Nicolas Cage says Spider-Noir nearly stalled because decision-makers worried about releasing a black-and-white series. His proposed fix: offer a color version as well, inspired by seeing Godzilla Minus One in color and in a black-and-white reissue. That account explains why Spider-Noir has two presentations—but the available reporting does not independently confirm that his suggestion determined the studio’s decision to make it.
Why was Spider-Noir almost not made?
At Dallas Fan Expo, Cage described resistance to the series’ monochrome look. As reported by ComicBook.com, he recalled: “They weren’t going to make the show,” followed by, “They were terrified of the black and white. they were so nervous about it.” Cage said he contacted producer Jen Salke and looked for a way to get the project made.

Those remarks are Cage’s account of the obstacle and what changed the conversation. The reporting does not include independent confirmation of the studio’s internal deliberations, so it is more accurate to say the series nearly stalled over concerns he described than to treat a cancellation decision as established fact.

How did Godzilla Minus One figure into Cage’s proposal?
Cage said he had watched Godzilla Minus One in its color release and its black-and-white reissue. He recalled that the monochrome presentation made it feel like “an old Godzilla movie.” The experience gave him a model for offering audiences a choice rather than making black and white the only way to watch Spider-Noir.

As Cage put it in a February 2026 interview with Esquire: “You don’t have to only do it in black and white. You could do it in color as well because this is for all ages.” ComicBook.com reports Cage said the proposal helped save the series. Esquire also records his reasoning for two versions, but does not independently establish that the idea secured the studio’s greenlight.
Why are there color and black-and-white versions?
The two presentations address different sides of the concept. Cage said he was drawn personally to the black-and-white version, which supports the series’ film-noir style. He also argued that color could be more accessible to viewers less accustomed to monochrome films. In Esquire, he said both versions worked for different reasons.

| Presentation | What it emphasizes, according to Cage |

| Black and white | The film-noir atmosphere Cage said he preferred. |
| Color | An alternative for viewers less familiar with black-and-white films. |
What is the series’ noir concept?
Spider-Noir combines a 1930s film-noir sensibility—including its style and speech—with a Spider character. Esquire identifies Cage’s live-action character as Ben Reilly, a private investigator. The dual presentation lets the noir look remain central without making it the only visual option.
