There is no single industry-wide Game of the Year cutoff. Eligibility depends on the award’s cycle, release territory, definition of a qualifying game, submission rules and voting process. A title can qualify for one award and miss another, so check the rulebook for the specific award and year—not just the game’s launch date.
How does a game qualify for Game of the Year?
Each award defines its own eligibility. The key question is usually whether the game was publicly available in a specified market during a stated period, but rules can also cover submissions, content type and category exceptions. The ceremony date is not the eligibility cutoff: a game released after one award’s window may still qualify for a later cycle.

What is the cutoff date for Game of the Year awards?
There is no shared cutoff. The BAFTA 2027 window crosses calendar years and is tied to UK release; the D.I.C.E. 30th annual rules use calendar-year 2026 availability in North America; the cited Japan Game Awards window runs from June 2025 to May 2026 and is tied to Japanese release. The GDCA’s 2026 rules concern games released during 2025.

Keep four dates separate when reading an award announcement:
- Release window: the period a game must be available to qualify.
- Submission deadline: the last date an entrant can submit a game. For the 2027 GDCA, the official site lists 1 November 2026.
- Nomination period: when voters or juries select nominees.
- Ceremony date: when winners are announced. The GDCA lists 2 March 2027 for its 2027 ceremony; this does not define which releases qualify.
BAFTA says its criteria are reviewed annually, so a previous cycle’s window should not be assumed to carry forward. Check BAFTA’s current rules for the cycle in question.

Why can a game be eligible for one GOTY award but not another?
The market of release can differ
Eligibility may depend on when a game launched in the award’s specified territory, not simply its original global release date. BAFTA’s 2027 rules refer to UK releases, Japan Game Awards uses Japan releases, and D.I.C.E.’s 30th annual rules specify North America. A game that launched elsewhere earlier may still need to meet the relevant market’s window.

The award cycles do not line up
A December release may fit a calendar-year award but fall outside another award’s rolling or cross-calendar window. The Japan Game Awards period, for example, begins in June and ends the following May; BAFTA’s 2027 period begins in November 2025 and ends in November 2026. Always compare the actual start and end dates for the named cycle.
Rules treat updates and re-releases differently
“Game” does not mean the same thing in every category or rulebook. BAFTA generally excludes early-access games, does not treat DLC as a new standalone game, and restricts remakes and remasters. D.I.C.E. may accept remakes with demonstrable changes to technical, gameplay or art assets, but excludes remasters or ports without significant changes to the core experience. The 2026 GDCA rules exclude upgrades, expansions and mission packs.
These distinctions matter even when the underlying title was released during the right period: a new edition, expansion or port may not count as a new eligible game. Category-specific exceptions can also apply. BAFTA allows some DLC in specified craft or performance categories when it meets its originality requirements, while its general rule is that DLC is not a standalone game.

Who submits, nominates and votes?
BAFTA Games Awards
BAFTA describes a process with member voting and industry juries. For the 2027 awards, members vote in the first round; members determine nominees and winners in Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game. Juries of nine to twelve industry experts consider longlists in other categories and decide their nominees and winners. Evolving Game remains open to member voting across all rounds. The Game Awards
The surfaced official FAQ information describes more than 100 media and influencer outlets on the jury for most categories and a 90% jury/10% public-vote split for the 2025 cycle. Those figures are specific to the 2025-cycle information, not a guaranteed formula for future ceremonies. Specialist peer panels narrow submissions to no more than five finalists per category. For Game of the Year, panel leaders and panelists make the preliminary selection of five finalists, then eligible Academy members vote. Members can rank up to three nominees, and the rules describe an instant-runoff tally until a title reaches a majority. Game Developers Choice Awards
The 2026 rules describe ICAN, an invitation-only network of game creators, as responsible for nominations and winner selection, with a separate public Audience Award. The 2027 site says it is moving to a submission-based process, with submissions open to all games and no submission fee. Japan Game Awards
General voting helps inform the selection committee, which decides winners after evaluating design, programming, graphics, sound, scenario and user evaluation. Vote totals and sales volumes may be considered in deliberations; the public vote is not described as directly determining the winner. Can a game win GOTY if it came out late in the year?
Yes, if it was available by that award’s cutoff and meets the other requirements. A late-year release is not automatically disqualified, but a game launching after the stated end date normally belongs to a later cycle. For example, a game released after the 2025 Game Awards cutoff of 21 November 2025 at 9 p.m. Pacific Time was described in the FAQ as eligible for the 2026 ceremony instead. Do not infer the 2026 cutoff from the 2025 date; the cited FAQ result does not establish it.
For a game released close to a cutoff, verify the relevant market’s availability date and the award’s definition of “publicly available.” A title’s announcement date, early access date, regional launch and full release may not be treated identically by every award.

How to check a specific game’s eligibility
- Name the award and cycle. “GOTY eligible” is incomplete without specifying, for example, BAFTA 2027 or D.I.C.E. 30th annual.
- Read the release window and territory. Check the stated start and end dates, the country or market, and whether the game must be publicly available.
- Check the game’s format and category. Look for rules on early access, DLC, expansions, ports, remakes, remasters and ongoing games; confirm any category-specific exception.
- Separate eligibility from entry. Find out whether a publisher or entrant must submit the game, meet membership requirements, or meet a submission deadline. A submission deadline is not the release cutoff.
- Use the current rulebook. Awards can revise criteria each year. Treat an older cycle’s rules as historical unless the current award page confirms they still apply.
