To understand a jewellery company’s performance, separate sales value from units and gold weight, then account for product mix, geography, and timing. Market-wide figures show these effects, but they do not by themselves explain any individual company’s results.
Why gold prices can lift sales value but weaken physical demand
Gold is both a material cost and a major component of the price customers see. When its price rises, a fixed household budget buys less gold. A shopper may postpone a purchase, choose a lighter piece, select lower-carat jewellery, or spend on a different product. If customers do buy, however, a higher gold price can make each piece more expensive, lifting the total monetary value of jewellery demand even as the amount of gold bought declines.

This creates an important distinction for company results: revenue measured in currency is not the same as physical volume. Sales value can rise because prices are higher, not because a company sold more pieces, sold more gold by weight, or achieved stronger underlying demand. Nominal growth also does not, on its own, show whether a business improved its margins or made more profit.
What the global figures show
The World Gold Council reported that global gold jewellery demand in 2025 was 1,542.3 tonnes, down from 1,866.9 tonnes in 2024 and the lowest level in five years. At the same time, the value of that demand increased 18% year over year to a record US$172 billion. The Council linked the decline in tonnage to the exceptional rise in gold prices and affordability constraints. The figures describe market demand, not the sales of a particular jewellery company.

The same split appeared in the first quarter of 2026. According to the World Gold Council, global jewellery demand was 299.7 tonnes, down 23% year over year, while its value rose 31% to US$47 billion. The Council’s Q1 2026 jewellery report described consumers as “somewhat at the mercy of the gold price.” That observation refers to the market’s response to price pressure; it is not evidence that every retailer saw the same change in revenue, units, or profit.
In Q2 2026, global jewellery demand was 278.2 tonnes, down 17% year over year, according to the World Gold Council. Looking at the first half of 2026, the Council reported that Indian jewellery demand value rose 26% year over year to US$21 billion. These are different measures and periods: the Q2 figure is global tonnage, while the India figure is the value of demand across H1. They should not be treated as directly comparable company sales metrics.
How a gold-price rise changes what customers buy
A higher gold price does not force all customers to respond in the same way. The effect depends on their budget, the purpose of the purchase, and whether they are willing to change the design, weight, or purity they choose. A customer who is committed to buying jewellery may adjust the purchase rather than abandon it. Another may defer a discretionary purchase or redirect spending.

Common customer responses
- Buy a lighter piece: Reducing the gold weight can keep a design closer to a customer’s budget, even when the gold price has increased.
- Choose lower-carat jewellery: Lower-carat items contain a different proportion of gold, which can affect the amount of gold represented in the purchase and its price.
- Choose studded jewellery: A customer may shift from plain gold jewellery to a studded design, changing the product mix and how much of the purchase value is attributable to gold.
- Exchange old jewellery: Reusing or exchanging existing jewellery can help fund a new purchase, though the effect on a retailer’s reported sales depends on how the transaction is recorded.
- Delay or forgo a purchase: If a shopper is unwilling or unable to adapt the purchase, affordability pressure can reduce demand or move it to a later period.
- Switch some spending to investment products: The World Gold Council identifies this as one possible consumer response, but it does not establish how often this occurs for a particular company or market.
In India during Q1 2026, the World Gold Council observed that mass-market customers shifted toward lighter-weight, lower-carat, and studded jewellery, while higher-income customers continued to favour heavier pieces. That contrast matters to retailers: the same gold-price environment can produce different product mixes across customer segments. It is evidence about India in that quarter, not a universal rule for all countries or income groups.
How wedding demand affects timing and sales mix
Wedding buying can support jewellery demand around relevant wedding seasons because purchases are tied to events and dates. Its influence is therefore partly about when consumers buy, not just how much they spend over an entire year. Wedding-related purchases may strengthen a month or quarter, while demand in another period may be lower. Comparing periods without considering the local wedding calendar can make a seasonal shift look like a lasting change in a company’s performance.
Wedding demand does not necessarily overcome price pressure. In India, wedding-related purchases led jewellery demand in Q1 2026, yet the World Gold Council reported that jewellery demand fell 19% year over year to 66 tonnes. Its value rose 47% to a record INR999 billion. The figures show that a significant wedding-related buying occasion can coexist with lower physical demand and higher monetary value. They do not identify how much of the change came from weddings, prices, or any other factor.

