Fyreslayers are a close-range, objective-focused duardin army that wins by spending short, powerful timing windows at exactly the right moment. Their five UR-GOLD RUNE abilities can turn a charge, survive a counterattack, reach an objective or finish a target, while Magmadroth-mounted heroes add monster-scale movement and pressure. The army rewards planning more than automatic aggression: you have to decide which advantage matters now and which must wait.
The framework below applies to the current Scourge of Aqshy season where noted. Seasonal points, battle tactics and some warscroll rules can change, so use the latest official battlepack and faction downloads when you build a list or prepare for an event.

How do Fyreslayers play?
Fyreslayers usually operate at short range. Infantry and heroes want to contest the central objectives, absorb a hit, then answer with a concentrated charge or melee activation. They are not a conventional gunline, and their strongest turns are rarely about doing everything at once. Instead, the army layers ordinary movement and combat with a single high-impact rune, a carefully chosen charge and, in the current season, a Magmadroth’s fury-fuelled ability.
That plan creates three recurring decisions:
- When to spend a rune: each UR-GOLD RUNE effect is a once-per-battle resource, and only one can be used in a battle round.
- Where to commit your threat: a Magmadroth can force an opponent to respect a flank or a monster on an objective, but sending it too far ahead can leave your infantry unsupported.
- Which secondary objective to pursue: battle tactics score points in addition to the battleplan’s primary objectives, so a tactically modest turn can be correct if it produces reliable secondary points.
Fyreslayers therefore suit players who like making a plan at the start of a round and then adjusting it after seeing charges, priority and the opponent’s positioning. They can be direct and brutal, but they are not a faction that wants every unit to race forward independently.

Fyreslayer identity: lodges, ur-gold and Grimnir
A warrior-cult organised into lodges
Fyreslayers are a martial duardin society divided into lodges. A Runefather or Fyrequeen leads a lodge, while the Zharrgrim priesthood evaluates and smelts ur-gold, forges it into runes and conducts the rites surrounding death. This structure matters on the table because the army’s heroes are not just support pieces: they are the points around which a lodge’s assault, prayers and objective work are organised.
The faction’s religious purpose is the recovery of Grimnir’s legacy. Ur-gold is treated as a sacred material and is embedded into Fyreslayer flesh as runes. In the fiction, those runes channel divine power; in the rules, they become limited-use bursts that define the army’s rhythm.
Why the rune mechanic changes your decisions
A Fyreslayer unit can look merely adequate before its rune is spent and dramatically more dangerous or durable afterward. Because the advantage is temporary or single-use, using it on the wrong target is expensive. A rune used to win an unimportant combat may leave you without the defensive effect needed to hold the central objective in the following round.

The core faction trait presents five UR-GOLD RUNE abilities. Each is usable once per battle, and you can use only one UR-GOLD RUNE ability in a battle round. The official faction overview gives the battlefield purpose of each rune; consult the current faction pack for the exact wording, eligible units and timing sequence.

The table describes roles, not a substitute for the current rules text. Names, restrictions and timing details should be checked in the faction pack used for your event.
Practical rune sequencing
Plan rune use around the whole round rather than the first attractive target. If the opponent has a dangerous charge lined up, Rune of Fury may be worth more than an offensive effect even when you are the active player. If a unit needs to survive on an objective through both players’ activations, Fiery Determination can protect your scoring plan. Relentless Zeal is strongest when a few inches produce a legal charge or change objective control; moving merely to get closer is often a poor exchange for a once-per-battle resource.
Use Searing Heat when the improved damage has a defined result: removing a battleline unit that screens a hero, killing a monster before it scores, or clearing an objective in time to claim it. Farsight is most useful when thrown axes can accomplish something that a charge cannot, such as finishing a wounded target while keeping the Fyreslayer unit outside a dangerous counter-charge.

