Geomagnetic storms disturb Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere. The same storm can bend and delay satellite-navigation signals, disrupt some long-range radio paths, and induce unwanted currents in grounded transmission networks. The result is usually degraded accuracy or service rather than an automatic, worldwide failure.

GPS/GNSS errors arise mainly from changing ionospheric density; radio effects depend on the band and propagation mode; grid hazards arise when rapidly changing magnetic fields create geoelectric fields and quasi-direct currents in long lines. Storm intensity, duration, latitude, local geology, network design and current operating conditions determine how severe the consequences become.

One storm, three different physical pathways

A geomagnetic storm begins when disturbed solar-wind conditions drive currents and energetic-particle precipitation in the magnetosphere. NOAA explains that this energy heats the upper atmosphere, changes its density distribution and creates horizontal variations in the ionosphere. Those changes matter to radio signals, while the storm’s rapidly changing magnetic field matters to long, grounded electrical systems. See NOAA’s explanation of geomagnetic storms.

System Main pathway Typical consequence
GPS and other GNSS Changing ionospheric density alters the signal’s path and timing Position errors, unstable fixes or disrupted navigation
Long-range radio Ionospheric propagation and reflection become disturbed Fading, unexpected range changes or loss of service on affected paths
High-voltage grids Time-varying magnetic fields induce geoelectric fields and geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) Transformer stress, abnormal currents and voltages, protective trips or outages

These pathways share a space-weather cause but should not be treated as one failure mode. A storm can produce noticeable GNSS errors without a blackout, or disturb a particular radio path while the local grid continues operating normally.

How geomagnetic storms reduce GPS and GNSS accuracy

The ionosphere changes the signal path

Satellite-navigation receivers calculate position from the travel time of signals transmitted by satellites. The ionosphere contains charged particles that delay and refract those signals. During a storm, heating and storm-time currents redistribute ionospheric plasma. The resulting density gradients make the delay less predictable and can vary across short distances and times.

NOAA’s supported summary is precise: “Geomagnetic storms can also modify the signal from radio navigation systems (GPS and GNSS) causing degraded accuracy.” The agency does not describe every receiver as failing. Instead, the signal modification can increase positioning error, make a solution fluctuate, or interrupt a reliable fix in particularly disturbed conditions. Details are outlined on the NOAA Space Weather Impacts page.

What a user may notice

  • A displayed position that wanders or differs from a surveyed reference.
  • Longer time to obtain a fix, intermittent loss of lock or reduced confidence in the reported coordinates.
  • Different performance between receivers because antenna view, correction services, frequency, firmware and local interference are not identical.
  • Errors that vary by location and time as ionospheric structure moves overhead.

A degraded satellite-navigation signal does not automatically mean that every map, aircraft system or phone will stop working. The practical issue is that the receiver’s calculated position can be less accurate or less available than its normal specification during the disturbance. Safety-critical operations therefore treat space-weather alerts as one input to navigation integrity and use independent checks when required.

Why the effect is uneven

Storm intensity is only one variable. The local state of the ionosphere, satellite geometry, receiver design and the quality of any augmentation or correction service all influence the result. A receiver in one region may show a modest error while another, under a stronger ionospheric gradient, experiences a larger deviation. The sources establish the mechanism and degraded-accuracy risk, not a universal error value that applies to every device.

How radio communications are disrupted

Geomagnetic storms and ionospheric propagation

Many long-range radio services depend on the ionosphere to refract or reflect signals back toward Earth. Storm-driven changes in electron density can alter the height, strength and continuity of those layers. A path that normally supports communication may fade, shift in usable frequency or become difficult to establish. The U.S. Geological Survey’s magnetic-storm FAQ notes that long-range radio relying on ionospheric propagation can become difficult or impossible during magnetic storms.

That statement applies to services using the ionosphere, not to every radio band or every local link. Short-range systems whose path is entirely below the disturbed ionosphere may be unaffected, while a high-frequency (HF) circuit spanning a large distance can experience severe fading. Terrain, frequency choice, antenna pattern and the route’s latitude also matter.

Do not confuse three kinds of radio disruption

NOAA separates geomagnetic-storm effects from two other space-weather mechanisms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Geomagnetic-storm disturbance: changing ionospheric conditions disrupt propagation and can impair long-range radio paths.
  • Solar-flare radio blackout: X-rays from a flare ionize the lower ionosphere and can degrade or block HF communications, especially on the sunlit side of Earth.
  • Solar-radiation-storm effects: energetic particles can interfere with radio communications at high latitudes.

All three can occur during a broader solar event, but they are not interchangeable explanations. Calling every HF outage a geomagnetic-storm effect overstates what the evidence supports. NOAA’s service-specific distinctions appear in Space Weather Impacts.

What radio operators should expect

Operators should interpret a storm alert alongside the service they run. An ionospheric-path problem may appear as rapid fading, changed optimum frequency or an inability to complete a long-haul contact, while a local VHF or line-of-sight link may continue normally. Keep alternate frequencies, routes or communication methods available for critical operations, and check official space-weather advisories rather than assuming that one band’s behavior predicts another’s.