Seasonality can move demand within a quarter
The World Gold Council’s account of India in 2026 describes support from wedding purchases in April, followed by weaker demand later in Q2 amid seasonal and policy factors. It also reported stronger retailer activity in July ahead of the forthcoming wedding season. This pattern illustrates why quarter-to-quarter comparisons need context: buying can be brought forward, delayed, or concentrated around a season rather than distributed evenly.
The same account identifies policy changes and government measures among the factors affecting India’s Q2 demand. That means a company should not attribute every change in sales to gold prices or weddings alone. Other conditions can coincide with the same reporting period, and the market-level report does not quantify their separate contributions.
How to read a jewellery company’s sales report
To assess whether a company sold more jewellery or simply recorded a higher sales value, look for several measures together. A headline revenue increase is incomplete if the company does not also provide information about volume, price, mix, and the markets in which it operates.

Separate value, units, and gold weight
- Sales value or revenue: The currency amount reported for the period. It can reflect the gold price, product mix, selling prices, and the amount sold.
- Units sold: The number of items sold, if the company reports it. A change in units can differ from a change in gold weight if customers buy heavier or lighter pieces.
- Gold weight sold: A physical-volume measure that helps show whether the business sold more or less gold, independent of the higher or lower monetary value attached to it.
These measures answer different questions. Revenue is useful for understanding the scale of reported sales, while unit and weight data help test whether sales growth reflects more physical product. If a company reports revenue growth but not units or weight, do not assume that customer demand grew by the same percentage.
Check price and product mix
Where available, compare the average gold price during the reporting period with the company’s average selling price or ticket size. Then look for details on weight per item, purity or carat, and the share of studded versus plain jewellery. A shift toward lighter or lower-carat items can affect physical gold volume and average ticket size differently. A change in studded product share can also alter the relationship between gold weight and total selling value.

These details help distinguish a price effect from a mix effect, but they are not interchangeable. A reported rise in average selling price might reflect higher gold prices, a move toward more expensive designs, or both. Without a company’s own breakdown, a market-level trend cannot establish which explanation applies.

Match the comparison period to the local calendar
Compare like with like: the same quarter year over year is generally more informative about seasonal businesses than two adjacent quarters with different wedding or festival timing. Also check whether the company’s main markets share the same wedding calendar. A retailer concentrated in India should not automatically be assessed using the timing of wedding demand in another country, and a company operating across multiple markets may combine different seasonal patterns in one reported result.
Quarter-to-quarter movements can still be useful, especially when considering demand shifts within a season, but they need to be read alongside the calendar and any changes in company reporting. A stronger month or quarter ahead of a wedding season does not by itself prove that annual demand has increased; it may reflect when customers chose to make purchases.
Look for company-specific evidence
Market demand statistics provide context, not a company-level explanation. For a named retailer or manufacturer, examine the relevant filings or results for the same geography and period. Same-store sales, store additions, inventory, channel mix, and management commentary can help explain performance, provided the company reports them. Online versus store sales, organised versus independent retail, and premium versus mass-market exposure may also matter where data are available.

- Fix the scope. Identify the company, geography, reporting period, currency, and whether the comparison is year over year or quarter over quarter. Confirm whether the measure is company revenue or market jewellery demand.
- Read the physical measures first. Note reported units and gold weight, if available. A decline in tonnage alongside rising sales value is consistent with price and affordability pressure, but does not prove the same pattern at an individual company.
- Check the price environment. Compare the relevant period’s gold-price context with the company’s reported selling prices or average ticket size, if disclosed. Keep currency and timing aligned.
- Examine the product mix. Look for changes in weight, carat, studded versus plain jewellery, and customer segment. These can change both the average value and the amount of gold represented in sales.
- Map the seasonal calendar. Identify relevant wedding and festival periods for the company’s principal markets. Consider whether demand may have shifted into or out of the period being compared.
- Test other explanations. Review company commentary and disclosed changes in stores, channels, inventory, policy conditions, or government measures. Do not assign a movement to weddings or gold prices if other factors are also in play.
- State the limit of the conclusion. If physical volume or a relevant company breakdown is missing, describe the reported value movement and the market context without claiming to know its cause.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
World Gold Council data through Q2 2026 show that global jewellery demand can fall in tonnes while rising in value, and that India’s wedding-related demand can support buying while coexisting with lower quarterly tonnage. They also show that seasonal timing, customer segment, product choices, and policy conditions can shape observed demand. These patterns are useful for interpreting the environment in which jewellery businesses operate.
They are not audited results for any named company. The market figures do not isolate gold-price and wedding effects on a retailer’s revenue, profit, units sold, or same-store sales. Nor do global and India-wide outcomes establish that every company, country, channel, or customer segment responded in the same way. The latest quarterly evidence reflected here is the World Gold Council’s reporting through 30 July 2026, including Q2 2026 data; it should be read as a dated snapshot rather than a guarantee of conditions in later periods.
