Google Discover is a personalized feed, not a fixed list of search results. Google says it uses information from your device and other Google products, along with Google Account data, activity, settings, feedback, and location-related signals, to select updates it thinks may interest you. You can change the feed by following topics, liking or hiding stories, managing interests, and adjusting personalized recommendations.
Google does not publish the exact ranking weights or a complete explanation for why a particular story appeared for one person. The most accurate answer is therefore a map of the signals and controls Google documents—not a guaranteed formula for earning or avoiding a specific card.

What Google Discover is—and what it is not
Discover is Google’s recommendation feed for people who want updates about their interests without entering a search query. It can appear in the Google app, on mobile Google.com, and on some device home screens. Availability and controls vary by language, country, region, device and account settings; Google’s current Discover help documentation describes the supported locations and options.
Search generally starts with a query and returns results for that query. Discover starts with a user’s interests and presents a changing set of cards. A card can be useful even when you have not searched for its topic recently. That difference matters: a story’s presence in Discover is not proof that it ranked first for a particular search term, and an absence is not proof that Google considers the story low quality.

Which information Google says can influence your feed
Google publicly names broad categories of information rather than a numerical scoring recipe. The categories below are possible inputs, not a promise that every signal is collected or used for every person or every card.
| Signal category | Examples Google gives | What it can change |
|---|---|---|
| Account and saved activity | Search history, clicked Search results or ads, saved interests, likes and preferences, and activity on Google sites and apps | Which subjects Google associates with your interests |
| Discover feedback | Stories or topics you like or dislike, and sources or subjects you hide | Future recommendations and exclusions |
| Device and product context | Information from your device and other Google products; app and contact information are listed as examples in Google’s help | Context about how and where the feed is being used |
| Personalization settings | Google Account settings, Personalized recommendations, and related activity controls | Whether and how saved activity is used for recommendations |
| Location-related information | Home location, or an estimate such as an IP-address-based location when a home location is unavailable; Location History when Web & App Activity is on | Local or geographically relevant updates |
| Language and localization | Language, country and regional context | Which versions of topics and publishers are relevant in your area |
Google’s explanation is deliberately qualified. Its Discover documentation says the service uses information from a user’s device and other Google products, and that data stored in the Google Account can be used according to settings the user can change or turn off. The page lists examples such as Search Services History, app and contact information from devices, Personalized recommendations and Location History when Web & App Activity is enabled.
How previous activity and feedback become recommendations
Search and browsing-related activity
A separate Google explanation, How Search works with your activity, says recommendations—including Discover web pages—can be based on saved Search history, Search results or ads you clicked, and Discover content you marked as liked or disliked. This supports a simple interpretation: actions that show interest can help Google understand what subjects to offer later.
Recommended Free Tools
It does not establish a fixed multiplier for a search, a click or a like. Google does not say that one search guarantees a card, that a click guarantees more stories from the same publisher, or that a dislike permanently removes every related subject. Treat those actions as feedback, not commands.

Google’s broader recommendation settings
Google’s Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search services page gives broader context. It describes possible use of profile information, saved likes and preferences, activity on Google sites and apps, and associated general location. It also notes that results can differ for reasons beyond personalization, including language and localization. That page helps explain account-level recommendation controls; it is not a published Discover ranking formula.
Device, product and location context
Device information can provide context about the Google products and settings available on the device. Location can make a subject locally relevant: Google says updates may use a home location or estimate location from another source, such as an IP address, if a home location is unavailable. Location History is one example Google lists when Web & App Activity is on. These statements identify possible data sources, not a guarantee that a precise location was used for an individual card.
Controls you can use to shape Discover
Google documents several ways to tell Discover what you want. Labels and menu paths can change as the Google app and account settings are updated, and some controls are unavailable in particular languages or countries. Use the wording currently shown in your app or on mobile Google.com.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFollow or unfollow a topic
- Open Discover in the Google app or on mobile Google.com.
- Find a card or topic you want to see more often.
- Use the card’s topic control, usually labelled Follow or similar, to add it to your interests.
- To stop receiving that topic, open the same interest control and choose Unfollow.
Following expresses an interest; it does not guarantee that every future story about the topic will appear.

Like a story
- Open the options or feedback control on a Discover card.
- Choose the like or positive-feedback option shown by your version of the interface.
- Continue using the feed normally so the preference can be considered alongside other signals.
A like is feedback about the recommendation. It is not a public endorsement and does not guarantee more cards from that publisher.
Hide a topic, source or individual card
- Open the three-dot or feedback menu on the card.
- Choose the option to hide the story, topic or source, according to what your interface offers.
- If the choice is too broad or was accidental, open Manage interests and review the topics and sources you have hidden.
Hiding a source is different from hiding one story: read the wording carefully before confirming.
Turn personalized recommendations off
- Open your Google Account or Search personalization settings.
- Find Personalized recommendations or the equivalent recommendation control.
- Turn the setting off and review the confirmation and any choices about saved activity.
Google says current settings are being updated and that availability differs by language and region. Turning personalization off can change recommendations, but it does not mean every contextual or location-related feature disappears from every Google product.
Why one person sees a story and another does not
Two people can receive different Discover cards because their account activity, feedback, followed topics, hidden sources, device context, language, location and recommendation settings differ. Even people with similar interests may see different cards because Discover is a personalized service rather than a single global queue.

