally well observed. Google also reported up to a 50% decrease in worldwide traffic when lockdowns began in early 2020; that example illustrates how an extraordinary change can break normal historical patterns rather than describing current traffic.

Use the displayed time as a planning estimate, add a personal buffer when lateness matters, and recheck the route before departure for an important trip. Do not treat the dated “over 97%” or “up to 50%” figures as a guaranteed probability for your own journey.

What data is used during navigation?

Google says navigation data can include GPS location, navigation details such as the route taken and device-sensor data. Aggregated information can help provide traffic, disruption and weather-related features and faster alternatives. The details of collection, retention and controls depend on your account and device settings; consult Google’s current explanation at How navigation data makes Maps better for everyone.

Turning navigation off stops the active turn-by-turn session, but it does not turn the routing system into a static map: route estimates shown before navigation can still be based on available traffic and historical information. Review the privacy and location controls on your own device if you need to change what is shared.

Practical ways to get a better estimate

  • Set the correct travel mode before comparing routes.
  • Use a departure or arrival time that matches when you will actually travel.
  • Check whether toll or motorway avoidance is enabled unintentionally.
  • Look at both ETA and distance instead of assuming the shortest line is fastest.
  • Allow the app to receive current location information during navigation so it can match your position to the route.
  • Expect a new ETA after an incident, closure or major weather change.
  • For a critical appointment, leave additional time beyond the displayed forecast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Maps predict traffic before I leave?

Yes. It combines historical traffic patterns with current conditions and machine-learning predictions for the time and roads you are expected to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Google Maps always choose the fastest route?

No complete current ranking formula is public. Predicted travel time is a key input, but travel mode, distance, toll or motorway preferences and other routing constraints can affect the selected route.

Why is a longer route sometimes faster?

A longer route may have less congestion or more predictable movement, producing a lower predicted ETA than a shorter but slower route.

Can I trust the ETA exactly?

No. It is a forecast that can change with crashes, closures, weather, unusual traffic and newly received navigation data.