Are Magmadroths good in Age of Sigmar?
Magmadroths are both a lore symbol and a tactical tool. Fyreslayer lodges maintain hatcheries for these fire-breathing, armoured descendants of the Ur-Drake. They are proud, difficult to tame and large enough to make a flank or objective feel unsafe for the opponent.
On the table, a Magmadroth-mounted hero offers mobility, a monster threat and a way to project melee pressure beyond the infantry line. The mount can force an opponent to screen a side objective, reserve a unit for counter-charging or divert attacks away from your foot troops. That pressure is valuable even before the Magmadroth fights.
What a Magmadroth does well
- Reaches contested areas: its mobility lets a hero threaten objectives and targets that foot units may reach too late.
- Creates a high-priority target: a monster-scale model can draw attacks that would otherwise remove scoring infantry.
- Combines hero utility with combat: the mounted hero can perform command, prayer or objective duties while the mount supplies additional attacks.
- Punishes exposed screens: a failed screen or an isolated support hero can become a charge target from an unexpected angle.
What a Magmadroth does not solve
- It does not replace infantry needed to occupy several objectives at once.
- A single mounted hero can be isolated if it advances beyond the range of the rest of the lodge.
- Monster pressure is less useful when the battleplan rewards wide, distributed control rather than one decisive fight.
- Its points and warscroll rules are season-sensitive, so a list built around an older profile can become illegal or inefficient after an update.
Choose a Magmadroth because your army needs mobility and a monster threat, not because every Fyreslayer force is required to be a mounted list. A foot-heavy army can use runes and formations to win the centre while reserving points for more bodies and objective coverage.
How does Seeing Red work in Scourge of Aqshy?
The current Scourge of Aqshy rules add a seasonal decision to the Auric Runeson on Magmadroth. The Warhammer Community article introducing the rules was published on 30 June 2026. Seeing Red is not a permanent replacement for the faction’s core rune rules; it is part of the season’s interaction between fury levels and rage dice.

If the opponent’s fury level is lower, that level increases by one, up to seven. You then choose one of three benefits for the unit:
- More companion attacks: add one attack to the unit’s Companion melee weapons for the rest of that turn.
- Recover wounds: roll a number of dice equal to the player’s fury level and heal one wound for each roll of 4 or more.
- Temporary protection: give the unit a 5+ ward for the rest of the turn.
Choosing the Seeing Red benefit
The extra Companion attack is the damage option. Use it when the Magmadroth is already in a combat where one additional attack can remove a model, swing an objective or finish a key monster. Healing is strongest after the Runeson has taken meaningful damage but is expected to survive the combat; rolling more dice as the fury level rises can make a later activation more valuable. The 5+ ward is the stabilising choice when the opponent’s next attacks are more dangerous than your own opportunity to deal damage.
Because the ability can be used in any combat phase and once per turn, you should consider both players’ activations. Spending it in your own phase for extra attacks may leave the unit exposed in the opponent’s phase, while using the ward in the opponent’s phase can preserve the model for a later objective contest. Track the fury level and rage dice separately from your core runes so a seasonal resource is not mistaken for a faction resource.

Other Scourge of Aqshy additions
The seasonal rules also provide Fyreslayers with Marks of Vulcatrix enhancements and a new Vulkyn Gifts prayer lore. These additions interact with the season’s fury and rage-dice framework. Treat them as seasonal content: they may be unavailable, renamed or changed in a later battlepack.
Which battle formation fits a Fyreslayer army?
Battle formations reward different jobs, so select one after deciding how your list intends to score. The Warrior Kinband formation rewards infantry that charged in the current turn with +1 to wound rolls. That is a damage plan: move infantry into a charge, spend the appropriate resource if needed, and make the resulting combat count.
Other formations described in the faction material support tougher Magmadroths, improve hero objective control or create defensive barriers in friendly territory. Their value depends on what your army actually contains and on the battleplan’s geography.

