A gold ETF gives you exchange-traded exposure to gold without arranging storage or insurance for bars yourself. In a physically backed trust such as SPDR Gold Shares (ticker GLD), the fund holds gold bars, issues shares representing fractional beneficial interests in that pool, and aims to track gold bullion’s price less expenses. Your result can still differ from the quoted gold price because of fund costs, trading spreads, and premiums or discounts between the share price and the trust’s net asset value (NAV).
“Gold ETF” is not one uniform product label. Some funds hold bullion, others use futures contracts, and still others own mining companies. Identify the strategy before assessing performance, risk, or diversification.

What a gold ETF is
An exchange-traded fund is a pooled investment whose shares trade throughout the day on a stock exchange. A gold ETF packages a particular type of gold exposure into those shares. The legal structure, holdings, and return pattern depend on the product.

A physically backed trust holds allocated gold bars with a custodian and issues shares against the trust’s assets. GLD, a U.S.-listed example, trades on NYSE Arca. Its stated objective is to reflect the performance of gold bullion less the trust’s expenses. A GLD share is a fractional beneficial interest in the trust; it is not a retail claim on one identifiable bar that you can normally take home.

Futures-based funds
A futures fund seeks gold exposure through exchange-traded futures rather than owning a matching pile of bars. Its return depends on changes in futures prices, the process of replacing expiring contracts, collateral income or losses, and the fund’s expenses. Futures prices can move differently from the spot price of physical gold, especially when the futures curve is in contango or backwardation.
Gold-mining equity funds
A mining-stock fund owns shares of companies that explore for, develop, or produce gold. Its performance reflects gold prices alongside operating costs, energy prices, labor, permitting, debt, management decisions, political conditions in mining jurisdictions, and the broader stock market. It is equity exposure, not a direct claim on bullion.
| Product strategy | What it holds | Main return influences | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physically backed trust | Gold bars, with cash used for trust operations | Spot bullion price, expenses, trading spread, premium or discount to NAV | Share represents fractional beneficial interest; no ordinary retail bar redemption |
| Futures-based ETF | Gold futures and related collateral | Futures price, roll results, collateral return, expenses | Can diverge from spot gold |
| Mining-equity ETF | Shares of gold-mining companies | Gold price plus company, industry, equity-market, and geopolitical factors | Business and stock risk can dominate bullion movements |
How a physically backed gold ETF creates and trades shares
Two separate markets operate at once: ordinary investors trade existing shares on an exchange, while large institutional firms called authorized participants (APs) create or redeem shares directly with the trust in large baskets.
- Investors place exchange orders. You buy or sell shares through a brokerage account at the current market price. The order may execute above, below, or very close to the trust’s NAV per share.
- An AP assembles a creation basket. When demand for shares is strong, an AP delivers the required quantity of gold, plus any specified cash component, to the trust.
- The trust issues shares. In return for that basket, the trust delivers a large block of newly created shares to the AP. The AP can sell those shares in the market.
- Redemption works in reverse. When shares are plentiful or trading below NAV, an AP can return a creation-sized block to the trust and receive gold and cash, subject to the trust’s procedures.
- Arbitrage links prices. The ability to exchange baskets for underlying assets gives professional firms an incentive to trade when the share price departs materially from NAV. This mechanism can narrow, but cannot guarantee elimination of, a premium or discount.
The large-basket process is why a retail holder generally cannot exchange a few shares for a specific bar. Your practical exit is selling shares on the exchange, where the realized price depends on liquidity and the bid-ask spread.
How the trust calculates NAV and why your price can differ
NAV is the value of the trust’s assets minus its liabilities, divided by the number of shares outstanding. The cited GLD filing says the trustee uses the LBMA Gold Price PM to value gold when determining NAV. That valuation is a reference point, not a promise that every exchange trade will occur at that exact figure.

Premiums and discounts
A share trades at a premium when its market price is above NAV and at a discount when it is below NAV. Supply and demand for the shares, market-making capacity, trading hours, and the ease of creating or redeeming baskets all affect the gap. During severe market stress, liquidity can deteriorate and the gap can widen.
Intraday timing differences
Exchange prices change continuously, while the trust’s official NAV uses a specified valuation time and methodology. If gold moves sharply after the NAV reference is set, the share price may incorporate that information before the next official NAV is published. Comparing an intraday ETF quote with a stale or differently timed bullion price can therefore make tracking look worse than it is.
What determines a physically backed ETF’s return
For a bullion trust, the starting point is the change in the market value of the gold held. The investor’s actual result then reflects several additional components.
| Return component | How it affects an investor |
|---|---|
| Gold price movement | The largest exposure: a rise or fall in bullion value generally raises or lowers the trust’s NAV. |
| Operating expenses | Costs are paid from the trust’s assets. In GLD’s structure, gold is sold to pay expenses, so the quantity of gold represented by each share declines gradually over time. |
| Bid-ask spread | The difference between the best available buy and sell prices is an immediate trading cost, especially relevant for frequent or large orders. |
| Premium or discount to NAV | Buying above NAV or selling below NAV can reduce the investor’s realized result; the reverse can help. |
| Taxes and brokerage charges | Your account’s tax treatment and any broker commissions or regulatory charges affect after-tax, after-cost performance, but are separate from the trust’s bullion return. |
A physically backed trust does not produce interest, dividends, or rent from its gold. Its economic outcome is primarily price appreciation or depreciation, less these costs. A flat gold price can still produce a small decline over time if expenses and trading friction exceed any favorable price discrepancy.
Why gold prices rise or fall
Gold prices respond to interacting macroeconomic, financial, supply, and demand forces. None is a reliable short-term forecasting formula by itself.

