Galaxy clusters bend light because their enormous mass curves spacetime. Light from a more distant galaxy then follows a curved route around the cluster, so observers may see that background galaxy stretched into an arc, magnified, split into multiple images or, with near-perfect alignment, formed into a ring. Astronomers use those distortions as both a natural telescope and a map of the cluster’s total mass, including dark matter.
What gravitational lensing is
Gravitational lensing is the visible bending of light by gravity. In general relativity, mass does not merely exert a force on passing light; it changes the geometry of spacetime around it. A light ray follows the straightest possible path through that curved geometry, and the path appears bent to a distant observer.

A galaxy cluster is an especially effective lens because it contains the combined mass of hundreds or thousands of galaxies, hot gas and a much larger amount of dark matter. The cluster lies in the foreground, between Earth and a more distant galaxy or other luminous object. That distant object is the background source. The light we see from the source has travelled through the cluster’s warped spacetime before reaching a telescope.

Its gravitational field changes the route the light takes through space and time.

How a cluster changes a background galaxy’s image
1. The light leaves the background source
Light begins at a galaxy far behind the cluster. Without the cluster, the light would travel along a path that points directly toward the observer, and the galaxy would appear in its ordinary position and shape.
2. The light passes through curved spacetime
As the light approaches the cluster, the cluster’s total mass curves spacetime. Different rays from the same background galaxy pass through regions with slightly different gravitational curvature. Their paths are deflected by different amounts.
3. The observer receives altered paths
The telescope collects the rays that arrive at Earth. Because those rays no longer follow the undeflected paths, the source can appear shifted, stretched, magnified or duplicated. The apparent image is still one distant object viewed through several gravitationally altered routes.

4. Alignment determines the pattern
The exact appearance depends on the positions of the observer, the cluster and the source, as well as the detailed distribution of mass inside the cluster. A source passing near a dense region can produce a long arc. Several viable light paths can create multiple images. If the alignment is close to symmetric, the source can form an Einstein ring or a partial ring.

Arcs, rings and multiple images
| Observed appearance | What the geometry means | What astronomers can use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Long, thin arc | Light from a background galaxy is strongly stretched by the cluster’s gravitational field. | Tracing the mass distribution and studying a source that might otherwise be too faint or distant to resolve. |
| Multiple images | Several light paths from one background source reach the observer. | Checking lens models and measuring how mass is arranged along the different paths. |
| Einstein ring or partial ring | Near alignment between observer, lens and source produces an almost circular set of images. | Constraining the projected mass near the ring and testing the lens geometry. |
These forms are not separate objects physically wrapped around the cluster. The blue arcs in images of Abell 370, for example, are distorted views of more distant galaxies. NASA describes the cluster’s gravity stretching and magnifying remote background galaxies into arcs, with many background sources appearing more than once.
Why lensing can magnify distant galaxies
A cluster can redirect light from a background source into lines of sight that would otherwise miss a telescope. In that sense, the cluster acts as a natural magnifier. A distant galaxy that is too faint or too small for an undistorted observation can become detectable or structurally clearer when its light is lensed.
Magnification does not mean that every lensed source is automatically brighter in every practical observation. The measured signal depends on the source, the amount and type of distortion, the telescope and detector, exposure time, wavelength and background conditions. Lensing can also stretch a source over a larger apparent area, changing how its surface brightness and details are recorded. Astronomers therefore model the lens before interpreting the source’s intrinsic size, brightness or shape.

They measure the visible distortions
Researchers identify background galaxies behind the cluster and measure their apparent positions, shapes and, when available, multiple-image relationships. A coherent pattern of stretching across many background galaxies indicates that the cluster’s gravity is altering the paths in a systematic way.

They infer the gravitational field
The observed distortions are compared with mathematical lens models. The model asks what distribution of mass could bend light by the measured amounts. Mass in the cluster’s galaxies and hot gas contributes to the gravity, as does dark matter. The result is an inferred map of projected mass, not a direct photograph of dark matter.
They compare the map with ordinary matter
Astronomers can compare the lensing-derived mass map with the locations of starlight from galaxies and X-ray-emitting hot gas. Differences reveal where most of the mass is concentrated and whether the mass follows the visible material. NASA’s Hubble Dark Matter material describes a dark-matter map derived from Hubble observations of distortions in light from distant objects, while distinguishing that mapped mass from starlight and hot gas.
This distinction matters: lensing responds to gravity, not to whether matter emits light. It can reveal the gravitational influence of dark matter, but it does not display dark-matter particles directly or, by itself, identify what those particles are.
Strong and weak lensing in cluster studies
Strong lensing
Strong lensing creates conspicuous effects such as arcs, rings and multiple images. It is most obvious in dense central regions or where the alignment between the cluster and a background source is favorable. Because the geometry is visually dramatic, strong-lensing features are often the first signs that a cluster is acting as a lens.