How geomagnetic storms stress power grids

From magnetic variation to induced current

When the storm’s magnetic field changes rapidly, Faraday’s law produces an electric field in the ground. Long conductors, especially transmission lines connected to grounded transformer neutrals, provide a path for quasi-direct currents known as geomagnetically induced currents. NOAA describes this process in Electric Power Transmission.

The current is not ordinary alternating-current load. It enters equipment as a slowly varying component superimposed on the grid waveform. The amount depends on the storm-time electric field, the line’s length and orientation, grounding arrangements, transformer configuration and the electrical conductivity of the underlying geology.

Why transformers are vulnerable

GICs can drive a transformer core toward saturation during part of each AC cycle. Saturation changes the exciting current and produces abnormal current and voltage waveforms. The consequences can include excess heating, reactive-power consumption, harmonic distortion, protective-relay operation and equipment trips. Under unfavorable conditions, several local problems can combine into a wider service interruption.

USGS emphasizes that estimating actual currents requires both geophysical conductivity information and transmission-line data. A large storm therefore does not impose one fixed risk on every utility. Grid loading also matters: NOAA notes that operating conditions such as high demand can affect how a disturbance propagates through the system.

What a blackout example proves—and what it does not

The March 1989 geomagnetic disturbance caused the Hydro-Québec blackout, affecting more than 6 million people, according to the USGS overview published July 18, 2018. The event demonstrates that space weather can produce a major grid outage. It does not mean that every storm, or even every storm of a similar headline classification, will create the same result. Protection settings, network topology, transformer design, real-time loading and regional geology all change the outcome.

Where the electrical risk is highest

Risk is geographic because the ground is not electrically uniform. USGS’s October 2024 fact sheet identifies the Upper Midwest and East as higher geoelectric-hazard regions in the contiguous United States, associated in part with electrically resistive geological structures. Historically, those areas have experienced more interference to electric-power systems.

Local surface impedance—the relationship between the ground’s electric and magnetic response—controls how much geoelectric field develops for a given magnetic variation. Two utilities facing the same storm can therefore see different induced voltages. Long lines that cross regions with strong conductivity contrasts can be especially important in engineering assessments.

Risk factor Why it changes the outcome
Storm intensity and rate of magnetic change Faster or larger variations can create stronger induced electric fields.
Local geology Resistive structures and conductivity contrasts can increase geoelectric fields.
Line length and orientation Long conductors intercept more of the regional electric field.
Transformer and grounding design Equipment determines how GIC enters and how much stress it produces.
System loading and topology Demand, available capacity and switching configuration influence whether a local problem remains contained.

These variables are why a global storm map is not a direct outage forecast for a particular substation or household.

Historical scale and frequency

Documented disruptions

NOAA lists the Canadian blackout in 1989 and a Swedish blackout in October 2003 among grid impacts associated with geomagnetic activity. They are historical precedents, not promises that present-day systems will respond identically. Utilities have changed equipment, monitoring and operating procedures, while each network’s exposure remains site-specific.

Economic estimates need their qualifications

The 2018 USGS overview cites earlier studies estimating that a similar storm-induced blackout in the northeastern United States could have exceeded $10 billion in economic impact. That is a conditional scenario estimate, not a measured loss and not a current forecast. USGS also notes that the estimate excludes additional effects on emergency services and public safety.

How often do 1989-scale storms occur?

A USGS publication record for the February 24, 2026 review Magnetic storms and geoelectric hazards summarizes storms comparable to March 1989 as occurring roughly once every four solar cycles. “Roughly” is essential: solar cycles vary, and the statistic is not a timetable predicting the next event or its exact consequences. Read the review at USGS: Magnetic storms and geoelectric hazards.

What people and operators should do with the information

For anyone relying on GPS

  1. Assume that a storm alert can reduce accuracy or availability, rather than assuming total failure.
  2. For navigation or surveying where an error matters, verify position with an independent reference or sensor.
  3. Expect conditions to vary by place and time; a receiver that works normally in one location is not proof that another location is unaffected.

For radio users

  1. Identify whether the service depends on ionospheric propagation. A local line-of-sight link and a long-distance HF path do not share the same exposure.
  2. Monitor official advisories and be prepared to change frequency, route or communications method.
  3. Do not infer a geomagnetic cause from every radio outage; check for solar-flare X-ray and high-latitude particle effects as separate possibilities.

For grid planners and utilities

  1. Combine space-weather measurements with local conductivity models and transmission-line data to estimate geoelectric fields and GICs.
  2. Evaluate transformer, grounding and protection behavior under the system’s actual loading and topology.
  3. Use regional risk information, especially in areas identified by USGS as having higher geoelectric hazards, while still assessing each network individually.

Consumer surge protectors and household backup batteries do not prevent GICs in high-voltage transmission infrastructure. The mechanisms occur across regional networks and transformers, so mitigation is primarily an engineering and operating responsibility rather than a home-device fix.

The practical bottom line

Geomagnetic storms can make satellite navigation less accurate, disrupt ionosphere-dependent long-range radio and drive damaging currents in some power systems. The effects are conditional, regional and service-specific: degraded GPS is not the same as a radio blackout, and a strong storm is not an automatic grid collapse. Understanding the pathway, local exposure and operating context is the key to interpreting both warnings and real-world symptoms.