Interest rates and inflation expectations
Gold does not pay a coupon. When inflation-adjusted yields on cash or bonds rise, the opportunity cost of holding non-income-producing gold can increase. Conversely, falling real yields or rising expectations that inflation will erode currency purchasing power can make gold more attractive. The relationship is not mechanical: investors may buy gold for protection even while rates are high.
The U.S. dollar
Gold is commonly quoted in U.S. dollars. A stronger dollar can make gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies and may weigh on dollar-denominated demand; a weaker dollar can have the opposite effect. Currency moves interact with local inflation, interest rates, and investor hedging needs.
Political and geopolitical events
Wars, sanctions, financial-system stress, elections, and fears about sovereign credit can increase demand for assets perceived as stores of value. The initial reaction can be volatile, and safe-haven demand may reverse as conditions change.
Central-bank activity
Central banks’ purchases and sales alter official-sector demand. The World Gold Council reported 1,045 tonnes of net central-bank purchases in 2024. That figure describes aggregate activity; it does not prove that central-bank buying caused any particular daily or annual price move.
Jewelry and industrial demand
Consumers use gold in jewelry, while manufacturers use it in selected industrial and technology applications. Income levels, local prices, cultural calendars, and manufacturing cycles affect these flows.

Mine production, costs, and above-ground stocks
New supply depends on mine output, project development, ore grades, energy and labor costs, and permitting. The World Gold Council estimated global mine production at approximately 3,661 tonnes in 2024. Existing above-ground gold is also large relative to annual mine output, so recycling, investor selling, and changes in willingness to hold metal can matter as much as newly mined supply.
Investment flows and market positioning
Bar and coin buyers, institutional investors, futures traders, and ETF shareholders can move prices as they change positions. Global physically backed gold ETF holdings had essentially flat net flows in 2024 after three consecutive years of net outflows; World Gold Council data reported in a 2026 Securities and Exchange Commission filing showed net inflows in 2025. Those flow statistics provide context, not a single-cause explanation for returns.

The World Gold Council estimated that 48,634 tonnes—about 22% of above-ground gold stock—were held as bars, coins, and gold-backed ETFs at year-end 2024. The estimate, cited in a 2026 SEC filing, combines several forms of investment-held metal and should not be read as the holdings of ETFs alone.

- Confirm the strategy and holdings. Determine whether the fund owns bullion, futures, mining shares, or a blend. Read how derivatives, collateral, and securities lending are handled.
- Check the benchmark and valuation method. Note which gold price reference is used, at what time, and how NAV is calculated. A futures fund’s benchmark will not be the same as a physical-bullion benchmark.
- Read the expense ratio and other costs. Include management fees, custody, administration, futures rolls, brokerage costs inside the fund, and any one-time charges. Fees and terms can change, so use the current documents.
- Understand custody and legal structure. Review the trustee, custodian, sub-custodians, audit arrangements, insurance language, and what rights shareholders actually have if access to stored bullion is disrupted.
- Assess trading liquidity. Look at typical trading volume and the average bid-ask spread, not just the fund’s assets. A liquid market usually makes entry and exit less costly.
- Measure tracking quality over matching periods. Compare the fund’s total return with its stated benchmark after adjusting for the same dates, valuation times, and currency. A short interval can be distorted by timing; several market conditions are more informative.
- Check creation and redemption terms. Basket size, eligible bullion, cash components, and the list of authorized participants affect how efficiently the fund can keep market price near NAV.
- Consider your objective. A bullion trust may suit someone seeking direct gold-price exposure; a mining fund adds company risk; a futures fund adds contract-roll and collateral behavior. None is automatically a substitute for the others.
Risks and common surprises
Gold-price volatility
Gold can fall quickly when real yields rise, the dollar strengthens, investors reduce defensive positions, or liquidity needs force selling. A “safe-haven” reputation does not remove drawdown risk.
Best Value
Tracking shortfalls
Expenses, spreads, NAV timing, and premiums or discounts can make a shareholder’s return differ from a headline spot-gold change. For futures products, roll performance can add another source of divergence.
Liquidity and operational disruption
In stressed markets, exchange liquidity, authorized-participant activity, or access to stored bullion can be restricted. The filing for GLD discusses possible disruption to creation and redemption, premiums or discounts, ongoing expense-related gold sales, and risks of loss or restricted access to bullion.
No regular income
A bullion trust does not generate an interest or dividend stream. Anyone needing cash distributions must sell shares or use a different asset alongside the ETF.

GLD’s mechanics are specific to its U.S. structure. Funds listed in other countries may use different trustees, tax rules, custody arrangements, redemption rights, currencies, and investor protections. Read the local prospectus rather than assuming that every product labeled “gold ETF” works the same way.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down whether you want bullion, futures, or mining-company exposure.
- Read the latest prospectus for fees, benchmark, custody, and redemption provisions.
- Check the fund’s typical spread and trading volume during the hours you expect to trade.
- Decide how much tracking difference and price volatility you can tolerate.
- Compare performance with the correct benchmark and account for currency and taxes.
- Use a limit order when the spread or premium/discount is unusually wide, and avoid assuming that a market order will fill near the last quoted price.
The central question is not simply whether an ETF “holds gold.” It is which exposure you are buying, how that exposure is maintained, and which costs and market mechanisms stand between the underlying asset and your account’s realized return.