Weak lensing
Weak lensing produces subtler, statistical changes in the shapes of many background galaxies. Individual galaxies may not show an obvious arc, but a population can share a small, coherent alignment. NASA describes weak lensing as a way to study smaller dark-matter clumps. For cluster work, combining strong and weak signals can extend the mass estimate from the crowded core into the wider surroundings.
Abell 370: reading a cluster image
Abell 370 provides a clear cluster-scale example. The foreground cluster galaxies occupy the image’s nearer distance, while blue, elongated arcs belong to galaxies much farther away. The arcs appear stretched and magnified because their light has passed through Abell 370’s gravitational field. Several background sources are multiply imaged, so what looks like a collection of separate blue features can include repeated views of the same distant galaxy.
When astronomers model Abell 370, they use the positions and shapes of these arcs to estimate how mass is distributed across the cluster. The visible galaxies are only part of that mass. The lensing signal also includes the gravitational contribution of dark matter and ordinary matter that is too faint or not concentrated in stars.

Gravitational lensing can change not only where an object appears, but also when its light arrives. Different routes through a cluster have different lengths and pass through different gravitational potentials. Light following one route can therefore reach Earth later than light from the same event following another route.
Best Value
Supernova Refsdal illustrates this effect. Behind the cluster MACS J1149.6+2223, Hubble observed four lensed images of the supernova in 2014. A later image appeared at a position predicted by lens models. The separate paths through the cluster delayed the light differently, so the later appearance was another arrival of the same supernova’s light rather than a second explosion.
Such events provide a demanding test of mass models: a model must reproduce both the positions of the images and the relative arrival times. The example also shows why a lensed image should not automatically be interpreted as a separate object.
What cluster collisions reveal about dark matter
In a 2015 NASA report, researchers examined 72 large cluster collisions using Hubble observations to map stars and dark matter through lensing and Chandra observations to detect X-ray-emitting colliding gas. The study reported that dark matter continued through the collisions without slowing down much, while the hot gas interacted and was affected by drag.

It does not identify a dark-matter particle or settle every possible interaction. The study’s lead author, David Harvey, put the remaining uncertainty plainly: “There are still several viable candidates for dark matter, so the game is not over. But we are getting nearer to an answer.”
Richard Massey, a member of the team, explained why a large sample matters: “Each collision takes hundreds of millions of years, so in a human lifetime we only get to see one freeze-frame from a single camera angle. Now that we have studied so many more collisions, we can start to piece together the full movie and better understand what is going on.”
How to interpret a lensing image without being misled
- Identify the foreground lens. The large, relatively nearby cluster is the lensing mass.
- Separate foreground galaxies from background features. Color, apparent size and distance measurements help distinguish cluster members from remote sources.
- Look for repeated structures. Similar colors, textures or shapes in different arcs can indicate multiple images of one galaxy.
- Do not treat an arc as material orbiting the cluster. It is an image of a background source whose light path has been distorted.
- Remember that the mass map is inferred. Lensing measures gravity’s effect; dark matter is mapped through that effect rather than seen directly.
- Allow for model dependence. The estimated mass distribution depends on the measured distortions, distance information and assumptions in the lens model.
What lensing can and cannot tell us
What it can do
- Reveal the distribution of total gravitating mass in and around a cluster.
- Expose dark-matter structure through its effect on background light.
- Magnify otherwise faint or distant galaxies for follow-up study.
- Provide multiple views and time delays that test models of the cluster’s mass.
- Show how mass, stars and hot gas are arranged differently during cluster collisions.
What it cannot do by itself
- Directly photograph dark matter or determine its particle identity.
- Guarantee that a lensed source is brighter in every observing setup.
- Prove that every apparent arc is a separate galaxy.
- Remove the need for distance measurements, image analysis and physical modeling.
Why galaxy-cluster lensing matters
Galaxy clusters are both laboratories and instruments. Their gravity supplies a natural magnifying effect that can bring extremely distant galaxies into view, while the same bending records how mass is distributed across the cluster. By combining strong arcs, weak shape distortions, multiple images, time delays, visible galaxies and X-ray gas, astronomers can test models of structure formation and dark-matter behavior.
The central idea is simple: mass curves spacetime, curved spacetime bends light, and the altered light carries information about the mass that caused the curvature. The spectacular arcs and rings are therefore more than visual effects. They are measurements encoded in the paths of photons from galaxies far behind the cluster.