Google’s public pages do not disclose the steps between possible candidates and the final feed. They do not state the relative weight of recency, interest, location, source, clicks or likes; they do not identify a complete candidate pool; and they do not provide a diagnostic explanation for an individual impression. Anyone claiming to know an exact Discover score or a guaranteed traffic trick is going beyond the documented information unless they provide separate, credible evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What publishers must do to be eligible for Discover
Discover eligibility is a policy question, separate from personalization. A story can match a reader’s interests and still be removed or excluded if it violates Google’s rules. Conversely, complying with the rules does not guarantee placement or traffic.
Google’s Discover content policies says eligible content must follow applicable overall Search policies, spam policies and Discover-specific requirements. The documented expectations include:
- Accurate previews: headline and preview text must not mislead readers about what the page contains.
- Clear sponsorship: advertising and paid promotion should not outweigh the editorial content, and sponsorship—including affiliate interest—must be clearly disclosed.
- Transparent authorship and publication: provide clear dates and bylines, information about the author, the publication and publisher, and the company or network behind the site.
- Contact information: make it possible for readers to identify and contact the organization responsible for the content.
Google says content or behaviour that violates these policies may be removed from Discover, and repeated or serious violations may affect eligibility. The policy describes conditions and removal powers, not a promise that a compliant page will receive a card.
Best Value
Personalization versus policy: two different gates
| Question | Personalization answers | Policy answers |
|---|---|---|
| What is being decided? | Whether a subject or story may be relevant to this user | Whether the content meets Discover and applicable Search requirements |
| Typical evidence | Activity, interests, likes, hides, device, location and settings | Accurate previews, disclosure, authorship, dates, publisher details and contact information |
| Who can affect it? | The user can change interests and recommendation settings | The publisher must change the content or site practices |
| Is placement guaranteed? | No; Google does not publish a guaranteed score or impression rule | No; compliance is an eligibility condition, not a placement promise |
This distinction prevents two common mistakes. A user cannot force an ineligible story into Discover by following its topic, and a publisher cannot guarantee a card merely by adding a date or byline. Those actions address different parts of the system.
Troubleshooting an unwanted or missing feed
Discover shows subjects you do not recognize
- Review Manage interests for followed or inferred topics.
- Use the card menu to hide the specific topic or source instead of dismissing unrelated cards.
- Check recent Search activity, clicked results and likes; Google identifies these as possible recommendation inputs.
- Review language, region and location settings if the feed is unexpectedly local or international.
Discover stops showing a subject you want
- Follow the topic again if it was accidentally unfollowed.
- Check whether the source or topic is hidden.
- Review Personalized recommendations and activity controls; turning them off can change the feed.
- Allow time for preferences to affect future cards. Google does not publish a guaranteed update interval.
A publisher sees little or no Discover traffic
- Verify that previews accurately describe the page and do not use sensational claims that the article does not deliver.
- Make dates, bylines, author information, publisher identity and contact details easy to find.
- Disclose sponsorship and affiliate interests clearly, and keep advertising from overwhelming the editorial content.
- Check applicable Search spam and Discover policies; compliance improves eligibility but does not promise distribution.
What Google has not revealed
The official pages identify data categories, examples of settings and activity, user controls and policy requirements. They do not reveal signal weights, a complete ranking formula, the exact freshness window, a minimum engagement rate, a guaranteed click-through threshold or the precise reason a particular card was shown. They also do not publish a named statistic about Discover’s selection mechanism.
That uncertainty is not a gap readers can fill with a single rule such as “likes always win,” “local stories are always prioritized,” or “one search puts a site in the feed.” Such statements are broader than Google’s published evidence. The defensible conclusion is that Discover combines personalization and context under rules Google does not fully disclose, while allowing users to provide ongoing feedback.

Practical privacy choices
If you want a more personalized feed, leaving relevant activity and recommendation settings enabled gives Google more of the account context it says may be used. If you prefer less personalization, review saved activity, location controls and Personalized recommendations, then use hide and unfollow controls to refine what remains. The trade-off is that reducing data or personalization can make recommendations less tailored; the exact effect depends on your account, device, region and the settings available to you.
For the current controls and their regional limitations, consult Google’s Discover help page and the Personalized Recommendations settings guidance. Google may change labels and menu paths as it updates the service.
The reliable answer in one sentence
Google Discover chooses stories by combining possible signals from your account activity, device and Google products, interests and feedback, settings, language and location, then applying content-policy requirements—while keeping the exact ranking formula and the reason for any single impression private.