Do not call one formation universally best. A Warrior Kinband bonus is wasted if your infantry cannot charge reliably, while a defensive formation may be excellent on a battleplan that makes your home objectives important and less useful on a plan that immediately rewards a central assault.
How do battle tactics score points?
Battle tactics are secondary objectives chosen during the battle. They add points to the battleplan’s primary objective scoring and should be considered during list construction, not only after deployment.
An official 2024–25 explainer described the process as choosing a tactic at the start of a turn and scoring four victory points for completing it. It also explained a cost for winning priority and choosing a second consecutive turn: the player taking that extra turn could not pick a battle tactic in that turn. Those details are tied to that battlepack and should not be assumed to be unchanged in the 2026 Scourge of Aqshy season.
A reliable tactic-planning method
- Read the current battlepack first. Confirm which tactics exist, when they are selected, their victory-point value and any restrictions on consecutive turns.
- Map tactics to your roster. Mark which objectives require a charge, a surviving hero, a monster, a unit in a particular territory or a specific combat result.
- Reserve a realistic option. At the start of each turn, choose a tactic your units can complete without abandoning the primary objective.
- Check rune timing. If a tactic depends on reaching an objective or winning a combat, decide whether Relentless Zeal, Searing Heat or another rune is part of the plan before you commit.
- Score first, then expose models. A tactic that can be completed from a safe position is usually preferable to one that demands an unnecessary charge into a losing combat.
Do not assume a double turn is automatically a scoring windfall. Under the 2024–25 explanation, the extra consecutive turn traded away the battle-tactic selection. The current season may use a different rule, so verify it before designing a priority strategy.

How to build a Fyreslayer plan step by step
1. Choose the army’s primary job
Decide whether the list is primarily infantry control, Magmadroth pressure, hero-led objective play or a balanced mix. This choice determines whether a formation bonus, a mounted hero and your first rune are helping the same plan or competing for attention.
2. Buy enough board presence
Include enough units to contest more than one objective. A list with a powerful Magmadroth but too few bodies can win a combat and still lose the battle because the opponent controls the rest of the table.

3. Add mobility deliberately
If your infantry cannot reach the scoring areas on the battleplan’s timetable, consider a Magmadroth-mounted hero or a formation that improves movement and objective control. Mobility should solve a measured problem, not simply make the list look faster.
4. Assign each rune a job before deployment
Write a provisional order for the five runes: defensive response, movement turn, decisive combat, ranged pressure and charge punishment. You will change the order in play, but the exercise prevents spending the first effect that appears useful.
5. Prepare a battle-tactic route
Identify at least one achievable secondary objective for the opening, middle and closing stages of the game. Leave room to adapt if the opponent denies a charge lane or wins priority.
6. Recheck the current points and downloads
Use the latest official profiles and battlepack before submitting a list. The seasonal article states that points have changed, and the historical profile values below are not a current 2026 army-building reference.

The 2026 seasonal material says points changed but does not provide a current Fyreslayer points table in the material used for this guide. Check the latest official download for your region and event pack rather than copying these September 2025 numbers into a new roster.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Spending a rune because a target is available
Symptom: an offensive rune wins a minor combat, then the opponent charges an unprotected objective. Fix: ask what the rune changes about scoring, survival or target removal before activating it.
Launching the Magmadroth alone
Symptom: the mounted hero reaches the enemy but cannot be supported and is surrounded next turn. Fix: measure follow-up charges, objective control and retreat lanes before committing. The monster should create pressure for the lodge, not become a separate army.

Symptom: a list is over the limit or a planned tactic is not legal in the current event. Fix: verify the date and battlepack for every points value, formation rule and tactic.
Confusing fury and rage resources
Symptom: a player spends a core rune while tracking Seeing Red, or assumes a seasonal fury level is permanent across games. Fix: keep separate counters for UR-GOLD RUNE uses, rage dice and the current fury level, and reset them according to the season’s rules.
Ignoring the primary objective
Symptom: the army completes a battle tactic but loses the battleplan’s scoring zone. Fix: select a tactic that follows your primary-objective plan; secondary points should reinforce board control rather than replace it.
Putting it all together on the table
A strong Fyreslayer round usually has a visible purpose. You identify the objective or enemy unit that matters, decide whether the lodge must endure or attack, and spend one resource to make that plan reliable. In one game, that may mean Fiery Determination on a unit holding the centre while a Magmadroth threatens a flank. In another, Relentless Zeal creates the charge that activates Warrior Kinband, followed by Searing Heat to make the combat decisive. If the mounted hero is already engaged in the current season, Seeing Red lets you choose between damage, healing and a 5+ ward based on which combat phase is more dangerous.
The army’s strength is not a single automatic combo. It is the ability to convert a well-timed, limited advantage into control of an objective, survival through a counterattack or removal of a priority target. Build around that timing discipline, keep seasonal rules separate from permanent faction rules, and Fyreslayers become a purposeful close-range force rather than a collection of slow melee models.
